Steele, John Humphries

February 27, 1920 – February 22, 2012
at the age of 91 years

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Father and Grandfather, John Humphries Steele.  John passed away peacefully as Shuswap Lake General Hospital of Feb. 22, 2012 with his daughter Caroll and son in-law Brian at his side.  He was 91 years of age.

Born on February 27, 1920, John was the eldest of seven children born to David and Hazel Steele, homesteaders in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan.  He was pre-deceased by his loving wife, Dorothy in 1972, his parents, his sister Elva, brother Joe, brother Elvin, sister Hazel and his second wife Kay in 2011.

John is survived by his son Scott Steele (Louise), daughter Caroll Cassidy (Brian), his brother Ken Steele, sister Iona Francis, grandchildren Aryn Steele (Chris), Lauren Steele (Tony), Caleigh Cassidy (James), Ian Cassidy, Riley Cassidy and many nieces and nephews.  Sharing in our grief are Kay’s children who he loved as his own, Jean O’Brien (Bert), Rob Thiessen (Louise), LaVaune Ellis, Kay’s brother Jim, many grandchildren and many, many dear friends.

John was extremely well-read with a great passion for history and the arts.  His memory was incredible with a mind we jokingly referred to as a “Steele” trap.  An accepting, humble, good humoured soul, John made friends easily and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

John served in the Canadian Army from 1939 to 1946 during World War 2 in Italy and northwest Europe. Battle’s o’er, dear Daddy.  Rest in peace.

The family wishes to thank the staff and residents of Piccadilly Terrace—most especially, Darla Girard, the staff at Shuswap Lake General Hospital and Dr. Weicker for the compassionate care and help in giving John a peaceful end to a long, well lived life.

A celebration of life service was held a Five Corner’s Pentecostal Church on Monday, February 27, 2012 followed by a second family service at a later date in Shaunavon, SK where he will be placed to rest beside his beloved Dorothy.

Memorial donations in John’s name can be made to the Salvation Army.
