Tarlier, Amelia “Min”

January 15, 1930 – October 14, 2017
at the age of 87 years

Cherished wife of Ron, beloved mother of Denise, Michelle, and Paul, and adored grandmother of Alicia, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2017, in Salmon Arm, BC. She lived a long life, filled with love of family and many lifelong close friends, and many adventures and fun times: Skiing on the North Shore mountains, fishing trips into remote corners of BC, water skiing and boating on Shuswap Lake, fall camping trips with Ron, often to the farm in Alberta, and countless grand parties and good laughs with “the gang” – mom always remembered and was grateful for all the good times and good friends in her life. She was warm, gentle, compassionate, and laughed easily. We delighted in making mom laugh til she cried, which was not difficult.
Mom was born Milcia Yasenchuk, in Smoky Lake, AB, the youngest of Joseph and Sophie Yasenchuk’s four children. She spent her early childhood in nearby Bellis, before her father moved the family to Vancouver in 1937. Mom was living on Capitol Hill in Burnaby and just starting school when she first met Allie, her lifelong and closest friend.
The girls were still in high school when they embarked on the grand adventure of making their way across Burrard Inlet (sometimes by ferry) and up into the North Shore mountains (by trolly car or bus, followed by a long hike) to learn to ski. It was on a trip up Mt. Seymour that Min first met Ron. He was building a cabin with a group of the guys. The guys had a “no girls” pact, to avoid distractions from the serious work of cabin building, but Mom volunteered to chink log walls for Ron, and the rest is history… they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this past September 16th. They went on to build another two houses together, first in Lynn Valley, where they lived for almost 40 years and raised their family. Later, they built their retirement dream home at Blind Bay, where they have lived since 1991.
Mom is forever remembered by husband Ron and her three children, Denise, Michelle (Rob) Allan, and Paul (Suzanne); granddaughter Alicia Norman; and dear friends Allie Johnstone, Harold Enqvist, and Jill Guerin. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her parents, sister Alice (Clark), brothers Walter and Merle, and many, if not most, of her long time friends.
No service, but family and friends will be advised of plans for a small celebration of life in the spring. The family gratefully declines flowers; for anyone so inclined, we suggest donations to the Alzheimer’s Society, Shuswap Lake Hospital Foundation, or the animal welfare charity of your choice.

 Success
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

Sadesky, Alexander

June 17, 1933 – August 26, 2017
at the age of 84 years

A memorial service will be held at Deo Lutheran Church (1801 30 St NE, Salmon Arm) on September 23rd, 2017 at 1:30 pm. All are welcome.

On August 26th, Alexander Sadesky passed away peacefully at age 84 after a remarkable life.
Born in the Ukraine on June 17, 1933 to Anna and Stefan Sadecki, Alex excelled in school, sports, and all things mechanical until the uncertainty of war forced them along with his sister Ludmila, on a harrowing journey westward through Poland, to end up in Germany at the end of WWII. There, he frst met Natalie Baun, who years later and a world away, would become his wife. In 1948, the Sadeckis immigrated to Edmonton, Canada where Alex eventually became an engineer (U of A, class of 1958) and later a manager of engineering for Edmonton Power. As fate would have it, the Sadeckis sponsored the Baun family to come to Canada and Edmonton in 1954 and eight years later, Alex and Natalie were married.
Alex is survived by Natalie, their 3 children: Teresa (Mark), Ron (Pam), and Greg (Susan), 4 grandchildren: Logan, Anna, Lucas, and Evan.  Alex will be remembered for his generosity, devotion to family, and his extraordinary mechanical ability. It seemed there was nothing he could not fix or build. He was a gentle and fair man, with just a bit of mischief. He will be dearly missed.
The family requests that donations to either the Alzheimer or Cancer Societies of Canada be considered in lieu of flowers.

He will be sadly missed by his sons, Donald (Denise), Richard (Ivy) and Cam (Marisa), his close and dear friend Marion, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Over his years, Sid wore many hats:  he was an able seaman in the Royal Canadian Navy, a policeman, a rope maker and gas and pipe fitter to name a few but he was best known as “Sid the Barber”.  He was served with the French National Order of the Legion of Honour award for his contribution and dedication on the beaches of Normandy.  Sid made such an impact on the lives of others, he was a caring man, and always there in time of need to help someone out.  He had a great sense of humour and loved to lift others up with his jokes.

With profound sadness, the family of Martha “Hazel” Wilson announces her passing from this world into the arms of her Saviour on June 15, 2017 with her family by her side.  She was 93.  Hazel was born on February 17, 1924 in Michichi, Alberta.  She was the fourth of 5 children born to Ruby and Seth Lawrence.  She is survived by two of her siblings, sisters Inez Hartwick of Calgary and Helen Bullock of Creston.  At the young age of 18 Hazel married Svend Nels Peter Wilson and together they raised a family of four.  Gary (Heather) Wilson, Roger (Brenda) Wilson, Sandra (Courie) Unger and Marla (Harold) Walker.  She was the proud Grandmother of 12 grandchildren, (?) great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  Hazel was known for her wonderful cooking and baking, especially what her family lovingly referred to as her “grandma buns.”  She made the best buns in the country and we all just loved them.  She was a dedicated mom and a faithful wife to Svend.  On August 2nd they would have been married for 75 years.  Hazel enjoyed Church, Bible studies, word games (she was very competitive), reading, gardening, desserts and watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy on TV.  A number of years ago she suffered a stroke that left her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life but she faced life as it came and never complained. She carried on with determination, resolve, a sense of humour and a joyful spirit and she never had a harsh word for anyone.  What a role model she was for her family.  Hazel was pre-deceased by her parents, Ruby and Seth Lawrence, sister, Marjorie Lawrence, brother Roy and wife Gwen Lawrence, brother and sister-in-laws, Ingvard and Stella Wilson (Bedry), Jens and Laura Wilson, Ove Wilson (Della), Johnny Bullock (Helen), Ralph Hartwick (Inez), her son-in-law, Courie Unger and her mother and father-in-law, Nels and Ingaborg Wilson.  A celebration of life will be held on August 5th at 2:00 p.m. at Fisher’s Funeral Home, 4060 1st Avenue S.W, Salmon Arm, BC.  Flowers gratefully declined.  Mom, we love and miss you.  We are all looking to that day when we will join you in Heaven and will never have to say good-bye again.  Until then enjoy your rest and joyful peace Mom.

With heavy hearts, fond memories and love, we annouce that Val went from the arms of her devoted husband, Larry, to the arms of the Angels on the afternoon of July 14th, 2017, in Salmon Arm, British Columbia.
She was predeceased by her father, John Dakus, brothers Frank andLorne, nephew, Troy and her beloved cat “Patches”.Val will be greatly missed by her best friend and husband, Larry, who

Val had a career in Hairdressing and I think I can honestly, say that after they were married on March 25th,1978, Larry never had another haircut by anyone else other than Val, so I’m assuming he had to be “some kind of wonderful” to her! Val cut and curled her own hair, much
to everyone’s amazement! Val’s artistic abilities were her gift of strength and were so evident in all that she did, whether it was gardening, cross stitching, painting, sewing, knitting, crocheting or making crafts.  She also had a love for baking, country music, line dancing, being with their friends, where laughter and camaraderie would abound, but most of all, Val loved a good bargain!  Val was envied for her energy, determination, generosity and her power to touch hearts and minds with her personality.
The Family would like to thank the staff of the Kelowna General Hospital, Salmon Arm Hospital, the Home Care Staff and Bastion Place for their ongoing support.. Carr, Elsie

March 15, 1921 – July 8, 2017
at the age of 96 years

Elsie passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side. Born in Croydon, England weighing only 2lb 4oz, she was the lone survivor of triplets. She came into the world with a determination and tenacity that lasted her lifetime. Moving to Canada in 1973 she settled in Calgary before coming to Salmon Arm in 2010 to live with her daughter. Pre deceased by husband Len in 2011, she was married 73 years. Elsie was a keen gardener, singer, painter, knitter, seamstress and crafter. She was the heart of the home and even though she loved many pursuits, none compared to being a wife and mother.  Her laughter was infectious, her capacity for drinking tea enormous. Multitasking came naturally; she could read a ‘who dunnit’ whilst knitting, eating an apple and drinking a cuppa~ she called that relaxing.
Elsie leaves her three children Jean (Allan) Andrews, Vic (Glenda) Carr, Christine (Brad) Armstrong; eight Grandchildren, eight Great- Grandchildren and three Great Great Grandchildren. Elsie will rest along side Len at Mount Ida. Thank you to all the Community Care staff who helped us to keep her at home, we couldn’t have done it without you.  If you want to remember Elsie, drop some coins into the Salvation Army kettle – she loved the way they sung.

at the age of 76 years

Funeral Mass is July 15th, 10:00 am at the Catholic Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 1185 Shuswap, Chase, BC,

GARAGAN NEE CAMERON, Patricia “Pray, hope, and don’t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.” St. Padre Pio It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, Patricia. She spent her life selflessly giving her time and love to all those who knew her. For many years, she was a spunky secretary at St. Patrick’s and St. Angela’s schools in Calgary, AB. During the summers, she surrounded herself at the Shuswap with her children and grandchildren. She fought a private, very courageous battle against pancreatic cancer with all the dignity and strength of a champion. Her greatest love, Eddie Garagan, stood gallantly by her side, holding her up when she was weak and showering her with his undying love. Their marriage took on a new purpose during the battle, and only a covenant sealed by God could produce such fervour, patience, and endurance. Her children were blessed to be by her side, watching, holding, and learning through her final year. She took her last breath with the highest dignity in her own home at the Shuswap where love encompassed her. God greatly blessed her with a loyal husband of nearly fifty-five amazing years. Their faith and love brought forth six children who honoured and loved her. Her children all went on to follow in their parents’ footsteps and are blessed in marriages of their own: Shannon and Victor Santos, Stephen and Genelle Garagan, Bryan and Shauna Garagan, Kerry-Anne and Wes Walz, Allene and Dave vanOirschot, and Robert and Shawna Garagan. Our Glorious Father bestowed a field of flowers for Pat to water with her love and kindness with twenty-one grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Brandon (and his wife Brittany), Kaelene, Kelvin, Braydon, Jaedyn, Broedy, Brehna, Aymon, Aislynne, Kyleigh, Makenna, Gennae, Kaeven, Siobhan, Seamus, Payton, Cheyne, Claira, Wrexyn, Brielle, Quinn, Finnegan, Iona, and baby S. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will forever hold their countless, loving memories of her in their hearts forever. We give thanks to our Heavenly Father for seventy-six years of an amazing saint walking amongst us, showing the way to You and leaving a legacy of faith, hope, and prayer. Her fight is over; she has won! “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

As a teenager he worked on the road crews that built many of the first roads in the area.  Larry then went on to work at the local sawmill, Lakeside Timber, for a few years before starting his Lumber and Trucking business, which he successfully ran for over 50 years. He was happiest behind the wheel of one of his trucks delivering or picking up lumber as well as stories and memories that he continued to share with everyone. You cannot drive far without passing a home built with his lumber and you could think of him whenever you walked on the old wharf because he supplied the lumber for it.
He led a truly amazing life and survived many challenges, from a tractor rolling over him to a train hitting his truck.  Anyone who ever met him will never forget him as he was generous, funny and helped more people than we will ever know. A well-respected local businessman of over 50 years, Larry will truly be missed by family, friends, his many clients and the entire surrounding communities.
In lieu of flowers, please pay forward your kindness or a donation in his honor to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 729 Victoria Street, Kamloops, BC, V2C 2B5.

Ackerman, Alfred

September 25, 1935 – February 20, 2017
at the age of 81 years

Celebration of Life:  Sunday, May 28, 2017, 1:00 p.m., Eagle River Golf and Country Club, Sicamous, BC

On February 20, 2017, Alfred (Al) Ackerman passed away at his home, in Sicamous, BC.
Al was born in Erickson, BC on September 25, 1935. He grew up on family farms in Erickson, BC, Mission, BC and Blackfalls, AB. He headed off at a young age to make his way in the world, beginning with road construction and heavy equipment operation in Alberta. While working in the Wetaskiwin, AB area, he met and married Marlene (Krause) on June 20, 1958 and they shared 58 years of life’s adventures together. They had two children, Cindy and Wade. While in Wetaskiwin, Al worked at Pahal Motors as a salesman and later advanced to sales manager.  Al, with business partner Ray McIntyre, started and operated a farm equipment dealership. During his Wetaskiwin time, he enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and camping trips with family and friends. Learning to fly and piloting his own airplane was another accomplishment.
In 1974, Al and family moved to Canoe, BC to experience the Shuswap area. Al had brief semi-retirement spent boating, fishing and entertaining visiting family and friends.  Then Al and Ray McIntyre, decided a new business venture was in order, they developed an industrial property for a houseboat building enterprise. Next, Al designed and built the Eagle River golf course.
In 1982, Al and Marlene moved to Sicamous and lived at an upstairs suite at the golf course clubhouse until 1988. They then settled in on Rauma Rd, in Sicamous, along the river which became home for Al’s later years. During this time, Al continued with various property development projects in the Sicamous area. Al also took up the sport of golf, which turned into a passion. He loved the challenge of the game and the camaraderie on the course and in the clubhouse. Al and Marlene enjoyed spending many winters as “snowbirds” in the southern United States, travelling by motorhome, exploring and meeting up with friends.
Al’s accomplishments in life were important to him and the relationships made with people along the way were at the centre of his life. Throughout his life, he worked and played hard, tried to get and give a fair deal, his word and handshake mattered. Company was always welcomed – stories and jokes were told, opinions were stated, people were teased, beverages were enjoyed, meals were shared and many hands of cards were dealt, and yes, a few cigarettes were smoked. Some of Al’s favourite things in later life were having coffee with a buddy, pestering Marlene in the kitchen, kicking tires at a dealership, checking up on what was happening around the neighbourhood and town, tinkering in his garage, time outside on the deck appreciating the view and watching a lot of golf. Al had the good fortune of forming many long term friendships. Over the years, neighbours and acquaintances became friends and friends became like family.
So with sadness, along with a wink and a punch in the shoulder, dear Al – Alfie – Dad we say farewell, your strong character and presence will be greatly missed. Your story of a full life, lived large will continue to be told.
Al is survived by his wife Marlene Ackerman, daughter Cindy Bazzana (Ron Pelechaty), son Wade Ackerman and grandson Aaron Bazzana. His sisters Elise (Betty) Wilken, Hilda Campbell, Ann Rylan, Grace Stabeck, sisters in-law Judy Lawton and Gladys Tainsh, brothers in-law Tom Lawton and Ken Titus, along with many nieces and nephews.
Al was predeceased by his parents Anne & Thomas Ackerman, infant children Randy and Todd, sister Joan Zannet, mother and father in-law Amanda & Albert Krause, brothers in-law Andy Wilken, Merle Campbell, Les Rylan, Bill Zannet, Arne Stabeck and Bill Tainsh.
The family wishes to thank friends, special neighbours, Dr. Beech, the staff at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Salmon Arm, BC and the Community Care ladies for all of the support and kindness during the last few months.
A celebration of life will be held in the late spring, when the grass is green.
