This is the legacy we have from you,
You taught us love and how to fight,
You gave us strength, you gave us might,
A stonger person would be hard to find,
And in your heart, you were always kind.
You fought for us all in one way or another,
Not just as a Wife, not just as a Mother.
For all of us you gave your best,
Now the time has come for you to rest.
So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep,
Your Love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep..

Thank you for letting us know this cowboy
Who has gone to someplace higher.
We will be graced by his presence no longer,
At our campfire.
May he have gone to somewhere greener,
Where the creeks never run dry,
Where rivers flow forever,
And the mountains meet the sky.
Where the horses run in hundreds,
And where fences can’t be seen.
Where tragedy does not exist,
And the oceans are all clean.
Thank you for the memories my friend,
Though it seems life ends too soon.
I know you’ll be watching over us
From the clouds and the hanging moon.

A memorial service will be held at Fisher’s Funeral Services on January 4, 2017 at 2 p.m.
Andy passed away on December 16th, 2016 at Bastion Place, Salmon Arm at the age of 58 years. He was born on January 4th 1958 in Zurich, Switzerland as the son of dairy farmer’s Hans and Marie Zust. He grew up together with his brother Hans on the farm in Bachs, a little town out in the countryside north of Zurich. Six years of Elementary school in Bachs were followed by three years of “Sekundarschule” or High school in Stadel, another small town just a few kilometers away. He did his four-year apprenticeship as a mechanic at Swissair, then still a very reputable airline. During the following years he attended different schools and got several degrees in business administration, accounting, project management as well as information technology and also hotel management.
At the same time he pursued a military career starting with basic training in 1977 in the Swiss army tank force followed by corporal school. Further, he had the chance to attend advanced officer training ending in him being a captain and assistant of the commander of a mixed field division in western Switzerland.
Privately, after plenty of schools and no money left, he married Lisa on June 1st 1985.
Finally, the money situation got better in 1989 after he started being self-employed as a consultant in information technology, business administration, and business organization. He really liked teaching people how to work with certain computers and/or certain software as well as optimizing operation procedures in different companies.
Being busy and having no private life or spare time anymore, he and Lisa opted for a quieter live in Canada with more time for each other. On April 23rd 1998 they arrived in Canada and started a new adventure at the ViewPoint Motel in Salmon Arm. It turned out to be a bigger challenge than expected, as the business was way more run down than previously thought, and the buildings were literally falling apart! Well, that was just another test of his abilities. Roll up the sleeves and get it done! He and Lisa got it done! Years later the ViewPoint Motel not only received fresh paint, but substantial renovations and even new buildings.
The diagnosis of a brain tumor in June 2014 came like a sledgehammer blow to the face! You all know the fast but steady decline of him from there.
Andy will be sadly missed by his wife Lisa, family, and friends.
Special thanks go to Family Doctor Dr. Stacy Kirkman, Bastion Place nurses and staff, and Cancer Clinic Specialist Dr. Gregory Dueck in Kelowna for Andy’s excellent care.
Memorial donations in Andy’s name may be made to Bastion Place, Box 1990,Salmon Arm, BC, V1E 4P9.

With sadness, we share news of the passing of Joan Altwasser (nee Pechey). She slipped away on Saturday December 3. Joan is survived and dearly loved by her husband of 58 years Arthur, children Diane (Mike) and Glen as well as grandchildren Hannah, Trevor and Adam. Joan is also survived by her brother Gordon (Phyllis).
Joan was a passionate quilter and gardener as well as being devoted to supporting the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. The organization works to better the lives of African children, orphaned by AIDS, left in the care of their grandparents.
Joan cherished the time she spent with the area’s many quilters and was a beloved member in the quilting community. She was one of the founders of the Blind Bay Good Time Quilters Group and an active contributor to the Shuswap Quilter’s Guild. Her friends from both groups were a great support and comfort to both Joan and her family through her last days.
Joan’s compassion and strength continues to inspire us. She will be greatly missed.

Domenicos mother, Carmela, Birthed him on January 28, 1943 in a bucket, in a shed, in an olive orchard, during an American air attack near Avellino Italy. Domenico immigrated to Canada alone at 7 years old expected to find a safe home for his mother and 3 sisters. He was never successful at getting his family here, but he did persevere through many unimaginable struggles to find 17 years of happiness and marriage with Jill, his deceased ex wife and mother of his three sons and 7 grandchildren. He is survived by his oldest son Eugene and his four kids Darein, Micayla, Hanah, and Solmon, second son David and his two boys Azlan and Bodhi, and his third son Matthew and his daughter Olympia. Domenico found his happiness and well being in nature, gold panning, telling tall and some part true tales, and Italian cuisine. Nick was fortunate to have spent the last 18 years of his life supported and loved by Anne Billett on his hobby farm on the hillside of Shuswap lake. He conceded to stage four esophageal cancer at 10:30am Saturday, November 19, 2016 surrounded by family. We will all miss his infinite sayings, tales, and wisdom’s. We love you forever and always…

“To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die”
AFTER GLOW (by Helen Lowrie Marshall)
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an after glow of smiles when life is finally done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways.
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun.
Of happy memories that I leave, when life is finally done.
To honour Mary’s wishes, there will be no funeral. Her ashes will be scattered in North Vancouver with her late husband Ralph’s, in the spring.
Contributions to your favorite charity in memory of this special lady would be welcomed.
Special thanks to the staff at Mount Ida Mews in Salmon Arm and Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver, for their care and comfort of this special lady in the past 2 ½ years.

She was our angel here on earth.
The sweetest soul we’ve ever known.
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Dorothy Ada Clegg (nee Kroll) at the age of 87. She is predeceased by husbands Mickey and Ted, beloved son Gregory, brother Norman and sister Violet. She is survived by her brother Arthur, daughters Janice and Denise, granddaughters Christy and Leigh and great-grandchildren Kelsey, Matthew and Dyllan.
Her wishes were to: “Give my sight to a man who has never seen a sunrise. Give my heart to a person whose own has caused endless pain. Give my blood to an injured teen so that he might live to see his grandchildren play. Give my kidneys to one who depends on a machine to exist. Take my bone, every muscle, every fibre and nerve in my body and find a way to make a crippled child walk. Explore ever corner of my brain. Take my cells and let them grow so that someday a boy will shout at the crack of a bat and a deaf girl will hear the sound of rain against her windows.
Burn what is left of me and scatter the ashes to the winds to help the flowers grow.
Give my soul to God.
If you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you.
Our sincere thanks to all the wonderful staff at Hillside Village in Salmon Arm for their many years of love and care.

October 29, 1925 – October 6, 2016
at the age of 90 years
The story of Vins Holbrook’s life is a success story. He lived his life in a manner worthy of emulation. He died on October 7, 2016 at age 90.
Many of his students, friends and colleagues would be surprised to learn he had a difficult childhood and did not do well in school. In 1941 he dropped out of high school, lied about his age (15), joined the US Navy, and thus began a lifelong habit of taking advantage of opportunity. He spent the next 4 years on destroyers in the South Pacific and was aboard the USS Henley DD762 when it was fatefully torpedoed and sunk. His natural intelligence and uncanny memory began to serve him well and he became a signalman.
When the war ended he took advantage of his veterans’ benefits earning his high school diploma and then a B.A. in History/Geography from California State University, Chico in 1949. He married his wife of 62 years, Barbara while still in college in 1948. His lifelong curiosity and habit for learning ended up rewarding him with Master degrees in both Geography (1955) and Education(1964) from the University of Oregon.
He taught social studies and was a counsellor in high school and community college in California for the next 20 years. In the summer of 1968, while visiting a friend in Salmon Arm, he learned about the Community College movement in B.C. and the planned campus of Okanagan College in Salmon Arm. This was exactly what he was looking for! The college was even offering Geography. Again taking advantage of the opportunity, he applied for and got the job and in August 1969 he, his wife Barbara, 4 out of 5 kids, a dog and a horse emigrated to Canada. He lived in Salmon Arm for the rest of his life. Vins was very happy and proud of his adopted country and he and Barb became citizens as soon as they could.
Vins was a wonderful teacher and role model. In spite of a life with plenty of adversity he always kept the positive view. Most of the people reading this will have been fortunate to have been one of his many students, colleagues or friends. He had a very strong social conscience and was always involved with community endeavours, including Elderhostel and the NDP. For a while he was on the Shuswap Lake General Hospital Board of Directors. He really cared about the people he met and always did everything he could to make their lives better. This sounds like a simple platitude, something you’d expect to read in any obituary but in his case it is true. For Vins being a good and useful citizen was a part of being a good person.
Upon retirement, Vins continued to enjoy bird watching, rockhounding, fishing, reading and watching his beloved Toronto Blue Jays.
Vins spent his last years at Lakeside Manor. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara Roach Holbrook in 2010 and survived by his sons and daughters: Michael, Lisa, Sara (Douglas), Jay (Joanne), and Patrick; grandchildren: Tyson, Chace, Chloe and Thea; and great grandchildren: Viah and Quinn.

After Jean and James married in 1942 they lived on their farm near Canoe, BC for nearly 60 years before James’ passing. Once the farm was sold, her grandson Brent built her a home in Enderby, BC.
Jean was predeceased by her husband James, her son Terry (Joyce) and her son Ken (Sharon). Jean enjoyed old-time square dancing with all her friends, golfing—her favourite game she called “Oh S*#!”— and painting. She carried her paintbrush in her back pocket wherever she went, never leaving a surface unpainted.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We take comfort in knowing she is being reunited with her loved ones who have passed before her. We thank all the caring, supportive staff in Cottage 1 who cared for Jean so well in the last three years.
There will be no formal service by Jean’s request. A family gathering will be held in the spring, her favourite time of year when all the flowers start to bloom.

Alicia made the world a better place. Even as a young girl in the 1940’s she raged against racism and injustice and set her life’s path on righting these wrongs. When she was fifteen she went to a party with some black friends. On their way home, the police stopped them and put them in jail simply because they were together. This incident didn’t deter Alicia, but rather inspired her to fight against injustice in the system throughout her life.
Alicia (Diane) Mercurio (Lawrence) was born on Dec. 2 1933 in San Francisco. She was the second child of Earl Joseph Mercurio and Harriette Gertrude Vagg.
At the age of twenty-two, she entered the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet Convent and became Sister Mary Walter C.S.J. and took her vows on Aug. 15 1957. She taught school in Arizona and Los Angeles working with underprivileged children in poor neighborhoods for twelve years.
In February 1967, Alicia left the convent for health reasons and became active in the Vietnam antiwar movement, where she met and married her husband Randy (Clyde) Lawrence in Dec. 1967. In May of 1968, The couple travelled to Calgary in a VW bus because Randy had been drafted. While there she taught adult education to Czech refugees and became active with the Calgary Committee to aid war resisters.
On March 17 1970 she gave birth to her son, Casey. In 1970, she and Randy found and purchased an old homestead in the Shuswap and began making plans to move back to the land. In September 1972 she and her family moved lock stock and barrel into a one room rustic cabin with no running water, hydro or phone.
During this time Alicia worked on a project to divert youths on probation by providing them with a wilderness experience on White Lake. She planted trees for the forest service for 5 seasons. Alicia started a women’s centre in Salmon Arm and sponsored an outreach project focusing on women, youth and First Nations in Salmon Arm.
By 1979, Alica and Randy were separated and she took a job developing an educational program for the Okanagan Indian Band in Vernon taking Casey with her. While in Vernon she became the coordinator of the Okanagan Woman’s Coalition and in 1980 she was elected to a 2 year term representing BC & Yukon for the National Action Committee on the Status of Women. As one of the founding members of the BC Human Rights Coalition, Alicia was offered a job as a human rights officer and moved to Vancouver in 1980. Because of a change in government she lost that job and began working on Solidarity for the BC Federation of Labour.
When Solidarity ended she worked as a fundraiser for Vancouver’s Co-op radio and hosted radio shows focusing on native issues. She volunteered at various prisons taking community elders and members of the native brotherhood to reunite prisoners with their ancestral spirituality. She was on the board of the Canadian Alliance in support of Native People and did support work for Oka (Quebec).
In 1985, Alicia found a job with the Canadian Human Rights Commission and moved to Edmonton with Casey and her beloved dog Sam. In 1987 she began working in an outreach program for Urban Native Education at Matsqui Prison in Mission BC.
In 1989 she took a job at the Carnegie Centre in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside as an educational programmer.
Alicia retired in 1998 but remained active in the community as a Carnegie Centre board member amongst other things. In 2001, Alicia returned to the Shuswap to a lovely house by the lake with her new puppy Chula where she could be near her son and his partner Alex Schon.
Alicia not only spent her life fighting for dignity and well-being of disenfranchised people but was a fiercely loyal and loving friend to way too many to mention. Special Thanks to Nurse Janine, the Salmon Arm hospice and all the care aids who tended to her during her illness and made it possible for her to die at home with her family.
