Houghton, Jean Marguerite

August 28, 1935 – November 30, 2025
at the age of 90 years:

A celebration of Jean’s life will be held Saturday, December 13, 2025, 1pm, at Fischer’s Funeral Services, 4060 1 Avenue SW, Salmon Arm, BC.

Jean Marguerite Houghton passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on November 30, 2025, at the age of 90. Born in the hamlet of Edgerton, Alberta, Jean lived a life marked by compassion, faith, and deep devotion to her family and to the Lord.

Jean graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Misericordia School of Nursing in Edmonton in 1958 and went on to serve faithfully in her profession for more than 40 years. Her gentle spirit, skilled hands, and heart for helping others touched countless lives throughout her career.

On May 9, 1959, Jean married her best friend and the love of her life, Jesse L. Houghton. Together, they were blessed with four wonderful children and shared more than four decades of faithful Christian ministry. Their partnership—rooted in love, service, and steadfast commitment to God—remained a shining example to all who knew them.

Jean was predeceased by her parents, Reg and Norma Smith, and by her sister, Phyllis. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Jesse; their four children, Brent (Charmaine), Brian (Tammy), Sherri (Will), and Brad (Vicki); 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her brother, Gordon; her sister, Flo; many nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Mom found joy in praying for others, reading, playing piano, cooking and baking, tending her garden, and sharing laughter during game nights with friends. Above all, she delighted in serving God and others. She had a special gift for creating meaningful experiences—whether planning fun activities or organizing women’s retreats—always seeking to bless those around her.

Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the doctors, nurses, and home-care team who provided such loving care during her final days.

Jean’s life was a beautiful reflection of her faith, kindness, and unwavering love. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

A celebration of Jean’s life will be held Saturday, December 13, 2025, 1pm, at Fischer’s Funeral Services, 4060 1 Avenue SW, Salmon Arm, BC.

  1. I was heart sad to receive the news that Mrs. Houghton had passed away. I attended the church in Clyde, that her husband was a pastor of. Mrs. H was always, kind, considerate and loved the Lord as well as her husband so very much. She was a dedicated wife, mother and friend. There house was always filled with people, family, missionary visitors and more. Mrs. H held many special events at their place and even cooked a full Chinese food meal for us. She played the piano beautifully and sang as well. She never lost her patience when it came time for all of us to participate in the Christmas concert when we did not know our lines or that we may have forgot them. The 4 children were quite young when they left the Clyde church but I do recall how much Brian, Brent, Sherry and baby Brad were deeply loved and cherished. My heart goes out to each one of you and your families.
Pastor Houghton, may your faith continue to sustain you and also knowing that you will meet again one day. What a lovely couple.
Mr. Houghton thank you for being my Pastor, my bus driver, helping out wherever you could and for all the driving you did to ensure we were able to attend Church and all the activities and events around it. Thank you both for bringing me closer to the Lord…. I shall always remember the kindness and love you both showed me. Thank you.
Pastor, I am hoping that you are surrounded by your beloved family and friends and that God continues to bless your life and may you always feel Gods presence during the days of transition. Blessings and Love Always

  2. Dear Jesse and family, We are saddened to hear of Jean’s passing. We enjoyed so many visits during your time pastoring the Shuswap Alliance Church, and Jean was such a faithful and gifted pianist during our services.

I always chuckled when, as worship leader I would chose a song played in a minor key, which she found more difficult (like “O Come Emmanuel). She would always protest, but played it well anyway.

Jean was a lovely and loving woman of God who always made everyone around her feel valued. We hope you find comfort knowing that Jean is in the Presence of God the Father, singing with all the saints (in a Major Key, of course).

Sorry to hear of your wife and mother passing. She will be missed by you all. Pray that God will give you peace at this time and joy in the future. In time God heals our hurts and we begin to adjust to our new life. Enjoyed our visits at the camp grounds when we camped at Sicamous Sands Resort. We will meet in heaven one day.
