With great sadness, we announce the passing of John who died peacefully at the Shuswap Lake Hospital on April 4, 2018.
He is survived by his three loving children, daughters Veronica (Johnson), Mimi (Barbour) and his son Dan. He was blessed with five grandchildren who will miss him terribly and five wonderful great-grandchildren who made him very proud.
Born in Elfros, Saskatchewan – December 1, 1924 – John met his devoted wife, Evelyn, at the tender age of twenty, married her, and after 18 years, they moved to British Columbia. Living in Vancouver, a short time on Vancouver Island and a stint in the Yukon, John and his wife finally settled in the Shuswap area.
John was a great friend to many and all who knew him, benefited from his kindness, his wonderful gentleness and easy laughter. He had a smile that lit every room he entered. In his later years, though handicapped with blindness, he never gave up and led a full life until failing health made that impossible.
He became involved in the community and was a long-time member and president of the Salmon Arm Lions Club. He was also involved with the Seniors Clubs and various groups in Canoe and in Salmon Arm.
John was a beautiful soul who will be loved and forever remembered by his family and friends. He welcomed many into his heart and treated them like were his own. His giving heart and kind wisdom will be sadly missed. There was never a man more loved. There’s no doubt, God will be waiting to welcome him with open arms.

It is with great sadness that the family of Garry David Melvin Casselman announce his passing after a brief battle with cancer on March 11, 2018, in Salmon Arm, BC at the age of 70 years.
Garry was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta to Ernest Casselman and Viola (Sturm) on June 10, 1947. It is where he met Janice (Mathieson) and they married in 1965 after a whirlwind courtship. He and Janice ran their own hair salon for many years in Medicine Hat. Garry was a free spirit and once their 2 children were raised, he and Janice settled and built a cabin on their land in the remote community of Seymour Arm on the Shuswap, a place that was dear to his heart. They resided there for 23 years moving closer to Salmon Arm in his final months. Those who knew him realized his great love of family history, of books and of written word. He had a passion for Karate and in the 1980’s won an award for a poem he wrote called The Karate Teacher. In the way he lived, he instilled in his children love for animals, nature and the value of taking risks.
Garry leaves behind his devoted wife of 53 years, Janice (Mathieson); his son Ernest (Pauline) of Dawson Creek, BC; daughter Selena (Trent) of Nelson, BC; and grandsons Gordon, Kalen and Skye. He also leaves behind his sisters Shirley (Al) Cowling of Medicine Hat, Alberta and Rose Lessard of Kelowna, B.C. as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Viola.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. McKee, Dr. Main and Dr. Keith Hepburn and gratitude to Diane Barr and the palliative care team in Salmon Arm for helping Garry to remain at home in his final days.
As he wished there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place and plans will be made for a celebration of life in Medicine Hat, Alberta to be held in the summer.

Born in Paynton, Saskatchewan
Shirley was predeceased on March 12th, 2013 by her loving husband of 62 years, Bill. Brothers Geordie and Glenn Taylor, and son-in-law, Don Bergren, in 1996.
She was a wonderful mother to Susan (Terry), Bob (Deb), and Brian (Deb). She also had a very special place in her heart for family friend, Marcia Stacy and her niece, Angela Taylor.
Loving Grandmother to Jamie, Shawna (Dan), Darryl, Shannon (Mike) and Jennika. Great Grandmother to Ryland, Kelan, Jacob and Cole.
Shirley grew up on the farm in Paynton, Saskatchewan. She said it was lots of work making pies and bread from morning until night for the farmhands. When she was 12 the family lost the farm during the depression. The family then took the train to Summerland, BC to start a new life. In Summerland, Grampa and Gramma owned a local restaurant where Mom also worked. It was on the streets of Summerland where Mom met a handsome young man named Bill who became her husband. He always said that he took her to a poker game on their first date and that she was his good luck charm.
Mom and Dad moved to Prince Rupert where they welcomed their first child, Susan. Bob was born in Vernon and Brian in Penticton where they settled to raise their kids. Mom spent a lot of time enjoying camping and fishing trips with the family. We were a very outdoorsy family. In 1989 they retired in Blind Bay to live on the shores of Shuswap Lake. When Mom and Dad were not travelling in their RV we had many family gatherings sitting on the deck enjoying the beautiful sunsets over Shuswap Lake.
Mom had a great sense of humour. She was fun loving but quiet and unassuming and she did so much for us.
We love you Mom. Thanks for being there. We will miss you.
Special thanks to Dr. Angela Plessis, Dr. Megyesi, and the Community Care Nurses and Care Aids.

Georgina Lazzarotto (nee Godwin) was born Aug 03, 1940, the last of three girls to George & Agatha Godwin of Rhydyfelin, Glamorgan, S. Wales UK
She left to be with the Lord on March 01,2018 after a short stay of 5 days in hospital at Salmon Arm, B.C.
Georgina came to Canada as a young nurse in 1964 along with 3 others to seek adventure after answering an ad for nurses in the Province of Saskatchewan.
She started her career in Paradise Hill a small town in NW Sask, She spent a short time in Calgary at the TB San. and in the early 1970’s started work with the Federal Department of Indian Affairs as it was called then. Her duties took her to remote First Nation villages in Northern, Sask, These included La Ronge, Stanley Mission, South End and Co-op Point. She developed a wonderful relationship with the Cree First Nation who honored her with Moose hide jacket. She worked with community elders who accompanied her to translate. Often her patients had to be flown to a large community centers for treatment. It was while flying around the North that she met Lorne who was also flying in the North with the RCMP. Lorne was transfered from La Ronge to Morse, Sask prior to their marriage in Saskatoon on Feb 03-1973. After the birth of their first son Ryan they moved to Regina where Lorne continued with the RCMP. During these years in Regina Georgina stayed at home to raise Ryan and their chosen son Christian. It was while in Regina she started to develop her love for music by taking on the request of the priest to direct the church choir. At one point Georgina was directing three choirs in that parish. Regular choir, children’s choir and a choir that sang at funerals. Together they moved to Williams Lake in 1986 after ten years in Regina. In Williams Lake she again took on the challenge of directing the church choir, working with 7 different priests over a period of 27 years. In addition to regular duties on Sundays she played at weddings, funerals and special occasions. The first special one involved fund raising for a brand new church organ. This was used the whole time and was played by several special pianists while she lived there.
In addition to church involvement Georgina volunteered on the children’s Festival Committee for many years and taught voice lessons to as many as 18 students on the go at one time. Her greatest individual musical achievement was to obtain her Licentiate in Voice with the highest mark in Western Canada from the Western Board of Music. In addition to all this she continued her nursing career at Cariboo Memorial Hospital, working in the operating room, day care and recovery. After being on call for many years and with age creeping up she retired from active nursing in 2002. She then took an instructor position with Thompson Rivers University in Williams Lake teaching several courses in the Home Support Resident Care Aid Program to finish off her nursing career. One class was specially designed for First Nation Women.
In order to be closer to family in Revelstoke the last move was made to Salmon Arm in 2013. While in Salmon Arm she again was involved with the church choir but in a lesser capacity as her directing arm was getting worn out after 37 plus years of standing out front of a choir. Georgina continued her association in volunteering with the local Music Festival. Other volunteer work involved visiting the sick in the hospital as an outreach with the Catholic Church.
Special thanks to Dr’s. Main & Wilson for their considerate care and excellent liaison with the family during Georgina’s latter days. Also, a loving hug to the nurses in ICU who guided her through
a rough time with all the medical attachments. Blessings to you all.
The Funeral Service for Georgina will be held on Monday March 12th @ 11 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salmon Arm. Reception to follow in Church Hall. Donations in Georgina’s name to “The BC Lung Association, PO Box 34009 Stn. D, Vancouver, B.C. would be welcome to further research Pulmonary Fibrosis.

In sadness, the family wishes to announce the passing of Ellen Turner on Monday, March 5, 2018 at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Salmon Arm, B.C. She passed away peacefully in her sleep with family at her side.
Ellen was born December 18, 1929 at Virden, Manitoba. She was raised on the family farm and lived there until she married the love of her life, G.W. Vernon Turner on January 5, 1948. They lived on the Turner family farm at Cromer, Manitoba and raised three boys. She worked hard both in and out of the home. She enjoyed farm life and was well known for her vegetable and flower gardens! During the winters, she enjoyed watching her husband curl, going to dances and knitting.
In 1965, they sold the farm and moved to Rivers Manitoba where they operated the McLeod’s store until it closed. She was employed at the hospital until they moved to British Columbia. In 1969, the family moved to Salmon Arm. She always yearned to live in the Shuswap and finally realized her dream! She loved to garden and particularly enjoyed all the fruit trees. Nothing ever went to waste! She worked at Marshall Wells before obtaining a position at the hospital and eventually became the assistant dietician. After leaving the hospital, she worked at a variety of jobs before starting her own business as a house and pet sitter. She enjoyed her clients, but especially liked their pets, from cats, dogs and ducks to horses!
She was a dedicated volunteer with the hospital auxiliary for 35 years. In addition, she was an active member of the Legion for over 40 years and enjoyed volunteering for the annual Poppy Campaign! She was a supporter of the First United Church, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Shuswap Hospital Foundation, and the Haney Village & Museum. In her spare time, she loved to dance and liked to help organize the Singles Club dances. She enjoyed cross country skiing and was an avid golfer! She enjoyed travelling, especially with Wells Gray Tours out of Kamloops and other trips to Hawaii and Mexico.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Vernon Turner in 1977; by her parents, Gordon, and Amelia; brothers: Edward and Melvin; parents in law, John (Iva) Turner, sister in law, Gwen Crook (nee: Turner) and husband Russ.
Left to mourn are her sons, Brian (Linda); Blaine (Lisa); Brent (Debbie) and their families consisting of six grand children and seven great grandchildren; brother, Ken (Jean) Wardle and sister, Joyce (Lloyd) Williamson and families along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Piccadilly Terrace for the friendship and compassion given to her. In addition, we extend our thanks to Dr. Bonthuys for his compassionate care of our mother and to the staff in emergency and the nurses staff on the second floor of the hospital.
A celebration of life will be held at Fischer’s Funeral Services in Salmon Arm at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 19, 2018 with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests you donate to the Shuswap Hospital Foundation or to a local charity of your choice.

Dad “Papa” was born the only child to Faye and George Carmer on March 21, 1929 in Spallumcheen, BC.
He passed away at the age of 88 on March 1st, 2018. Dad was predeceased by the love of his life Clara, and two children Vera and Chris.
Dad was raised in Tappen, BC and later moved to Birch Island, BC. He was a hard worker and was always part of the logging and lumber industry. He worked at the old Perry River Sawmill and then at Drew Sawmills, watching it change hands several times over the years. He piled lumber, operated the edger, he did many other positions and finally finishing his career in his 70’s as night watchman at the Malakwa mill.
Dad met Mom in Sicamous, BC and after a short courtship, they married on Dec 15, 1956 and settled in Malakwa to work and raise their family. Dad and Grandpa built the family log home on their property along the highway, and that’s where they resided until 2013, when they had to move to make room for the new four lane of highway # 1. Mom and Dad did lots of camping, socializing, gardening, and community work in between working hard at their jobs and raising 5 children plus looking after Dads Mom in the 80’s and 90’s.
Dad loved to have his fires in his fire pit at his new home on his youngest daughter’s property, burning out a few fire pits in the process! He was piling and splitting wood right up to the first snow fall of 2017. It was our favorite memory, Dad telling stories around the fire, about his past adventures and shenanigans he did as a child and teenager before he settled down with Mom.
He had a garden every year, and even canned his own produce. He had a sign on his garden “Grow Damn It Grow!” which we thought was very endearing and “Dad being Dad”. He loved to go fishing and go for drives up the mountain and at the last enjoyed his drives around Malakwa with the dogs on his lap. Not only was he an avid gardener, he was also known for his fun loving crib games, and he taught his homecare workers how to play crib, which we were very proud of him for his ability and patience to do so.
Dad passed away peacefully at home. He has requested cremation and no service, but we may have a fire and wiener roast in late spring in his honor.
Dad is survived by 4 daughters, Noreen (Brian), Dody, Val (Dan), Sally (Ted) and 7 grandchildren and his beloved pets Chumley aka: Hercules and Ginger.
Donations to the Salmon Arm Oncology Unit, BC Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Salmon Arm Branch of BCSPCA in Dads honor would be greatly appreciated.

November 8, 1938 – February 18, 2018
at the age of 79 years
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Carol Elizabeth Pringle on Sunday, February 18, 2018 in Salmon Arm, BC, at the age of 79 years.
Mom was born on November 8, 1938 to Roderic and Kathleen Jones. A lifelong resident of the Westwold Community, she spoke fondly of many childhood memories she shared with her siblings, cousins and friends, including her exceptional ice hockey and baseball skills, and spending endless summer days exploring the hills of Westwold. A highlight of her youth was the Kamloops High School Band trip to Europe in 1954.
As a farmer, Mom understood the definition of work, always without complaint. If it needed to be done, she did it – from milking the cows, raising poultry and pigs, birthing lambs, harvesting alfalfa and grain, tending two separate gardens, hauling household water, to sewing her children’s clothing. Her door was always open, the kettle was always ready to boil and there was an extra coffee cup and dinner plate in the cupboard for anyone who might be in need. When she welcomed you to the family dinner table, you would have enjoyed homemade bread, butter, jam, garden vegetables and produce, farm raised beef, poultry and pork, canned fruit, pickles, ice cream and doughnuts.
After many years of dedication to Pringle Creek Farm and her family, she treasured her retirement and Yuma winters. Her yearly goal was to escape to her Yuma family before the first snowfall and bask in the Arizona sun until the hummingbird feeders hung in her window in the Spring. Upon her return, stocked with Mexican vanilla, American cigarettes and the orange drink, Tampico, she would share tales of her quiet days and gambling adventures.
By far the most important thing to Mom was her family. She was proud of all her “kids” including her natural children, step-children, and those she took under her wing. She adored her grandchildren and would have been thrilled that her first great grandchild, Margaret Anne Pringle, arrived on February 20, 2018.
If you ever crossed her path, you would remember her piercing blue eyes, striking hair (blue-black in her youth and white later in life) and warm smile. When she struck up a conversation with you, you would see her optimistic outlook and her remarkable ability to listen empathetically and without judgment.
Mom, dementia may have taken your mind and cancer may have claimed your body, but your remarkable strength and true spirit will live on in those who were blessed to be loved by you.
At Mom’s request, there will be no service. In lieu, we ask that you remember her with an act of kindness, spend time with your family, play a game of cards, whistle while you work, complete that crossword puzzle and never, ever say no to dessert.

It is with deep, and heavy sadness that we announce the death of our father Garth Delbert Sparrow, who passed away on the morning of February 7 , 2018 at Park Place Piccadilly Care Home in Salmon Arm, BC. Garth was born May 21, 1924 in Abbotsford BC. He moved to New Westminster BC at a early age where he lived until he left home in his early 20s. In high school he was a champion at basket ball and prized himself on how he could pick up a basket ball with his fingers using only one hand and hold it that way… a trick we his children repeatedly tried to master to no avail and his hilarity. He also loved playing the piano and spent the majority of his spare time studying birds. With the help and mentoring of his neighbour and good friend, as well as Ornithologist, Mr Maguire, Dad also became an Ornithologist. He spent the majority of his spare time escaping into the wilderness to roam around the woods in hunt of a new species of bird which by the way, he and Mr Maguire accomplished. He kept active in his life and in his career he was an accomplished Purchasing Agent. He liked to go fishing which provided a venue and excuse to wander the aforementioned woods. He is survived by his daughter, Linda and her husband and family, daughter, Cathy and her husband and family, son, John and his wife and family, stepdaughter, Carole and husband and family, and stepson, Ryan and wife and family, and his cousins Eileen and Mark. Dad lived a quiet life ending his last years up in the Shuswap in Sorrento BC, a place he dearly loved. A service will not be held as there will be a private family gathering in the warmer climes when the ides of winter have blown through. The family asks that donations be made to your favourite charity. Our sincerest thanks to the amazing and caring staff that looked after Dad at Park Place Piccadilly Care Centre.

Elton (73) died peacefully with his wife by his side at S.L.G.H. after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by Clara, his loving wife of 50 years; daughters Melissa (Sean) Wood, and Jennifer (Chad) Wheeler; Grandsons Andrew, Zackary, Nathan, and James; sister Enid Bailey, and several nieces and nephews.
Elton was born in Kelvington Saskatchewan and moved to Salmon Arm when he was nine. He began his career as a cabinet-maker then later started his own business as a carpenter and building contractor. His specialty was renovations, but he also built several houses in Salmon Arm. The very first house he ever helped to build was his family home at 410 Foothill Road when he was a child; which still remains in the family with the 4th generation growing up there.
“Handy Andy” was a Jack-of-all-trades. He would often joke about turning his hat one way and becoming a plumber, or the other way and becoming an electrician, a mechanic, or an appliance repairman. He always loved the challenge of being able to fix things. After becoming disabled in a car accident that forced him to retire from his carpentry business in 1991, Elton learned to cook and loved to test his experiments out on his family and neighbours (for better or worse). He also became an avid gardener and garage sale aficionado. He would find treasures and broken doodads for a bargain to fix up and make new again. He had an inventive mind and enjoyed the thrill of fixing things that most other people would have just thrown away. His shop is still lined up with his unfinished winter projects.
Elton loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting, shooting trap, and camping. He was a dedicated member of the Salmon Arm Fish and Game Club for over 50 years and worked on many of their club projects throughout the years. After his car accident, he still enjoyed helping as much as he was able and became the cook for work parties at the range and helped with numerous fundraising projects.
The family would like to thank all of the health care professionals that took such good care of Elton, and his good friends from the Salmon Arm Fish and Game Club that have been so supportive.
A celebration of Elton’s life will be held on Saturday, January 20th at 11:00 AM, with a reception to follow at Fisher’s Funeral Home in Salmon Arm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shuswap Hospital Foundation, Box 265, Salmon Arm, BC, V1E 4N3, www.shuswaphospitalfoundation.org or the Salmon Arm Fish and Game Club, 3200 70 Street SE, Salmon Arm, BC, V1E 1X4.

Our mom might come back to slap the side of our heads for mentioning her first and not loved name! Maxi the taxi etc. We think it’s perfect, unique and lovely, just like our mom.
Ann was born on April 30, 1930 to Leslie Hinchsliff and Mae LaBorde in North Battleford Saskatchewan, and left us on November 26, 2017.
An only child, her close relations and immediate family meant everything to her. Her final words to us were clear, take care of your siblings, be loving and generous, you should not take for granted what you have! These last few years, Mom was constantly worried about us, or how she was becoming a pain to her family, which simply wasn’t the case. She always tried to lift her spirits when we were present and even on the darkest days, her wonderful smile shone on through.
In the early years, mom was in charge, and was our main support, since our dad worked 6 days a week. We are sure her strength came from the fact that not only was she an only child, but her father was gone from 1939 to 1946, and she had to support her mom, as well as be supported. Fortunately, her grandparents lived in North Battleford also, so that helped. She had many stories to tell about how she would try to sneak in or out of the house, or move an object around, when her grandfather who was blind was sitting in his chair! She said she never did succeed, and he would scold, “Annie, what do you think you are doing!”
After high school, Ann took training in psychiatric nursing and worked in North Battleford. Every time we drove near the Battle River, she would tell us how the staff and patients would wade in the water to try to catch sturgeon, which caused many a calamity! She married Bob Jaeger in 1951, and the family came shortly after, Rick in 52, Dean in 55, Jana in 57 (on Dean’s Birthday!) , (there was a story about castor oil and a cake hiding there!), and Gregg in 1965. Ann and Bob formed many lifelong friendships in North Battleford that stand the test of time, and remind us what is really important during our stay on this earth.
After North Battleford came stays in Calgary, North Delta, Victoria and finally, their favorite part of the world, the Shuswap, Blind Bay and Salmon Arm. Ann really enjoyed the “Red Hatters”, Bridge, Dragon boat rowing, and Grandmothers to Grandmothers. Mom loved boating and camping all over B.C., at the coast and interior; and travelling to various parts of Canada and the U.S. Some of the highlights in her travels was a trip to England and Ireland with Jana in 2010, Portugal with dad, and across Canada by train with Dodie.
We will miss her on the deck of the cabin in Scotch Creek. We will also miss her positive attitude, stories of old – our only connection to our past, beautiful smile, lemon tarts, flapper pie (the fight was on), generosity and loving support.
Ann is survived by her four children, Rick (Patty), Dean (Shelly-ann), Jana, Gregg (Christine), grandchildren- Jenni-lynn (Randy), Julie (Derek), Devon, Tamra (Brad), Tyrel (Saskia), Cody (Kayla), Brittany, Becky and Emily and great grandchildren Austin and Hayley.
Ann’s family would like to express our thanks to Dr. Heuniss, “Annie’s favorite”, and all of the staff at Shuswap Lodge, you know who you are! Ann was very happy and comfortable with you, and she definitely did not want to leave. Thankyou to Eve for your kindness and support, and finally, a big hug to Dodie Anderson from all of the Jaeger’s.
A private family service will be held in Scotch Creek in the spring, to fulfill Ann’s final wishes. Please consider donations to women’s shelters, or the Alzheimer and Parkinson Societies.

Randy passed away peacefully at his home in Kelowna on the morning of November 25th 2017, 3 weeks shy of his 86th birthday. He leaves behind a legacy of honesty and kindness, a razor-sharp memory for the dates to a thousand stories and a pool table skill that was truly unexplainable. Randy is predeceased by his wife Barbara and his sister Anne, he is survived by his 3 sons; Doug, Dale and Patrick (White) his daughter Laurie (DeKleine) as well as 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Randy was born in Edmonton, AB on December 17th 1931 to Elwood and Mary White of Provost AB where he grew up. He married Barbara Ruth Swan of Cardsten, AB on April 19th 1956 and shortly thereafter moved to BC where they lived in numerous places before eventually settling in Sicamous where they were residents for 16 years. Julie grew up in Golden BC and worked at several jobs including many years for Evans Forest Products in the Plywood Plant before moving to Salmon Arm. She was injured in a car accident which pretty well ended her physical working abilities.
Julie loved to do crafts and was exceptional at anything she created as she had a rare insight and creative imagination. Julie loved to give to others and had an eye for a bargain. She regarded an item for it’s usefulness rather than it’s monetary value and found many good items at garage sales, and even though she didn’t have much money, she would buy it not only for herself but with others in mind.
In her younger days, Julie was competitive in sports and games. She was a very good bowler and could throw a baseball further than a lot of men. She was a whiz at card and board games and was exceptional with numbers.
Julie was very sensitive about other people’s feelings and although she had many personal hurts, she always found a way to forgive.
Julie’s family would like to thank Dr. Bratty, Home Care Services and all the staff at Bastion Place for the care that they extended to her.
