Graveside Service:  Saturday, June 7, 2014, 11:00 a.m., St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery, Sorrento
Memorial Service: Saturday, June 7, 2014,
1:00 pm at River of Life Church, Shuswap Lake Estates, Blind Bay

He leaves behind five children—Jenny Crosby (Terry), Jill McGrath (Niall), Juliet Orcutt  (Trevor), Andy Thomson, Leah Reimer (Brent); four grandchildren —Amanda, Cornelius, Silas, Isaac; two brothers Randy and Greg (Angela); parents—Irv and Loni Thomson of Blind Bay; 13 Nieces and nephews; twenty-one great nieces and nephews; and many long-time friends.

Much of his childhood was spent on the family ranch in the Chilcotin, and later in adulthood, with his family in the Nimpo/Anahim Lake area. A real outdoorsman, his passions, were hunting and fishing, woodworking and teaching, though in later years inhibited by multiple disabilities. He taught Core Hunting classes, along with Firearm Safety and Wilderness Survival, for two years in Abbotsford and in Clearwater, BC. He was gifted in sales work and in teaching, both of which he did before his disabilities prevented that. He loved family, friends and his dog, Benny, his constant companion and friend—a true “care dog”. He suffered many years of pain and difficulties, but always kept his faith in God, all the more so as his suffering worsened. He had attended Broadview Church in Salmon Arm when physically able, but in later years was unable to do so. He passed away peacefully in Vancouver General Hospital, surrounded by his five children, his parents, one brother and one sister-in-law. Our very dear son, father, brother and friend—you are now in the arms of Jesus—no more suffering—how glorious!

Leigh, Elizabeth “Bess” (nee McFarlane)

LEIGH, ELIZABETH 159-14July 18, 1921 – May 13, 2014

at the age of 92 years

Elizabeth (Bess) passed away peacefully in the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, after suffering complications from a broken hip. She was born in Paisley, Scotland and had three sisters (Jean, Peggy, and Isobel) and three brothers (Dan, Dave, and Robert). Bess was fortunate to have been very healthy all her life, and, with her positive outlook, was looking forward to many years ahead. Her doctors always told her she would live to be 100, and she was going to prove them right.

In 1955, she and her husband and two sons emigrated to Canada from Newcastle, England. Bess lived in Cambridge until 2012 when she moved to Blind Bay, BC, to live with her son (Douglas) and daughter-in-law (Carmen). On May 3, 2014 she moved in to Piccadilly Square Retirement Residence in Salmon Arm, BC, so that she could enjoy more independence, and make new friends. She was thrilled with her new little one bedroom apartment. Following the death of her husband in 1975, she had lived alone in her own apartment for more than 40 years, and had many friends. She never remarried, as she told us that Thomas was the love of her life. Unfortunately, only three days after moving in to Piccadilly Square, she fell and broke her left hip. Several days later, after hip surgery, she passed away.

During the Second World War, she worked for a company that manufactured Corvette boats for the British Navy. In Cambridge, she worked at Scott Shoe, Collier-MacMillan Book Publishing Company, and Union Gas as a bookkeeper. Bess is predeceased by her husband, Thomas, her grandson, Tom, and all of her brothers and sisters, with the exception of one sister (Isobel) who lives in Scotland. She is survived by her two sons, Robert and Douglas, her granddaughter, Brandy, her grandsons, Austen and Evan, her daughters-in-law, Anita and Carmen, as well as Tracey, Steve, and Jordan and Eric (her ‘adopted’ grandsons), and a sister-in-law, Betty.

Bess was a caring and loving person who overcame many hardships in her life, yet always tried to keep a positive outlook on the future. She just loved life. Bess contributed to many charities during her long life. She was an avid tennis fan, who watched all the Grand Slam events to see her favourite player, Rafael Nadal. As a mother, she always put her family first.

Mom, Grandma, Bess, you will be missed by your family and friends more than you could ever imagine. The memories you leave us with are precious and enduring. You’re now with Thomas, the love of your life.

Many thanks to the wonderful staff at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital and the Piccadilly Square Retirement Residence, as well as Fischer’s Funeral Services.

After playing one of the best flag football games of his season, including a “pick 6” interception and return for TD he tragically passed away in a motor vehicle accident on May 4, 2014.

Rodney was extremely proud of his large family, including Mom Andrea and Dad Bert.  His siblings Shannon (Sujeet), Jason (Diane), Coreena (Jayson), Sean (Kirsten), Daine, Kristopher, and Zachary.  Rod also enjoyed spending time as a “younger uncle” to Taelor (Alex) and Chantal and thought it was hilarious that he was going to be a 14 year old great uncle in August.  He was also very close to and loved by his Auntie Sherrie, Uncle Sherman and Avery as well as his Auntie Madeline.  He has a large extended family and numerous cousins.

Rod will be remembered for having the BIGGEST heart of gold.  He was generous to a fault and would help anyone who needed it.  His big grin could light up a room.  He played guitar, banjo, flag and tackle football.  He had a talent for all things mechanical and loved to help Dad run machines.  Rod was well known for spending his pocket money on himself and his friends as fast as he could earn it.  When he received The Helping Hands award at PleasantValleyChristianAcademy, he was the teacher’s unanimous choice.

Rod’s celebration of life will be held Friday May 16 at 3:30 pm in The Alliance Church located at 2601 43 Ave, Vernon, BC.  Tea reception to follow.

In lieu of cards the family is requesting you print out a 4×6 snapshot of Rod and write a message on the back.  These photos will be made into a memory book for the family.

Graveside Service:  Saturday, April 26, 2014, 10:oo a.m., Malakwa Cemetery
Celebration of Life:  Saturday, April 26, 2014, 1:00 p.m., Sicamous Senior’s Centre

Bror Albert Kilberg was born on December 11, 1926 in Malakwa, BC.  Albert passed away on Tuesday, April 22, after a brief period of hospital care in Salmon Arm with his son Eric and sister Anita by his side.  He leaves to mourn his wife Faye of 59 years, daughter Elaine (Bernie) Butkiewicz of Exshaw, son Eric (Brenda) Kilberg of Salmon Arm and daughter Patricia (Larry) Schuller of Calgary. He also leaves to mourn 8 grandchildren;  Connie (Scott) Stephen of Vanderhoof, Karlene (Derek) Wilson of Airdrie, Bryce Butkiewicz of Victoria, Ryan (Nikki) Kilberg of Calgary, David (Stefanie) Kilberg of Calgary, Trent Kilberg of Saskatoon, Shawn (Kaitee) Schuller of Calgary and Chris (Chelsea) Schuller of Calgary and 12 great grandchildren.  He also leaves behind his 4 sisters; Edie Moule of Calgary, Astrid (Bill) Blomquist of Kelowna, Anita Kilberg of Vancouver and Marilyn (Pete) Nowoczin of Kamloops as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Albert was born to his proud parents Bror and Selma 3 months early weighing in at 4 ½ pounds.  There was very little medical help but his mother did the best she could under the careful watch of the local midwife to monitor his beginning.  In the spring of 1928, the family moved to Vancouver where they bought a home and Albert’s Dad began working for the city.  The depression meant that money was scarce, so in 1933, the family moved to the Cariboo where they homesteaded.  Three years later, word came that Albert’s Great Uncle Peter was ill and wanted the family to move back to Malakwa and take over his farm.   The family packed their belongings in the Cariboo and Albert and his father travelled to Malakwa by horse and covered wagon.  The rest of the family came later.  Farm life was hard work; cows to milk, pigs to feed, wood to chop and growing seed potatoes.   While growing up on the farm, Albert was very fond and good to his sisters.

Albert met Faye at a dance in Canoe in 1952.  He spotted this young girl sitting by herself in a corner and went over to make small talk.  She didn’t have a way back to Enderby, so Albert offered to give her a ride.  Over time Albert was making many trips back and forth from Malakwa to Enderby.  On December 4, 1954 they were married in Vernon.  They made their home in Malakwa and lived there for the next 27 years.  Albert worked for the Blomquist Brothers as a faller and loved the forest and had a deep appreciation for nature.

In 1981 Albert and Faye moved to Enderby.  Their home was always open to friends and family and the coffee was always on. He was born with a natural talent for music and loved to play and sing.  Grandpa was a quiet and very well respected man. He was kind and patient with a gentle heart.  A man of few words but when he spoke one stopped to listen.  Our Dad’s Christian faith helped him face the challenges of Alzheimer’s with grace and courage until his passing

Joe’s legacy to his family is the timber frame house he built with the old Enderby Street Bridge when it was demolished that he purchased for fifty dollars.  Joe built the home himself with Mary and the boys help and it is fitting that he lived and died in his home.   However, his greatest legacy can be found in the characters and morals of his two sons who carry with them the teachings of honesty, kindness where kindness may not even be due, and trying to do the right thing for those in need who cross their paths in life.  His sons share and value Joe’s keen sense of fairness, social justice, and truth.

Joe is greatly missed by Mary, his eldest son Michael and wife Raechel, his grandchild and apple of his eye Shayla Lee Swanson, and son Erik and Denise.   Joe’s eight younger brothers and sisters residing in the United States have missed Joe since he left for Canada although there have been visits here and there.   In descending birth order, they are:  Dr. Michael John Swanson, Mary Kathryn Minner, Paul Malcolm Swanson, Stephen Stanley Swanson, Mark Gerard Swanson, and Peter Christopher (Chris) Swanson, James William Swanson and Patricia Ann Hurley as well as their respective spouses.  Joe’s nieces and nephews he leaves behind are Jessica Rose, Brittany Katherine and Joshua Watkin Hurley as well as Michelle, Zachary, Daniel and Thomas Swanson.   Joe also has two step-nephews Logan and Brayden, Zachary’s brothers.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be announced at a later date in the spring to allow time for family members to make the necessary arrangements for travel.

Watson, Mary Jean

May 27, 1910 – February 25, 2014
at the age of 103 years

Celebration of Life: United Church, Salmon Arm, Sat. May 31, 2014 @ 1 pm

Mary Jean (nee Murdoch) Sinclair Watson passed away peacefully Feb.25, 2014 at Bastion Place, she was 103.
Jean, as she was called, was predeceased by George Sinclair in 1943 and Dave Watson in 1988. She is survived by son Donald Sinclair and daughter Isabel Sinclair, grandchildren Doug Sinclair, Kelsey (Sinclair) Norlin and Megan (Sinclair) Frances and six great-grandchildren.
Jean was born in Markdale, Ont. in 1910 to Emeline and Arthur Murdoch. Her father enjoyed all things Scottish and ordered kilts form Scotland for his children, later Don and Isabel would wear them as well. Mother loved music and was given a Steinway piano for her twelfth birthday, the piano would figure largely in her life. She also loved the pipes and we would have a piper, the masterful Jim Wright, at her birthdays form age 90 on.
Jean wanted to be a teacher but her father wanted her to be a nurse. She graduated from U.B.C. Nursing program with a class of seven women in 1933. While Jean was playing the piano at a U.B.C. dance George Sinclair, president of his engineering class, came over and introduced himself. Upon graduation Jean worked as a Public Health nurse in Vancouver. George and Jean were engaged for four years waiting for him to become employed. They were married Aug.10, 1938 at The Canadian Memorial Church in Vancouver. Family friend and founder George Fallis Sr. officiated at their marriage.
After marriage George and Jean moved to Wells, B.C. where George was employed as a mining engineer. Jean’s two children Don and Isabel were born there in 1941 and 1943. George was tragically killed in a mining accident on Aug.24, 1943.
Both Jean’s parents, had passed on before she was twenty, one of TB the other of cancer, so at this time Jean’s father-in-law Donald (Dan) Sinclair invited her and the children to come and live with him. He had homesteaded 320 acres on Lakeshore Rd. in 1894 which he cleared with Clydesdale horses. Dan was a member of the first Salmon Arm Council. Later Jean built her own home just below Dan’s house.
After moving to her new home she ran a kindergarten out of her basement for a number of years, later she worked as a nurse in Dr. Bennett’s office.
Jean was involved in many local groups, The United Church (she played the piano for the Sunday School), The Eastern Star, Rainbow Singers, Senior’s Club, and The Horticultural Society. She also attended the Symphony and Les Ellenor’s literature series at Okanagan College. She enjoyed bridge, whist and in later years, rummy.
She loved flowers and also giving them away (and giving things away in general), she often would go to the farmer’s market and fill her scooter basket up with flowers and drive up to Pioneer Lodge to give them to the residents. She enjoyed picking flowers around Bastion and nearby, usually with permission, and to give them away as well. She loved to take her friends for drives in her badly battered car. She was infamous for her lack of good driving habits but, although she once wiped out the ICBC office window or was it Wee Willie’s, or both, she never had a serious accident. Also, an indication of her durability was that after her third hip fracture her doctors told us she would likely not survive for more than six months (it would be another 9 years).
She was generous with her time and possessions and donated to local charities. When a South African family who had moved here lost their home in a fire she invited them to come and live at her house.
She met Dave Watson who shared an interest in horticulture and they were married in 1978. They had trips to the Caribbean, Hawaii and England to visit Isabel, Scotland, and Holland for the tulips. Dave passed in 1988 and Jean moved into an apartment and then later to assisted living in 2002.
After breaking her hip for a third time she moved in 2005 to Bastion Place where she was exceeding well cared for. The family is grateful that she could spend her last years there and wish to thank the Bastion staff and volunteers for their many kindnesses.
She was out-going and known for her smile and her memory.
She was also notorious for driving her scooter. A limerick written by her son for her 90th birthday goes like this:
Granny turns ninety today
Granny turns ninety today
And everyone’s happy to say
Her car’s off the road
But like Mr. Toad
When she hops on her scooter
We pray.
Jean led a courageous and inquisitive life and will be missed.
A Celebration of Life will take place at The United Church, Sat. May 31, 2014 @1pm (she would have been 104 on May, 27).
