at the age of 82 years:
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Roy McDonald on Dec 6, 2025 at Shuswap Lake General Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Predeceased by Foster parents William and Frances Evans, Roy leaves behind his loving wife and partner of 61 years, Linda McDonald, 3 Children – son Randy (Cynthia), son Brad, daughter Kelly (Joe), granddaughter Brandi (Josh) Rolin, great grandson Elliott August Rolin, great grand-daughter Charlotte Anna Rolin and special pet Bella.
Roy was born in Prince Rupert, BC and spent his youth growing up in Surrey, BC. He had a long and varied career, starting out by farming at a very young age in Saskatchewan. Roy worked as a longshoreman in New Westminster for a number of years, then operated a tow truck on the Port Mann and Pattullo bridges in Surrey. Roy and his family moved to Nanaimo where he worked as a loader operator on the crusher crew, with the BC Dept of Highways for 12 years. Roy then took an opportunity in Salmon Arm and worked with the Dept of Highways Bridge Maintenance crew for several years.
Roy was known for his calm, cool demeanour and his excellent sense of humour. Some of Roy’s hobbies and interests included being a dedicated Hockey Dad, a driver instructor for his kids and granddaughter, a volunteer firefighter, a senior advisor on operating machinery, a 30-year member of the Salmon Arm Vintage Car Club, and volunteering at the Senior’s Centre. Roy was an avid scratch ticket player and took great pride in giving his interesting Christmas stocking presents to the delight of everyone who received them.
Thank you to the Palliative care team that helped to care for Roy when he was so ill with Pulmonary Fibrosis. The family would also like to thank Dr. Kevin Goldberg and the nurses and doctors at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital who took good care of Roy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. By Roy’s request there will be no formal service
My heartfelt condolences to Linda and family. It was always a pleasure to talk and visit with Roy whenever we got together for family gatherings or highway events.
May he rest in peace.
To Linda and family. Our sympathy and thoughts are with you at this sad time. It was a joy and a privilege to get to know Roy over the years. We will remember him for his kind spirit , his gentle , dry humour and his love of family.
