Cook, Edward Neil

Cook, Edward Neil

January 3, 1937 – September 13, 2023
at the age of 86 years:

It is with profound and deep sadness the family of Edward Neil Cook announce his passing on September 13, 2023 in Salmon Arm, BC at the age of 86. Dad was born in Mountview, NB to the late Earl and Nita (Bowser) Cook on January 9, 1937.

Dad worked in the mines in northern Manitoba when he was very young, then went on to become a mechanic and finally a teacher of mechanics at Tantramar Regional High School.  He always loved working with his students and fought to keep the trades a viable option for study in the school system.  With the help of fellow teacher and friend Rod Smith, they built a cottage on PEI which family and many, many friends enjoyed for several years. After the sale of that, he and Mum began what would become a lifelong passion for travelling with their RV throughout North America. Once retired, he and Mum moved to Cherryville, BC while spending winters in the south in Arizona and California.  They moved to Salmon Arm once they stopped travelling south where they enjoyed several years before Mum’s passing.

Dad loved animals but most especially cats, and the one he left behind has gone to live with his grandson and granddaughter-in-law in Victoria.  He was an avid fisherman and hunter and we often joked that he should have been a pioneer.  We will most especially miss his dry wit and sharp sense of humour.

Edward was predeceased by his wife Viola in 2021 and his son Derek in 2015. He is survived by his daughter Janet (Dave) Comox BC, his son Roger (Sherri) Courtenay BC, his grandsons Adam (Kayli), Noah, and his granddaughters Sophie (River) and Bronwen.

If so, desired donations to charities of choice or the SPCA in Dad’s memory would be most appreciated.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, especially Dr. Erasmus Bonthuys and Dad’s nurse Jenna.

at the age of 39 years:

For those wishing to say their final goodbyes to Brett, the family welcomes you to come to the Sorrento Memorial Hall on Saturday, September 23, at 1:00pm

Brett chose his time to leave this earth surrounded with love, positive energy, and peace. Brett was born in Salmon Arm BC on October 6, 1983.

After graduating from high school in Salmon Arm, Brett moved to Kamloops, BC where he worked at Sun Peaks for a year. He then returned to Sorrento where he was employed at Adams Lake Lumber. In 2004 Brett met Amanda and in 2006 they bought a home in Chase BC where they welcomed their beautiful little baby girl, Kadie Marie, into their lives. In August of 2011, two months after the passing of his younger brother Nick, Brett suffered a major stroke. The doctors were amazed that he recovered without any serious damage mentally or physically, but that was the start to Brett’s decline in health.

Over the past 12 years he battled many health issues and through all of this he never once complained or said why me, he went through life with strength and dignity. Kayaking, camping, hunting, and being outdoors was Brett’s passion. He loved people and visiting with friends and family. He absolutely loved and adored his nieces and family. Brett was a compassionate, loving, gentle soul with a witty sense of humor and contagious laugh. He left this world too early and will be missed deeply by all who knew him. But he is with his brother Nick, his cousin Jeff, grandfathers Vaughn LeDuc and Rod Larsen and numerous friends and family in a beautiful place filled with love and peace.

He leaves behind his mother Shelley and father Bo, his older brother Jesse (Bernadette} and nieces Ryann and Ellincia, his younger sister Fawn (Oliver), his nieces Nicala and Isla, and the love of his life, his pride and joy, his daughter Kadie Marie. Brett also leaves behind his grandmothers Gail LeDuc, as well as Pat Larsen, numerous aunts and uncles, cousins and friends.

For those wishing to say their final goodbyes to Brett, the family welcomes you to come to the Sorrento Memorial Hall on Saturday, September 23 at 1:00pm

Schalm, Marian Ruth

Schalm, Marian Ruth

June 21, 1935 – September 10, 2023
at the age of 88 years:

Celebration of Life:  Saturday, October 14, 2023, 2:00 pm, Fischer’s Funeral Services

With sadness we share news of the peaceful passing of Marian Ruth Schalm (née Valleau), 88, on Sunday, September 10th, 2023, in Salmon Arm, BC. Marian is predeceased by her husband Henry Schalm. She is survived by her son Warren Schalm (Terry), daughter Wanda Schalm (Al), and three grandchildren, Philip (Keltie), Rachel (Chris) and Trajen (Celia). She is also survived by three great grandchildren, Theo, Arietty and Poppy. A fourth great grandchild is due next February. She is remembered fondly by her brother Allen, sisters Jean, Myrna and Hazel, and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

Born and raised in Wainwright, AB, as a teenager Marian was an avid softball player and a budding entrepreneur who owned and operated her own car wash. She loved cars and trucks and was one of the first people to own a Studebaker in the Wainwright area. In addition to her roles of wife and mother, she worked as a telephone operator, school bus driver, and taxi driver. Yellow Cab car 55, owned and operated by Marian, was a fixture of the Kamloops Yellow Cab fleet for almost 24 years, and she had many regular customers. Taxi driving is something she truly loved.

Marian met her husband Henry through a mutual acquaintance while she was attending Bible School in Edmonton and they were married a year later in October 1958. They lived in North Vancouver, BC, Squamish, BC, Wainwright, AB, Pemberton, BC, and Houston, BC, before settling permanently in Salmon Arm, BC in 1963.

Until loss of vision forced her to stop driving, Marian loved being behind the wheel. A passion she passed on to her children and grandchildren. She could have a heavy right foot, which didn’t always go unnoticed by the police, but had an excellent driving record given the millions of miles she doubtlessly wracked up. She hated flying, but this didn’t stop her from seeing much of Canada and the US through her car window, with Henry, and sometimes grandchildren, in tow.

Marian had a special talent for finding quirky and interesting toys that never failed to captivate and amuse her grandchildren. Meals in restaurants could be long, but she always had something new and interesting to pull out of her vest pocket or trademark plastic bag. Visits with grandma were always highly anticipated and, between visits, postcards, letters and packages, plastered with stickers and tape, arrived on an almost weekly basis. She played a mean game of crokinole and never ceased to keep her grandchildren entertained and challenged.

Those who knew her well will remember Marian as a unique and deeply spiritual person who lived life her own way. Although she avoided the limelight, she loved being with other people and always took a genuine interest in their lives. She is and will continue to be missed by all those who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Red Cross in her honour.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 14th, at Fischer’s Funeral Home in Salmon Arm, BC.

Harris, Connie (Crowley)

Harris, Connie (Crowley)

January 8, 1935 – September 9, 2023
at the age of 85 years:

                     Memorial Service:  Saturday, October 7, 2023, 11:00 a.m., Fischer’s Funeral Services

After a lifetime dedicated to protecting and promoting the outdoors, Connie Harris (Crowley) passed away on September 9.

Connie was instrumental in the creation of Shuswap Outdoors! and served as its President for many years.  Through a Canada Works Grant, she supervised a work-crew that was responsible for the establishment of the original Larch Hills ski trails.  In 1976, she co-authored the 2nd edition of “Trails to the Shuswap” a year-round hiking and XC-skiing guide and gave XC-skiing and backpacking courses in Adult Ed. classes.  In earlier years, Connie served with the “Shuswap and Thompson River Research Association” that helped prevent the diversion of Shuswap waters into the Okanagan.  When the City of Salmon Arm sought to dam and divert a Larch Hills watershed to the city for domestic use, she served on a Provincial Committee to help stop that environmentally disruptive plan. In the 1990s Connie served with the LRMP (Land Resource Management Plan) developing a plan for management of Crown lands in the Okanagan/Shuswap that resulted in the establishment of many protected areas, including Violet Cr. Watershed in the Larch Hills.  In addition to being a Shuswap riding candidate for the Green Party in both federal and provincial elections, she was editor of “The Green Alternative,” a monthly TV show in Kamloops, which aired for 6 years.  Connie was a professional geologist, receiving her BSc (Hons.) at the University of Manitoba, and she lectured at Western Washington University, Ferris State College in Michigan, as well as at Okanagan College here in Salmon Arm and Vernon. She had studied at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM for 4 years, receiving her MSc. in Geology there. She also did research at the University of Colorado’s Alpine Research Station on Niwot Ridge, CO, and took part in the University of Washington’s Alpine Plants Botany Field Course in the Cascade Mountains.  She was an accomplished beekeeper and Master Gardener.  As an outstanding community volunteer, Connie received a Shuswap Trails Award in 2010 for her contribution to trails in the region, and a Senate 150 Commemorative Medal in 2017 for building and promoting community trails as a legacy for the future.  She loved the nearby mountains and enjoyed every opportunity to explore, climb and traverse mountain wilderness environments in the Purcells, Selkirks and Monashee Ranges with her friends in the affectionately named “Tang Gang” and partner Tom.

A long life well lived, Connie was born, January 8, 1938 at Maryfield, SK.  She is survived by her sisters, Judy Duce (Bill) in Manitoba, and Eleanor Verleye in Ontario, as well as her niece, Amanda Hopcraft and nephews, John, Michael, and Richard Labram, and Kenny Hopcraft (Vonda), Manitoba.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 11:00 am at Fischer’s Funeral Services.

Babington, John Donald “Don”

Babington, John Donald “Don”

May 4, 1932 – August 26, 2023
at the age of 91 years:

Don was born May 4, 1932, in Vancouver, B.C. to John Rowland “Rollie” Babington and Margaret Ann “Peggy” Millar Babington (McClounie). Don was raised in East Vancouver among his English/Scottish extended family, attended Franklin and Templeton schools, and grew up enjoying his grandparents’ place on Deep Cove with his sister & cousin – both named Anne!

Don’s father served overseas during World War II, and soon after his return, the family moved to Wells, B.C., where his parents became partners in the Wells Hotel. These years have become family legend! Miners paid their hotel tabs with gold nuggets.

Don helped in the kitchen and beer parlor after school, fished on Isaac Lake and roamed Barkerville, in the years before it was restored. He kept stories & maintained friendships from his days in Wells, notably with his classmate Ted North.

Don married Joyce King in 1953. They raised their children, Susan and Jeff, in Burnaby and New Westminster, camping at Sandy Point during summers in the 60s, before separating after 21 years together.

Babs worked at B.C. Tel/TELUS for 40 years. He was on the heavy gang, a lineman and installer, before retiring as a field supervisor in 1992. A photo of Don from the ’50s – working high atop a pole on the Hope-Princeton Hwy – hangs in the union offices. An avid golfer and curler, he won several company championships in both sports through the years.

He was a life member of the Royal City Curling Club and golfed into his 80s. He loved the course in Salmon Arm and was a member there. Don shared his love of golf with his beloved Mom, Peggy, and his last partner, Vera Verreault. He loved & cared for Vera until her death in 2021.

“Wanna party? Wanna play?” Don loved to do both. He was an active member of the Elks, Eagles and Royal Canadian Legion Branch #62. He was a regular at the Barley Station Pub. He played cards, crib, Keno and casinos. He followed TV sports and worked jigsaw puzzles, word searches and crosswords in the Province he would faithfully buy from Kayla at the Salmon Arm Co-op.

Salmon Arm was Don’s home for the last three decades of his life. In recent years he was supported by neighbors, Wayne and Randy, Legion buddies including Bill and Connie, Neil and Brian. His friend Wayne Fisher cared for him through this last winter despite his own ill health.

Thanks are due to Dr. Levins, Blane Ready, Shuswap Lodge, Interior Health, SLGH, Kamloops Hospice, and Vince Fischer for their kindness and support.

He is survived by daughter Susan (John) Folinsbee and their son James (Chantal); by son Jeff Babington, his daughters Brianne, Krystle and their families; his McClounie cousins; his sister Anne Stevens and her sons Henry (Terry), Brian (Myra), Scott (Tiffany) and their families.

Don’s family will gather in the fall to remember a man who was — among other things — a wearer of politically incorrect t-shirts & a strong proponent of eating a medium naval orange each morning.

On July 28th 2023, a beautiful, funny soul left this world at the tender age of 84. Fred will be dearly missed, but the mark he left on people will never be forgotten. His sense of humor was tremendous and was only rivaled by his kindness and his wonderful heart. His Italian heritage really showed in his outgoing nature, which drew the wide range of friends he had in his life to him. He was a loving husband to Virginia, his wife of 55 years, and a wonderful father to his children Jodi and Neil as well as grand/great grandfather to many young-uns.

He is probably spending his afterlife relaxing by a scenic lake, catching the odd fish, and surrounded by all the beloved family dogs who adored him and have been waiting for him.

Cummings, Margit Hildegard

Cummings, Margit Hildegard

May 20, 1924 – July 21, 2023
at the age of 99 years:

In loving memory of Margit Cummings, our mother, grandmother and great grandma, who at the age of 99, passed away peacefully at the North Okanagan Hospice in Vernon, BC.

Margit came to Canada from Minnesota, USA in 1927 with her Swedish parents, Sigurd and Hildur Johnson.  They settled in Canoe, BC.  She had 6 siblings, all who have predeceased her except for her twin sister Birgit MacPherson who resides in Nelson, BC.

It was in Canoe that she met and married our beloved father “Charlie.”  After marriage and many job-related moves, they settled in Sicamous in 1967 and spent the last years of their lives there.  Dad predeceased her in 2011 and Mom, independent as she was, continued to live on her own in their home until she was 98.

In remembering Mom, she was a strong-willed woman who did things on her own terms, yet had a soft touch for a stray animal or a wounded bird.  She loved to putter in her garden and to spend time with family and friends.  She always ended her visits with “Oh, do you have to leave so soon!”  A spontaneous drive with Dad anytime, anywhere, any weather topped the cake.  Always hair in place, nails painted and a sparkly necklace until the end – that was our Margit.

Margit is survived by her 5 children: Judy Evans, Sylvia (Ken), Ed (Sue), Lee (Cathy) and Curtis (Sheila), numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

                                                                   Cheers to Margit!

No service by request.

Kurta, Edwina Mary

Kurta, Edwina Mary

November 19, 1936 – July 20, 2023
at the age of 86 years:

Edwina Kurta, age 86, of Salmon Arm, BC (formerly Clearwater and Kamloops), passed away peacefully on July 20, 2023 at the Mt Ida Mews retirement home in Salmon Arm.

Edwina was born in Salmon Arm, BC and grew up on the dairy farm owned and run by her parents Bruce and Edna Aten.  Her favourite pastime growing up was riding her horse Silver and she was often seen galloping across the field standing on Silver’s back.  After attending UBC and attaining a degree in Home Economics, Edwina settled in Kamloops where she and her husband John raised their family.  Edwina taught high school home economics before leaving teaching and becoming a partner/operator of Anderson’s Sewing Centre. Edwina and John moved to Clearwater in 1997 and then back to their hometown Salmon Arm in 2017.

When inside, Edwina enjoyed reading, sewing and creating beautiful cross-stitch pictures.  When outside, she was gardening, horseback riding, hunting, fishing (her favourite pastime) or camping with family or friends down some bumpy backroad. Much time was also spent at ‘the farm’ in the upper Clearwater Valley, where Edwina and John eventually built their retirement home.

Though Edwina was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 60, it did not stop her from travelling and doing all the things she loved well into her late 70s – her fight was fierce to delay as long as possible each stage of mobility loss.

Edwina’s contributions to community included many years with the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Kamloops.  In Clearwater she was involved with Friends of Wells Gray and the Upper Clearwater Community Hall. Edwina and John also donated private land to The Land Conservancy to support the development of the Clearwater Wetland project, which was John’s vision in the early 70’s when they purchased land in the Upper Clearwater valley – with this, Edwina and John have left a legacy that will continue to be expanded for wildlife connectivity.

Things that we will always remember about Edwina – Ever present positive outlook on life.  Patience.  Common saying ‘that’s just the way it is’. The handywoman of the house.  Passion for fishing and exploring many small lakes with John.  Unconditional love of her husband, children and grandkids.  Generosity and willingness to help family and friends.

Edwina was pre-diseased by her husband John (2019) and brothers Jerry (2019) and Bill (2017).  Left to honour Edwina and to remember her love and passion for life are her three children Sheryle (Neil) Campbell, Sandra (Chris Greenaway) Sulyma and Jim (Charlotte) Kurta, her grandchildren Devon, Emma and Keean Campbell, Joel and Emily Sulyma and Anni and Sam Kurta, and her sister Mary Rollier.

On Sunday August 13, the family invites friends and family to celebrate Edwina’s life by coming by anytime between 1:00 to 3:00 pm for tea/coffee/snacks and to visit and reminisce at Mt Ida Hall, 5421- 70th St. SW, Salmon Arm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Land Conservancy (http://conservancy.bc.ca/), directed to the Clearwater Ancient Swamp and Wildlife Corridor Campaign (which will serve to connect to the land that Edwina and John have previously donated) or MS Canada (https://mscanada.ca/)

Preston, Florence “Flo” Verna (Degg)

Preston, Florence “Flo” Verna (Degg)

November 1, 1932 – July 20, 2023
at the age of 90 years:

Memorial Service and Reception will be held at Fischer’s Funeral Home in Salmon Arm, on Saturday, July 29th, at 1pm.

It is with saddened hearts the family of Florence Verna Preston announce her passing at the age of 90 at Bastion Care Facility in Salmon Arm BC.

Florence is predeceased by her parents Christian and Bertha Degg, sisters, Ella McFarlane, Laura Day and Viola Kessler, sister-in-law Joan and brother-in-law Ken Rycroft, son Donald (Schmidek) Preston and grand-daughter Rhonda Preston. She is survived by her sister Doreen McDonald, husband Ernest (Joe) Preston, children Brian (Sharon) Schmidek, Kathy Schmidek (Wilson Tan), Lynda Olson, Ernest (Judy) Preston, Michael (Tammy) Preston, and loving grandchildren, Kelsi (Peter), Kari, Angelo (Camille), Aaron, Beverly (Brian), Gaige, Austin, Danny (Nikki), and great grandchildren, Drake & Ali, Hunter & Annabelle, Keanna & Tayla (Ryan) and great, great grandchild, James. Also, her many and much beloved, nieces and nephews throughout B.C and Alberta as well as extended family members and dear friends.

Flo was born to a farm couple of immigrant parents from Europe who first arrived in the USA and later emigrated to Canada to cultivate and farm in the small community of Bowell, Alberta while raising five lovely daughters and surviving the “great depression” of the dirty 30’s. Florence grew up in the embrace of rich family values and virtues. Raised by the hardworking hands of a determined, devoted and loving father and mother.

Flo left high school in Medicine Hat to work with the Medicine Hat Daily News as a clerk/stenographer, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. She also worked with the Alberta Provincial Department of Agriculture & Water Resources and the Medicine Hat Farmers Co-op. Her clerical and organizational skills and competency served her in securing a position to help found, from the ground up, Medicine Hat OK Ecomony.

She married at the age of 19, and had three children, Kathy, Brian and Donald, and moved to help work the family dairy farm near Dunmore, Alberta. Upon the sale of the farm the couple returned to continue raising their young family in Medicine Hat. The marriage sadly ended.

However, in later years, Flo was wooed by a well-travelled, charming man in a Canadian Armed Forces uniform who had originally emigrated from Peterborough, England, Ernest (Joe) Preston. They married in 1971 and moved to Calgary Alberta to begin their military lifestyle. With the addition of “Joe’s” children, Lynda, Ernie and Michael, they raised their blended family and later moved to Victoria BC where Flo’s love of gardening thrived. She left the mark of her amazing green thumb on every yard and garden she had ever lovingly attended.

In retirement, Flo and Joe moved from Victoria to Nanaimo and later to Nanoose Bay. Then, to be centrally located between family on the Island as well as in Alberta, they moved to the BC interior to Sorrento.

Flo loved the history of the western provinces which led to many a happy day of travel and camping throughout BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The couple later settled to live beside the river in the community of Enderby, in the amazing Okanagan Valley until her passing.

Florence’s genuine love and concern for her family and friends touched many lives in a meaningful and lasting way. Her gentle compassion and guidance made her welcomed company to so many who couldn’t help but love her in return. She was always ready to greet you with the warmest of hugs. She was a precious, authentic, beautiful, spiritual person and a deeply loved and respected wife, mother and friend.

Mom wishes to acknowledge the significance and her fondness for the special bonds she shared with these special friends; Les and Helen Varro, Linda Heinen, Stephanie Soondarsingh, Terry Van Meer and “all” the dear souls of Emanual Lutheran Church in Salmon Arm.

Also, for the cherished support of her Al-Anon friends and the many special caregivers for their gentle, loving kindness throughout the years.

Mom asked that we all “celebrate” in her reuniting with her Heavenly Father on her journey Home.

The family wishes to thank, for their support, Pastor John Kappes and church friends, Dr. Adriaan Louw and staff of Maple Tree Medical Clinic in Salmon Arm, Pharmacist David Robertson and supporting staff of Parkridge IDA Pharmacy in Enderby. Also, the doctors and nurses of Vernon Jubilee Hospital and those of Bastion Place Care centre for providing their gentle and compassionate care of Flo.

Service and Reception will be held at Fishers Funeral Home in Salmon Arm, on Saturday, July 29th, at 1pm.

Should you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations may be forwarded in

Barker, John George “Jack”

Barker, John George “Jack”

May 30, 1925 – July 2, 2023
at the age of 98 years:

Celebration of Life will be August 12 at 2 pm at Shuswap Lake Estates Community Hall.

Jack was a husband to Irene, a father, a grandfather and a great grandfather, he was a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot in WWII and a visionary.

Jack was drawn to move to Blind Bay in 1971 when he was presented with the opportunity to develop a piece of land that was basically trees, a log building and a couple of gravel roads.  His vision took this piece of land and made it into the residential development of Shuswap Lake Estates that you know today.

Shuswap Lake Estates was often termed as Jack’s playground. He loved every minute creating, developing and building the many amenities of Shuswap Lake Estates, the residential lots, the golf course, the marina, the top of the line water and sewer system, tennis courts, pickleball courts and the community spirit.  His mind never stopped thinking about what would work best for Shuswap Lake Estates.  He was always working, celebrating, travelling or building something new.

Jack was very proud of Shuswap Lake Estates and was known for his lengthy tours lasting anywhere from an hour to 3 hours.   He would drive his Mercedes in some rough terrain during various developmental stages.  Many would say “there goes Jack in his ATV Mercedes.”  Touring the development was one of his great joys in life, he continued to go on daily tours right up to the last week of his life.

Jack was only 17 ½ when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a pilot, mostly stationed in India flying supplies into Burma.  The experience had a huge impact on this farm boy from Spy Hill Saskatchewan and he loved to talk about his many war stories including once flying into a monsoon.  He was recognized as a highly qualified pilot and was given special papers that allowed him to fly even during “no fly weather”.  He was loyal to his squadron and along with Irene continued to travel to many squadron reunions in various parts of the world.

In 2015 Jack was honoured with a medal and ceremony in Ottawa along with other members of the armed forces who served in Burma and Hong Kong areas.

He loved to travel and together with Irene visited over 30 countries.  He worked hard and he played hard always driven to learn more, to be more, to see more, he had a thirst for living to the fullest.  He believed there was no such word as “can’t”.

Jack was a dedicated family man.  He loved family get togethers and was instrumental in gathering everyone together for many family occasions.  Jack and Irene had 8 children, 20 grand children and 32 great grandchildren.  Linda (Harvey) Darren, Ryan, Jon, Cara, Heather; Gail (deceased);  Darlene (John) Deidre, Tyron, Kristen; Terry (Lois) Cory, Danniele, Debbie (Erik) Sara, Jeremy; Brenda, Jody, Jenny, Kassondra, Randy; Wendy (Burke) Brandon, Ashlee; Pat (Mark) Tyler, Trevor.  And many step-grandchildren.  Jack and Irene chose to fly each family to their winter home in Phoenix and travel in a motor home to Disneyland, Universal studios and Mexico.  Each grandchild has many fond memories of their trip with Grandma and Grandpa.

Jack accomplished a lot in his life, he was one of a kind, he was determined and dedicated to what he believed.  He always said he wanted to have the song I Did It My Way played at his funeral and we can all say that yes “He did it his way” and what an amazing way that turned out to be.

Thank you Dad, for doing it your way.

Celebration of Life will be August 12 at 2 pm at Shuswap Lake Estates Community Hall.

Jolly, Anita

Jolly, Anita

January 18, 1936 – June 29, 2023
at the age of 87 years:

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear Mum (Anita) at 87 years.   Anita was born in Manchester, England and that was home until they made a life-changing decision as a family.  In 1973 Derrick (husband), Anita, and their two sons (Steven & Martyn) immigrated to Canada and made their home in Salmon Arm, BC.  Anita was a busy lady, raising two boys, working as a bookkeeper for a local business and doing the books for their family’s Construction company.

Even though Anita lived in Salmon Arm for 50 years, when people heard her speak with her pronounced English accent, it never failed to start up a conversation of where she came from. Anita had a special gift of always turning a difficult day into good.  Whomever was in her presence ended up with a smile, sharing some laughter and if needed a hug!  We all can hear her say “Ta Luv— hello sunshine—time for a cuppa?—and her favorite—Bloody Hell!”

Anita was happy and positive in her life.  She enjoyed her time with family, friends, morning coffee catch-up with the ladies, phone conversations with Shirley, Dina, Alison and her family in England.  She treasured her weekly hair appointments (always looking beautiful), reading a good murder/mystery on her Kindle, having fresh deep-fried halibut caught by Nona and Martyn and watching a good football match (soccer).  She loved her apartment and where it was located as everyone there looked out for each other.  She was the first line of security as she knew all the goings and comings!  Nothing got past her!

Anita loved the ocean, and she has a poem that is dear to her heart, and she would like to share.

Peaceful Seas

I wanted to stand near the sea,
And feel that sense of being free;
We found the ocean all at rest,
With peaceful waves so gently blest.
And on the sand, all set aside,
Were treasures left by ebbing tide,
Pebbles gleaming, shells so white,
Sparkling in the morning light.

Raindrops fell from clouds of grey,
The skyline veiled with mist that day,
Yet still the ocean held my heart,
Forgotten those months we’d been apart.
The vision of any open sea
Stays always in my soul with me;
Unchanging rhythm of the flow
Of mighty tides that come and go,
Held safely in eternal hands
As generations walk the sands.
                                 Enid Pearson

Anita is predeceased by her parents, (James and Alma Sanderson, 2 brothers (Wallace and David), sister (Doris), husband (Derrick) 2009, and Son (Steven) 2020. She is survived by son Martyn and his wife Nona and from England–brother (Bernard) & Eileen, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Salmon Arm Ambulance Service and Shuswap Lake General Hospital for their time and care.  Gratitude from our hearts to Interior Health-Palliative-(Susan)-who was so helpful and kind, and the compassion and care from Dr. Rose, whom she loved.

As per Anita’s request there will be no service and lieu of flowers a donation can be sent to Shuswap Lake General Hospital.

We hear you one last time Mum

Cornell, Roy Deveret

Cornell, Roy Deveret

March 24, 1938 – June 27, 2023
at the age of 85 years:

A celebration of life barbeque will be held at Bruce’s house in Cloverdale on August 19th.  At Roy’s request, there will be no formal ceremony but a time for people to get together, share stories, food and drink.  The house will be open to all of his friends from near and far from 3:00 until??  Please either email Laura (johns7@telus.net) or Bruce (bruce.cornell@gmail.com) for his address.

Roy passed away on June 27, 2023 at the age of 85 years.  Roy was born on March 24, 1938 to Duffen Emerson Cornell and Idella Deveret Leard.  He went to elementary school at Edith Cavell Elementary in Vancouver where he met his lifelong friend Jim Reid.  Roy graduated from King Edward High School in 1956.  He went on to apprentice as a marine machinist and graduated in 1961 with top marks in Canada for his trade.

He began his working career at VM Dafoe’s at the age of 21 and retired there at the age of 73.  Our family would like to thank the Dafoe family for all their support of Roy and allowing him to live out his dream working there.  Roy often said it was not work but that he did something he loved every day there.  One of his proudest moments was being able to learn and begin using a CNC lathe to help automate some of the machining at VM Dafoe.

Roy married his high school sweetheart Shirley Ann Twaites on February 6, 1959 and they had two children:  Bruce Cornell (March 27, 1967) and Laura Cornell (September 3, 1968)

Roy also had a passion for being around sports.  Whether it was Bruce’s hockey, Laura’s swimming or helping ensure all the kids in the community had the opportunity to play, he dedicated his time to coaching, managing, mentoring and supporting youth in the Riley Park Community.

His passion for machining did not stop at VM Dafoe’s.   He had his own small machine shop in the basement and worked evenings helping doctors, inventors and manufacturers prototype and produce products in his tiny machine shop, from one of the first fully automated facial X-ray machines required by dentists, to bobbins for a local company, to small metal parts for electrical contractors and to Aqua Plus Toothbrushes, that small shop helped a lot of people.  He also had an eye for design and spent a lot of time later in life learning AutoCad and moving away from hand drawn blueprints.  If you could imagine it, Roy would find a way to make you a sample of it.

Roy talked fondly of all his lifelong friends from Edith Cavell Elementary and King Edward Secondary, stories of Jim and Zorka were some of his favourite to tell to his children.  He also loved to talk about the amazing people he met and volunteered with at Riley Park, South Van and Grandview Minor Hockey Associations.  All of you held a special place in his heart.  Vancouver was his home and you were part of his family.

Roy spent his final few years in the Shuswap, close to his daughter Laura and her family.  He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and his great grandchild.  He could be seen driving around Sicamous with his beloved companion “Huggs” in the basket in the front of his scooter.

Roy was predeceased by his wife Shirley Ann Cornell.  He is survived by son Bruce (Laura) Cornell, daughter Laura (Fred) Johnston, sister-in-law Claudia Hill and family, grandchildren:  Amanda (Andrew) Tune and Zachary Johnston, Kris (Emma) and James Currie, Andrew Cornell and great granddaughter Alaina Rich.

He is forever remembered for his silly songs, sayings and “ditties.”

Dad you were loved and will be missed every day!

February 8, 1940 – June 27, 2023
at the age of 83 years:

It is with continued sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Sharon Sparling at the age of 83.

Sharon leaves behind her husband of 64 years, Frederick; three children Donald, Traci, and Barbara; 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and numerous family members and friends who all loved her dearly.

Sharon was born in Vancouver.  After completing high school, and while she was employed at Workman’s Compensation, Sharon married her sweetheart Fred.  When their children were young, they moved to Salt Spring Island, where they raised their kids while Fred worked for the BC Ferries.

While raising their children, Sharon owned a small home-based bakery called Fantasy Cakes, she also made numerous crafts which were sold at various craft fairs and worked for a period of time at the local cable office.  She was a true role model with her community involvement which included volunteering as well as being a Brown Owl leader for the Brownies group for many years.

When she wasn’t busy with her family, work, and volunteering, Sharon would be throwing herself into the numerous creative projects she was passionate about. These included knitting, crocheting, cooking, gardening, and creating stunning quilts.

After their kids were grown, Sharon and Fred moved to Salmon Arm where they have lived for over 20 years.  Sharon was actively involved with the local quilt guild as their secretary, general volunteer, and avid quilter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sharon Sparling’s name to the charity of one’s choice.

Throughout the years his love for fishing, being on the water & being in the great outdoors was his most desirable things to do, along with wood working, any kind of carpentry projects, playing pool, racquetball & gathering amongst his people for some true, relaxed down time.

We will keep you alive in our hearts forever. Rest easy amongst calm waters, until we meet again.

If someone should ask me, tell ‘em heaven is
where I’ll be. I’ve finished all my life’s chores &
now I fish on heavens shores.
The view is grand & the fishing’s great, but I yearn
for you as I wait. I’ll save a spot on the river’s
bend, for all those I call family & friend.
But for now, sail out to sea & make a cast in
memory to all the good times you had with me.
Don’t worry or feel sad for me, for I am fishin’
with the master of the sea.
To all those who think of me, be happy as I go to
sea. If others wonder why I’m missin’, just tell ‘em
I’m gone fishin’.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Salmon Arm Ambulance Service, Dr. Kevin Goldberg and the staff at Shuswap Lake General Hospital for their time, care, and compassion.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be sent to Shuswap Lake General Hospital or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Mitchell, David Cyril

April 13, 1940 – June 2, 2023
at the age of 83 years:

Celebration of life will be held Monday, June 19, 2023, 1 – 3 pm, Fischer’s Funeral Services, 4060 1St Ave SW, Salmon Arm, BC

                                                 Still Waters Run Deep

Our quiet patriarch, David Cyril Mitchell, peacefully slipped away with the angels on June 2, 2023, at the age of 83 in Salmon Arm, BC. His unassuming ways taught us radical acceptance throughout his life but especially in the final years, living graciously with Alzheimer’s.

While he still had his faculties he wrote these words for us to read upon his departure: I’m sorry to leave you. Hope we meet again soon. To my wife Sue, you have given me the best years of my life and I love you so much. To my children, don’t let things get you down, it will get better. And to all the rest, I hope I left a good impression. Beside the question, do you have any regrets? He drew a small graphite arrow followed by the words: no change.

Born to David F. Mitchell and Jacquline Mitchell (Young), April 13, 1940, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a descendant of R.J. Uniacke, beloved grandson to Norman and Geraldine (Uniacke) Mitchell.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Susan Mitchell (Sinclair), daughters Carolyn Mitchell (children Chloe Christine Harper and Mitchell David Harper) and Christine Welder (husband Clayton Welder, children Grace Carolyn Welder and Jackson Sinclair Welder),  brother Peter Mowat (partner Annette Dentremont) Wolfville, Nova Scotia, his niece, Kelly Mowat and nephew, Cale Mowat Halifax, Nova Scotia. He also leaves behind countless friends, colleagues and acquaintances from his youth in Eastern Canada and five decades in British Columbia.

Dad was a mystic and philosopher, an inquisitive explorer and a contemplative man of the earth. He was an accomplished geologist, tree fruit farmer and pioneer in the BC wine industry who loved to travel and work hard.  He heartily enjoyed freshly baked cookies and cold beer. His theme song was Bob Seger’s “Like A Rock.”  Those who remember him, mention his 6’1 stature, thick copper hair and mischievous smile. He was happiest outdoors in the African bush, prospecting in the Yukon or surveying his Okanagan properties, often with a pack of loyal dogs trailing behind.

Our family is grateful for the wonderful care Dave received from Harmony Haven in Salmon Arm, BC, Community Care and the care teams at Heron Grove in Vernon, BC and Hillside Village in Salmon Arm, BC, both Good Samaritan Society facilities. A special thanks to Drs. Bonthuys and Levins.

Celebration of life will be held Monday, June 19, 2023, 1 – 3 pm, Fischer’s Funeral Services, 4060 1St Ave SW, Salmon Arm, BC

His strength was being in the water. Gary renewed his PADI licence several years ago and on his last trip to Mexico, he scuba dived a wreck dive with his son and daughter-in-law. On his last trip to Costa Rica in February he was snorkelling and zip lining.

Kenny had a life long passion for all things piano, whether playing and performing or restoring and tuning. He was well known around the Shuswap and beyond to almost everyone who owned a piano requiring any maintenance. A fine musician from childhood, Kenny could be found singing in choirs, playing organ in church, playing recorder in a small group, or simply strumming his guitar.

Kenny’s second passion was building his house, an oval shaped cordwood constructed building he lived in and loved to the end. His happiest times were playing his grand piano on the upper floor of his home.

When Kenny undertook anything he did it whole heartedly. Long standing interests included Toastmasters, lawn bowling, Tai Chi and dance. Kenny’s friendliness and kindness to all touched everyone who knew him.

Many thanks to Shuswap palliative care staff who cared for him in his last months, and to South Shuswap Rides whose services allowed Kenny to stay in his beloved house until the end.

Born May 13, 1921, at Pipestone, MB, she was the 4th child of fourteen. She was predeceased by her first husband Jessey Jones and her second husband Thomas Dale. Fiercely independent, Ivy lived on her own in Vernon, BC up until January of this year, when she moved in with her daughter in Enderby.

She touched everyone who knew her with her easygoing practical ways, her selflessness, dry wit and back slapping hugs!

No funeral by request, instead she asks that each family remembers her by having a picnic.

Ratzliff, Wilhemina “Edna”

Ratzliff, Wilhemina “Edna”

March 19, 1917 – May 9, 2023
at the age of 106 years:

A celebration of Edna Ratliff will be held at Grace Bible Church 5661 Silver Star Rd. Vernon B.C, on June 1, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Committal Salem Cemetery Waldheim SK on June 26, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.

Edna was born on a farm in Elbow, SK to Lorne Abrams and Lena (Miller) Abrams, the third of four children. Her father died shortly before she turned six and although they were poor she had a happy childhood. When Edna was seventeen a travelling evangelist held special meetings in her hometown. He preached John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave His only son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life. “ From then on her highest priority was to live for God and to serve Him wholeheartedly. After high school she attended Millar College in Pambrun SK for three years. It was there that she met her future husband Ed Ratzliff from Waldheim SK and married him after graduating.

Ed and Edna pioneered the Church of the Open Bible in Swift Current Sask. and eventually went as missionaries to Ethiopia with SIM. After the Second World War, the King of Ethiopia welcomed missionaries to start medical clinics and schools to help educate his people and he would then allow freedom of religion. So, with three young children, Bob, Dennis, and Ruth, they headed to the remote and mountainous region of southern Ethiopia. Their fourth child, Eunice, was born four years later in Addis Ababa. They served with SIM for twenty-nine years.

They eventually moved to Vancouver Island and were involved in camp ministry at Camp Qwanoes. They retired in Abbotsford and after Ed’s death in 2006, Edna moved to Vernon B.C. to reside near her daughter Eunice and husband Larry Woelke.

Edna had 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 1 great, great-grandchild, with another to arrive this month. And the legacy goes on.

Edna lived a rich and inspiring life influencing many as a public speaker and teacher. One of her greatest joys during her 80’s and 90’s was teaching women in Bible Studies. Even at the age of 106 she had a keen mind, was a voracious reader and was still walking daily. Edna was an amazing and memorable lady. She was strong minded, spunky, vivacious, classy, and lived out her Christian faith to the very end. She walked into the hospital 19 days prior to her passing and after she was told she had a serious case of pneumonia, she told the doctor, ”I want to go to heaven. I have lived long enough!” When hospice was discussed with her, she said she would like that, but really didn’t know what they did there. The doctor asked, with amusement, “What would you LIKE to do there?” and she answered with enthusiasm, “I would like to read!” In reality, Edna struggled with very poor eyesight, she had difficulty hearing and life was becoming increasingly difficult for her. She remained a blessing to many around her to the very end. She will be missed.

A celebration of Edna Ratliff will be held at Grace Bible Church 5661 Silver Star Rd. Vernon B.C,
on June 1, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Committal Salem Cemetery Waldheim SK on June 26, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.

Wittmann, Erhard

Wittmann, Erhard

March 26, 1929 – April 23, 2023
at the age of 94 years:

Born on March 26th, 1929, in Germany, Erhard lost both parents during wartime.  He then lived with his neighbours which was a difficult time.  As a young adult, he immigrated to Australia.  He built a house and lived there for about 10 years.  The Aboriginals taught him how to create beautiful carvings while there.  These carvings can be seen in the pictures in his room.

He relocated to Canada and moved throughout the North and the Shuswap, building a house in each location.  He worked as a plumber in his earlier years.  His pictures show his log and beam style birch home that he built by himself in St. Ives in 1981.  You can also see the chimney of which he is especially proud!

Erhard lived a very simple life.  In St. Ives, he had a few apple and plum trees and bought his favourite staples at the grocery store:  sausages, chicken, ham, potatoes and onions.  He cooked his meals on his Coleman camp stove with propane tank, and never ate an A & W burger or French fries.  He had a telephone and hot water tank for a short time but got rid of both.  He enjoyed watching the birds through his big living room window.  That was his TV.

Although he used to be a deer hunter (with many antlers to show for it!), he later became a deer lover.  He would feed them cooked carrots, potatoes and apples and follow them up their trail for an outdoor adventure.  “Suzy” was his favourite doe.  He also regularly fed the ravens and chickadees who he found “human friendly.”

He was a good-hearted, shy, sheltered man with a sense of humour.  The locals in St. Ives referred to him as “The Hermit.”  He enjoyed his nearby nature, and tooting on his saxophone, trumpet and clarinet for entertainment, as well as listening to Mexican music on his radio!

He was known for his love of golf, soccer and hunting; he shared his love with his children which lead to him coaching Lindsay’s soccer team and many rounds of golf together.  Billy also had many wonderful and eventful hunting trips with his son Michael filled with memories.  Billy was known to never miss aa hockey/lacrosse or baseball game of his grandsons near or far.  One of Billy’s biggest accomplishments was being a father, his kids Michael and Lindsay always saw their dad as a superhero and as adults will continue to see him that way.  He will be greatly missed beyond words by all who were lucky enough to know him.  He was a loving, caring and characteristic man.  Gone too soon.
