Hawthorne, Robert “Earl”

HAWTHORNE, EARL WApril 18, 1929 – February 14, 2016
at the age of 86 years

A celebration of Earl’s life will be held at Fischer’s Funeral Services in Salmon Arm on Saturday, March 5th at 1:00pm. A light lunch will follow.

Robert “Earl” Hawthorne, 86, peacefully passed away Sunday February 14th, 2016 at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. He is survived by his wife Minnie, sister Beatrice, grandson Brian and son in law Eric.  He was predeceased by his son Robert, and his daughter Sandra and his siblings Ruth, Orlow, Dave and Hazen.

Earl was born in McAdam, NB on April 18, 1929. His father David and Martha had six children, Ruth, Orlow, Dave, Earl, Beatrice and Hazen. Earl met the love of his life, Minnie, at the Admiral Factory in Port Credit, Ontario in 1953 and they were married on December 21, 1954. They had 2 children together, Sandra and Robert. They moved to Delta, BC in 1966. They lost their son Robert in 1974. Sandra had their grandson Brian in 1985 and he is the joy of their life. Tragically, they lost Sandra to cancer in 1990. Over the years Minnie and Earl gained many, many friends by their loving and generous spirits. In time they commonly became Grandma and Grandpa to many and they’ve continued to be surrounded by friends who are like family.

Earl worked at the sawmill and then got a job at North Delta Secondary School. For over 20 years he thoroughly enjoyed working as a janitor, playing jokes on his co-workers and helping many kids. Shortly after retiring, Earl and Minnie moved to Salmon Arm where they’ve lived a happy and quiet life next to the Salmon River surrounded by loving neighbors.

Anyone who knew Earl, knew he loved to keep busy with his many projects, listening to his old time music, telling entertaining stories of his life and with jokes he played on us all.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Earl’s name to the Arthritis Society.

  2. Auntie Minnie, I want to express my sincere heartfelt sympathy and condolences on the los of your beloved husband Earl. This came as such a shock. I will never forget the kindness both of you showed Faye and me at your home in Delta. I will never forget, in fact just recently I was thinking of the good times we had by the river and campfire at the weiner roast in Manitoba, on the farm by the river. Such a pleasant & unforgetful memory to have with such true deep meanings is one I will cherish forever. Earl is now free of pain and suffering and has answered the call for another Special Angel in the heavens.
