Anita Edna Murray (McCelvey) aka “Nits” was born in Penticton, B.C., 1924 and passed away peacefully at home in Salmon Arm, B.C. on Sunday, November 26, 2023, just short of 100 years.
She is predeceased by her husband Bill and her daughter Dianne. She is lovingly survived by four children Elaine, Heather, Bill (Betty) Ellen, her son-in-laws John and Harald, 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Anita grew up in Kelowna, B.C. where she met and married Bill Murray. There they raised their five children before moving to Salmon Arm in 1965 to buy a farm in Deep Creek.
Anita was a good friend to many and will be remembered by family and friends for her strong work ethic working in the restaurant industry. She mentored many young women in their first time jobs waitressing. She carried many fond memories from those years of her life. She also spent time volunteering in her community (Gospel Mission in Kelowna)
When Anita was not working you could find her digging in the dirt in her beautiful garden, out fishing with family, exploring with her metal detector, knitting many a sweater or slipper, playing solitaire or crib, or yelling BINGO!! She loved to dance and was an avid reader.
Anita lived a long and remarkable life. We were all so fortunate to have her in our lives and are so grateful to have so many wonderful memories. She will be loved forever in our hearts and will be deeply missed but we smile knowing she will be doing a little jig now with those who went before her.

With great sadness we announce that on November 24, 2023 Allen left this world, lighting up the skies for us all with an incredible sunrise, and made his way to heaven.
Allen is survived by his loving wife Joan, his daughter Lianne (Brent) and son Kristopher (Leslie) as well as his grandchildren Alexander, Braydon, Graham and Rielle.
Born on Christmas Day 1936 in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, Allen was the first of 7, all boys, born to George and Elmina Hein. As a family they moved several times before settling in Fort St. John, where he lived and worked for his father in a sawmill. At 22 he joined the Royal Canadian Airforce and trained as a Radar Technician. He was incredibly proud of his Airforce career and told countless stories of his adventures, friends, challenges and accomplishments.
Once married he and his new bride, Joan, set off on their biggest adventure, pulling a single wide mobile home from Calgary, Alberta to Moisie, Quebec where they were stationed and eventually had their first child, Lianne. After leaving the Forces they moved to northern BC where their son Kristopher joined, and completed, their family.
After a few moves and career changes, they ended up living in the lower mainland, but when it came time for both he and Joan to retire, the Shuswap caught their eye and their hearts, and in 2000 they worked together to build their retirement home in Anglemont. Shortly after moving, Allen also found his spiritual home at St. David’s Anglican Church in Celista, where he served as a lay minister. This was where he realized his true passion, among the wonderful community of St David’s.
Allen was a man who loved his desserts, dark beer, and good scotch. He enjoyed a warm campfire, debating theology and playing computer solitaire. He had a soft spot for puppies, cuddly cats, babies and a good sermon.
Most of all, he loved his family fiercely and found his deepest joy in their being together.
A memorial will be held in the spring at St. David’s church.

Joyce’s story began on December 11, 1943 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She was the 5th of Dan & Margaret Wutzke’s 6 children. Her family moved near Lumby, BC, and then settled on a farm along the Peace River in northern Alberta in 1951. They also had a house in the nearby town of Berwyn so Joyce could attend school and piano lessons. Dan & Margaret surrounded their children with love, kindness, music, and fun. These values guided Joyce for the rest of her life.
After graduating from high school in 1961, she spent 5 years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, becoming a Registered Nurse and then a Public Health Nurse. It was here that she made several lifelong friends (sisters) among her classmates. She worked as a Public Health Nurse at Innisfail, Alberta, Clearwater, BC and Rutland, BC.
In 1966, she spent 8 ½ months in New Zealand and discovered her love for traveling. It was also during this time that she discovered a passion for downhill skiing, hiking, camping, and enjoying the outdoors. Other trips throughout her life included adventures to Japan, Scotland, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, Australia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Africa, Canada, and the USA.
She moved to Salmon Arm and married Clayton Wesley Lank in December 1975. Becoming Mom to Lundy, Cody & Saralea, Mother-in-Law to Troy, and Nana to Ella, Tate & Wes were the most important and fulfilling roles of her life. She embraced Clay’s Australian children and their families. She was incredibly proud of her family and was always there to support, encourage, and celebrate. She was the biggest fan and most dedicated sports Mom/Nana, attending almost every game and keeping thorough statistics. She knew the location of every baseball diamond and football field throughout the province and the details of each player and their families.
Music was a huge part of her life from an early age. She played with her family for old-time dances and was the pianist/organist for countless church services, weddings, and funerals at the First United Church in Salmon Arm for 24 years. She cherished every student she met, every teacher/musician she worked with and every note she played during her 18 years as music accompanist for School District No 83. She loved her restaurant gig where she got to play all her favorites, including “Unforgettable,” “Georgia On My Mind,” and “What A Wonderful World.” She enjoyed playing with the Shuswap String Orchestra in her later years.
Joyce loved people and had the most kind, generous, and inclusive heart. She effortlessly made connections with people and was genuinely interested in everyone’s story. “Never nosy, just interested!” She truly celebrated and appreciated each day and inspired others to do the same. Her biggest wish in life was for everyone in the world to be kind to each other.
Furry friends played a special role in Joyce’s life, especially her horse Waco, cat Riley, and dogs Patti and Lulu.
Despite Joyce’s declining health, she remained brave, positive and gracious until the end. Joyce’s story is not over. Her memory and love will live on in her family, friends, and anyone who was lucky enough to cross her path. Think of her when you see a full moon, ski in the sunshine, hike a mountain trail, drink a good cup of coffee, groove to a tune, admire a flower, or cheer for your favorite sports team.
At Joyce’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joyce Lank Memorial Scholarship Fund at Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union (or e-transfer joycelank@outlook.com) to support a student pursuing music in their post-secondary studies.

On Monday evening November 13th, Inge passed away peacefully at Shuswap Lake General Hospital at the age of 94.
Inge was born in Eddelak, Schleswig-Holstein in Germany on January 24th, 1929. She was the youngest of 2 children born to Elisabeth and Henri Knote and a sister to Gert Knote. She was predeceased by her parents, brother, sister-in-law Elfriede and husband Hans Joachim Rakow.
Inge is survived by her 2 children: Karin (Ted) of Salmon Arm and Frank (Leslie) of Wabamun, Alberta. She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren: Jacob (Katie), Karla, Amanda (Charles), Dillon and Cam; and 6 great grandchildren: Reilly, Kadyn, Sarah, Danielle, Bailey and Dawson; and 2 nieces Helga (Andy), Ursula (Les) and their children Holly (Quin), Eric (Jillian) and their grandchildren Archer and Sutton; and cousins Volker (Gabi), Angelika (Sam) and Kirsten in Germany.
In the almost 95 years that Inge lived, the world and her life went through many changes. She survived the 2nd World War in Germany which very much coloured her approach to living with thrift and gratitude. Inge immigrated to Canada with Hans and small daughter Karin in 1957, first living in Winnipeg where she gave birth to her son Frank. Next, she lived in one home in Sherwood Park for 34 years, then Salmon Arm for the past 24 years (7 of them in Piccadilly Terrace Retirement Residence). She learned to read and write English, learned new customs and how to drive a car in her 40’s. As global technology rapidly progressed, Inge was at first resistant but then embraced it in her 80’s as she discovered the wonder of communicating with computer, email, Facebook and texting on her cell phone. She wrote her Autobiography and translated her mother’s autobiography to English for the family to enjoy.
Inge loved to garden, sew, crochet, bake and stitch needlepoint pictures. She enjoyed the process of creating and shared her many creations with family. She also loved to travel with Hans, and enjoyed several trips to mainland Europe, England, across Canada and into the US. As Inge was the family archivist, the family has been blessed with about 30 photo albums, ancestry information and documents dating back to the 18th century, and a computer full of digital photos.
We will all miss her sense of humour, joking, laughter and contagious big smile.
A grave side service will be held in the late spring 2024 at Mount Ida Cemetery, followed by a gathering.
We thank all the staff at Piccadilly Terrace and the IH Care Aides for creating a loving family and home for Inge to live independently for many years. She loved living there and enjoyed her daily interactions with everyone. As well, we thank all the doctors, nurses and staff at Shuswap General Hospital for their care and empathy.

A celebration of Bob’s life will take place at First United Church in Salmon Arm, on Sunday, November 26 at 1:30 p.m. with a reception to follow in the church hall.
Robert Ernest Harold Scales, known to everyone as Bob, passed away in his hometown of Salmon Arm, BC on November 5, 2023, after a short illness. Bob was predeceased by his wife Martha, younger brother Jim, and stepson Chris. He leaves behind his daughter Karen (Robert), and sons Alan (Tami) and Paul (Melanie). He is fondly remembered by his stepchildren Susan, and Gord (Mila). Bob’s family included grandchildren, Caitlin, Giordano, Kendra, Anna, Aaron, Jennifer, Allison, Tyrell, Trenton and Taisha, and great grandchildren Kaiden, Austin, Adelyn, Iris, Daisy, and Kai.
Bob was born in Revelstoke, BC and grew up in Salmon Arm. As a young man, Bob worked at many of his father’s and uncle’s businesses, set type for the Salmon Arm Observer and picked fruit, before joining a family friend’s company as an electrical apprentice. Working for various electrical firms, Bob travelled and lived throughout BC, including in Cranbrook, where he met and married his first wife Mardy in 1955. While wiring the new church in Smithers, Bob spent evenings in conversation at the home of the local minister and his wife that ignited his desire to join the clergy. Early postings for the United Church of Canada included Texada Island, Port McNeil, and Alert Bay. After completing his studies at Vancouver School of Theology, Bob was officially ordained as a United Church minister in 1962.
Bob served in the United Church Central Mainland Marine Mission on the Robert C. Scott, the Thomas Crosby IV, and the Thomas Crosby V. in various capacities, including Skipper, Missionary, and Mate. On the land, he served congregations in Smithers, Houston, Telkwa, Kelowna, Prince George, Gibsons, Davis Bay, and Surrey and was Presbytery Officer, based in Terrace. In addition to these pastoral charges, he worked at a wide variety of jobs, including millwright, warehouseman, and cabinetmaker. When Bob retired from the Ministry, he and Martha built their dream home in Halfmoon Bay, where they spent several years running a bed and breakfast before returning to Salmon Arm.
A true carpenter at heart, Bob always had home projects on the go, often involving removing walls and replacing windows, decks, and kitchen cabinets. Even while vacationing at the family cabin in Sunnybrae, he kept busy making home and property improvements.
Retirement meant that Bob could spend even more time in his meticulously organized workshop, doing fine woodwork projects which were gifts or donations to worthy causes. His knowledge of church business and construction, combined with a passion for social issues, made him an invaluable member of various church committees. He also enjoyed making wine (served for Happy Hour promptly at 4:00), reading, doing crossword puzzles, spoiling his dogs, and reflecting and reminiscing of the time spent in the misty fjords of the north coast.
The family is deeply appreciative of the staff of Piccadilly Terrace, who created a comfortable, caring environment for Bob over the last few years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the SPCA or the Shuswap-Revelstoke branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Marie was born in Russell, Manitoba and passed away peacefully in Kamloops, BC after a long battle with cancer.
She was predeceased by her parents, parent-in-laws, three brothers, two brother-in-laws, one sister-in-law, three nephews and one niece. Marie is survived by her husband Lenard of 58 years, daughter Teri (Craig), son Kent (Cindy) and grandchildren Ben and Hunter.
Marie was an excellent homemaker, office administrator and handed out demo samples at Costco but her favourite role other than being a Mom and Grandma was working at the Christian Bookstore in Kamloops. She enjoyed road trips with friends and family, travelling to tropical sun destinations and several cruises where she could enjoy fine dining every evening and see the shows. A highlight vacation was when she took her daughter and daughter-in-law to New York City for a girls’ trip where they created many fun memories. Prior to her illness she travelled to Israel with Len in February 2019 and really enjoyed this. Marie was very active and at the age of 65 she joined Boot Camp classes at the local gym which inspired the younger participants. She was an expert seamstress and enjoyed baking pies, reading and watching home improvement shows.
Marie was a Christian, attended church for over 60 years and was involved in many church activities. She read her bible and devotional daily until a few days before she went into hospice.
Donations can be made in Marie’s name to the Kamloops Hospice Association where she spent her last days. This hospice is a beautiful, warm and calming environment with compassionate staff who are very gifted at providing end-of-life care and support to the family.

Kirk passed away quietly, in the loving company of his partner Wendy and his beloved dog Buddy, after being presented with the many challenges of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and COPD.
He is survived by his children, Damien and Rachel Birdsey and their mother Kelly Haluska, Sebastian and Nathaniel Birdsey and their mother Marissa. His siblings, Wendy, Suzan, Jill Barber, Kevin and their children and grandchildren. Brothers-in-law Bruce Barber and William Bailey. He is predeceased by his parents Syd and Reta.
Kirk grew up in St. Davids with his parents and siblings doing all the things that kids did in St. Davids back then, tobogganing and skating, dirt biking, playing sports and hiking on the Bruce Trail with his Dad. He excelled in whatever he did, especially sports. His love of music, and playing the drums in several bands toured him around the country. He was a passionate collector of Coca-Cola memorabilia.
Kirk made immediate connections with everyone he met, with his kind words, big smile and infectious laugh. After schooling he apprenticed in construction and as a stone mason mainly working with granite in the monument business. He took those skills with him when he moved to Sicamous, BC where he started his own business creating and restoring monuments. He fell in love with the natural beauty and resources of Sicamous and spent much time boating, golfing and riding his motorcycle.
His enthusiasm for life will be missed by family and friends alike.

“Bobbie” was born on the family farm in Snowden, Saskatchewan on August 22, 1936, to Holger and Ina Olson and passed away in Salmon Arm on November 1, 2023 at the age of 87. He is survived by his older brother Erik (Anne) Olson. Reportedly, as a toddler learning to speak, he repeatedly said “bob-bob-bob-bob” and the nickname stuck for a lifetime.
Bob married Betty Bjornson on November 10, 1962. They had 4 children together, Kelly Olson (Janeen), Jodi Huard (Elton), Chris Olson, and Stephanie Fletcher (Lindsay). Bob also has eleven grandchildren.
Bob was a skilled heavy equipment operator, truck driver, and handyman. He instilled a strong work ethic in all his children, often taking them along for the day and letting them “drive” the equipment.
Bob was married a second time, to Agustina (Tina) Alvarado on June 9, 1996. Tina currently lives in Los Algodones, Mexico.
Bob will be remembered for his stories, escapades, smile, and mischievous “twinkle” in his eye. Whether just meeting him, or knowing him for years, most would describe Bob as an unforgettable “character”.

at the age of 99 years:
With heavy hearts we announce that during the night of October 30th, William (Bill) Harms was called home by his beloved Lord and Savior. He was 99 years old. Bill’s passing was peaceful and he welcomed it. His faith in his heavenly father was as sure as the sunrise.
Bill is survived by his dear wife of 71 years, Jeanette and his children Faith (Terry) Hayman, Grant (Laurie) Harms, Sharon (Norm) Miller, and Stephen (Michelle) Harms. He was the cherished grandfather of Melody and Lief Hayman, Kirsten and Bridget Harms, Travis, Andrew, Carl, Janae and Brady Miller, and Carter, Celeste and Chantelle Harms, as well as seven great grandchildren. Bill was predeceased by his sisters Mary and Eileen, and his brothers Abe, Sam, Art and Ed.
Bill was born on 5th May, 1924, in Drake, Saskatchewan, the third of seven children of William and Helena Harms. When Bill was three, he contracted polio which resulted in his left side being weakened for the rest of his life. He credited his recovery to the extraordinary efforts of his mother and God’s healing power. As a result of this impairment, Bill worked hard and sought God’s help and grace his whole life to achieve physical goals that others accept as routine. Even in his 99th year he would dutifully maintain his in-house walking routine with his walker.
Bill’s family moved to Rosthern where they lived and schooled until 1941 when the family moved to New Westminster, BC. Though Bill grew up in a Mennonite family and church, while in New Westminster he attended a meeting featuring L.E. Maxwell of Prairie Bible Institute which inspired him to attend Prairie Bible Institute, which he did from 1943-47.
In 1950, Bill answered a calling to become a missionary with TEAM to Japan, learning the language and ministering to the people of a country still suffering from the ravages of the Second World War. While there he met and married his beloved wife of 71 years, Jeanette, and together they had the first three of their four children. For 12 years Bill and Jeanette shared God’s love, built churches, saw the work of the Holy Spirit and made many close friends.
In 1962 Bill and Jeanette and their family came back to Canada and began work in the Japanese United Church of Canada, building and pastoring churches in Kelowna (where #4 Stephen was born), Lethbridge, Hamilton, Surrey and Vancouver, in each location making new friends and seeing many touched by the good news of God’s saving grace in Christ Jesus.
Bill officially retired in 1984, the same year he moved to Salmon Arm, BC though he never stopped working to support the local Christian community as well as continuing to minister to Japanese congregations in cities and towns in the region. “Grandpa’s Beautiful Garden” was a source of pride as well as edible treasures for children and grandchildren.
Bill is remembered as being a man of immense faith, constant grace and selfless dedication to the work of God wherever he went. His powerful prayers brought God’s healing, comfort and protection to many. His sense of humour, his wisdom and his kindness will be greatly missed. He was a dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who made the world a better place.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7,8.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to The Canadian Bible Society, https://biblesociety.ca/.

Myron Dale Reise, 87, passed away peacefully at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC on October 27, 2023. Myron was most recently a resident of the Piccadilly Terrace Retirement Home in Salmon Arm, BC. Born in Burtonsville, Alberta on August 13, 1936 to Harold and Christine Reise, Myron lived in a number of small Alberta towns as his father established his blacksmithing trade. After attending Camrose Lutheran High School in Camrose, AB in the 1950’s, Myron joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and began his training in electronics and communications. After an initial period of military service, Myron re-enlisted in the R.C.A.F. shortly after meeting and marrying his wife Eleanor Penner in 1958.
While serving in the air force, Myron travelled to Florida with Eleanor and their two eldest children, where he continued to learn his trade in military electronics. The first three of their children were all born on air force bases, with the youngest two children arriving after Myron had left military service to begin his civilian career. Myron’s outstanding 25-year career with BC Tel began in 1970 in Nelson, BC, with later stops in Dawson Creek and finally in Kamloops. Myron was proud of the pioneering and innovative teamwork he was involved in during the early years of his career in telecommunications, and later marveled at the new technology being incorporated at a pace he described as stunning.
Myron’s favourite memories were of his family. He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor, who passed away in 2012, and his eldest child Myron (Patti), who passed away in 2021. Myron dearly enjoyed his family and friends–both old and new–and spoke positively about the other residents and staff at Piccadilly Terrace Retirement Home in Salmon Arm where he spent his final years.

at the age of 86 years:
It is with profound and deep sadness the family of Edward Neil Cook announce his passing on September 13, 2023 in Salmon Arm, BC at the age of 86. Dad was born in Mountview, NB to the late Earl and Nita (Bowser) Cook on January 9, 1937.
Dad worked in the mines in northern Manitoba when he was very young, then went on to become a mechanic and finally a teacher of mechanics at Tantramar Regional High School. He always loved working with his students and fought to keep the trades a viable option for study in the school system. With the help of fellow teacher and friend Rod Smith, they built a cottage on PEI which family and many, many friends enjoyed for several years. After the sale of that, he and Mum began what would become a lifelong passion for travelling with their RV throughout North America. Once retired, he and Mum moved to Cherryville, BC while spending winters in the south in Arizona and California. They moved to Salmon Arm once they stopped travelling south where they enjoyed several years before Mum’s passing.
Dad loved animals but most especially cats, and the one he left behind has gone to live with his grandson and granddaughter-in-law in Victoria. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and we often joked that he should have been a pioneer. We will most especially miss his dry wit and sharp sense of humour.
Edward was predeceased by his wife Viola in 2021 and his son Derek in 2015. He is survived by his daughter Janet (Dave) Comox BC, his son Roger (Sherri) Courtenay BC, his grandsons Adam (Kayli), Noah, and his granddaughters Sophie (River) and Bronwen.
If so, desired donations to charities of choice or the SPCA in Dad’s memory would be most appreciated.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, especially Dr. Erasmus Bonthuys and Dad’s nurse Jenna.

Brett chose his time to leave this earth surrounded with love, positive energy, and peace. Brett was born in Salmon Arm BC on October 6, 1983.
After graduating from high school in Salmon Arm, Brett moved to Kamloops, BC where he worked at Sun Peaks for a year. He then returned to Sorrento where he was employed at Adams Lake Lumber. In 2004 Brett met Amanda and in 2006 they bought a home in Chase BC where they welcomed their beautiful little baby girl, Kadie Marie, into their lives. In August of 2011, two months after the passing of his younger brother Nick, Brett suffered a major stroke. The doctors were amazed that he recovered without any serious damage mentally or physically, but that was the start to Brett’s decline in health.
Over the past 12 years he battled many health issues and through all of this he never once complained or said why me, he went through life with strength and dignity. Kayaking, camping, hunting, and being outdoors was Brett’s passion. He loved people and visiting with friends and family. He absolutely loved and adored his nieces and family. Brett was a compassionate, loving, gentle soul with a witty sense of humor and contagious laugh. He left this world too early and will be missed deeply by all who knew him. But he is with his brother Nick, his cousin Jeff, grandfathers Vaughn LeDuc and Rod Larsen and numerous friends and family in a beautiful place filled with love and peace.

With sadness we share news of the peaceful passing of Marian Ruth Schalm (née Valleau), 88, on Sunday, September 10th, 2023, in Salmon Arm, BC. Marian is predeceased by her husband Henry Schalm. She is survived by her son Warren Schalm (Terry), daughter Wanda Schalm (Al), and three grandchildren, Philip (Keltie), Rachel (Chris) and Trajen (Celia). She is also survived by three great grandchildren, Theo, Arietty and Poppy. A fourth great grandchild is due next February. She is remembered fondly by her brother Allen, sisters Jean, Myrna and Hazel, and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
Born and raised in Wainwright, AB, as a teenager Marian was an avid softball player and a budding entrepreneur who owned and operated her own car wash. She loved cars and trucks and was one of the first people to own a Studebaker in the Wainwright area. In addition to her roles of wife and mother, she worked as a telephone operator, school bus driver, and taxi driver. Yellow Cab car 55, owned and operated by Marian, was a fixture of the Kamloops Yellow Cab fleet for almost 24 years, and she had many regular customers. Taxi driving is something she truly loved.
Marian met her husband Henry through a mutual acquaintance while she was attending Bible School in Edmonton and they were married a year later in October 1958. They lived in North Vancouver, BC, Squamish, BC, Wainwright, AB, Pemberton, BC, and Houston, BC, before settling permanently in Salmon Arm, BC in 1963.
Until loss of vision forced her to stop driving, Marian loved being behind the wheel. A passion she passed on to her children and grandchildren. She could have a heavy right foot, which didn’t always go unnoticed by the police, but had an excellent driving record given the millions of miles she doubtlessly wracked up. She hated flying, but this didn’t stop her from seeing much of Canada and the US through her car window, with Henry, and sometimes grandchildren, in tow.
Marian had a special talent for finding quirky and interesting toys that never failed to captivate and amuse her grandchildren. Meals in restaurants could be long, but she always had something new and interesting to pull out of her vest pocket or trademark plastic bag. Visits with grandma were always highly anticipated and, between visits, postcards, letters and packages, plastered with stickers and tape, arrived on an almost weekly basis. She played a mean game of crokinole and never ceased to keep her grandchildren entertained and challenged.
Those who knew her well will remember Marian as a unique and deeply spiritual person who lived life her own way. Although she avoided the limelight, she loved being with other people and always took a genuine interest in their lives. She is and will continue to be missed by all those who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Red Cross in her honour.

After a lifetime dedicated to protecting and promoting the outdoors, Connie Harris (Crowley) passed away on September 9.
Connie was instrumental in the creation of Shuswap Outdoors! and served as its President for many years. Through a Canada Works Grant, she supervised a work-crew that was responsible for the establishment of the original Larch Hills ski trails. In 1976, she co-authored the 2nd edition of “Trails to the Shuswap” a year-round hiking and XC-skiing guide and gave XC-skiing and backpacking courses in Adult Ed. classes. In earlier years, Connie served with the “Shuswap and Thompson River Research Association” that helped prevent the diversion of Shuswap waters into the Okanagan. When the City of Salmon Arm sought to dam and divert a Larch Hills watershed to the city for domestic use, she served on a Provincial Committee to help stop that environmentally disruptive plan. In the 1990s Connie served with the LRMP (Land Resource Management Plan) developing a plan for management of Crown lands in the Okanagan/Shuswap that resulted in the establishment of many protected areas, including Violet Cr. Watershed in the Larch Hills. In addition to being a Shuswap riding candidate for the Green Party in both federal and provincial elections, she was editor of “The Green Alternative,” a monthly TV show in Kamloops, which aired for 6 years. Connie was a professional geologist, receiving her BSc (Hons.) at the University of Manitoba, and she lectured at Western Washington University, Ferris State College in Michigan, as well as at Okanagan College here in Salmon Arm and Vernon. She also did research at the University of Colorado’s Alpine Research Station on Niwot Ridge, CO, and took part in the University of Washington’s Alpine Plants Botany Field Course in the Cascade Mountains. She was an accomplished beekeeper and Master Gardener. As an outstanding community volunteer, Connie received a Shuswap Trails Award in 2010 for her contribution to trails in the region, and a Senate 150 Commemorative Medal in 2017 for building and promoting community trails as a legacy for the future. She loved the nearby mountains and enjoyed every opportunity to explore, climb and traverse mountain wilderness environments in the Purcells, Selkirks and Monashee Ranges with her friends in the affectionately named “Tang Gang” and partner Tom.
A long life well lived, Connie was born, January 8, 1938 at Maryfield, SK. She is survived by her sisters, Judy Duce (Bill) in Manitoba, and Eleanor Verleye in Ontario, as well as her niece, Amanda Hopcraft and nephews, John, Michael, and Richard Labram, and Kenny Hopcraft (Vonda), Manitoba.

Alfred Mark Cawston, born August 12, 1928 in Cawston, BC, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 8, 2023, where he resided at Bastion Place in Salmon Arm, BC.
Mark started his life in Cawston, BC with his parents Alfred Hamilton “Ginty” and Myrtle Cawston. He was the youngest of 5 with siblings Jack, Dick, Don, and Betty.
Mark started on the rodeo circuit as a young cowboy, riding bulls and bucking broncos, then started his family. When his children came into his life, he changed careers to work in mining and blasting. Mark earned a bravery award for trying to rescue a miner from a collapsed mineshaft. Mark also spent a season guiding hunts in the Chilcotin and working on the Coquihalla highway.
Mark had many hobbies throughout his life. He enjoyed reading, kayaking, telemark skiing, rock climbing, playing cards (mostly cribbage – he would hang out at the barber shop on Lakeshore Drive and play crib a lot), tying all sorts of different knots, as well as fly tying and fishing. He would go to the school grounds nearby and practice casting daily, grumbling in jest to those nearby that they were scaring away his fish. ln later years, he enjoyed gardening, where he grew beautiful roses and blackberries. Mark spent a lifetime helping others where he could and will always be remembered for his sense of humour, ready smile, and cowboy wisdom. His other favorite pass time was telling stories and sometimes tall tales, earning the nickname “HS”.
ln Mark’s later years he married Jeannie and spent their 30 years of marriage together in Salmon Arm, Enderby, and Armstrong.
Mark is survived by his loving wife Jeannie, celebrating their 30th year anniversary together on Sept 4th. They were affectionately called the “The Love Train” by the staff as they were always together, wheelchairs linked, wherever they went. Mark was adored by his children Teresa (Mark) Port Alberni, Bruce (Linda) Sechelt, Brenda of Nanaimo, Cheryl (Chris)Victoria, stepchildren Andrea (Bruce), Phyllis {Fleming), Kenny (Sara) all of Salmon Arm, grandchildren Rebecca, Rachel, Lindsey, Mitchell, Erin, Shauna, Kenzie and great grandchildren Edric, Levin, Andrew, Ava, Sydney, and Ryann, as well as many loved nieces and nephews and dear friends and neighbors who he considered family.

at the age of 91 years:
Don was born May 4, 1932, in Vancouver, B.C. to John Rowland “Rollie” Babington and Margaret Ann “Peggy” Millar Babington (McClounie). Don was raised in East Vancouver among his English/Scottish extended family, attended Franklin and Templeton schools, and grew up enjoying his grandparents’ place on Deep Cove with his sister & cousin – both named Anne!
Don’s father served overseas during World War II, and soon after his return, the family moved to Wells, B.C., where his parents became partners in the Wells Hotel. These years have become family legend! Miners paid their hotel tabs with gold nuggets.
Don helped in the kitchen and beer parlor after school, fished on Isaac Lake and roamed Barkerville, in the years before it was restored. He kept stories & maintained friendships from his days in Wells, notably with his classmate Ted North.
Don married Joyce King in 1953. They raised their children, Susan and Jeff, in Burnaby and New Westminster, camping at Sandy Point during summers in the 60s, before separating after 21 years together.
Babs worked at B.C. Tel/TELUS for 40 years. He was on the heavy gang, a lineman and installer, before retiring as a field supervisor in 1992. A photo of Don from the ’50s – working high atop a pole on the Hope-Princeton Hwy – hangs in the union offices. An avid golfer and curler, he won several company championships in both sports through the years.
He was a life member of the Royal City Curling Club and golfed into his 80s. He loved the course in Salmon Arm and was a member there. Don shared his love of golf with his beloved Mom, Peggy, and his last partner, Vera Verreault. He loved & cared for Vera until her death in 2021.
“Wanna party? Wanna play?” Don loved to do both. He was an active member of the Elks, Eagles and Royal Canadian Legion Branch #62. He was a regular at the Barley Station Pub. He played cards, crib, Keno and casinos. He followed TV sports and worked jigsaw puzzles, word searches and crosswords in the Province he would faithfully buy from Kayla at the Salmon Arm Co-op.
Salmon Arm was Don’s home for the last three decades of his life. In recent years he was supported by neighbors, Wayne and Randy, Legion buddies including Bill and Connie, Neil and Brian. His friend Wayne Fisher cared for him through this last winter despite his own ill health.
Thanks are due to Dr. Levins, Blane Ready, Shuswap Lodge, Interior Health, SLGH, Kamloops Hospice, and Vince Fischer for their kindness and support.
He is survived by daughter Susan (John) Folinsbee and their son James (Chantal); by son Jeff Babington, his daughters Brianne, Krystle and their families; his McClounie cousins; his sister Anne Stevens and her sons Henry (Terry), Brian (Myra), Scott (Tiffany) and their families.
Don’s family will gather in the fall to remember a man who was — among other things — a wearer of politically incorrect t-shirts & a strong proponent of eating a medium naval orange each morning.
