A private graveside service will be held for the family. All are invited to Irene’s funeral on Monday, July 11, 2022, 2:30pm at the Salmon Arm Recreation Center, 2600 10th Ave North East, Salmon Arm followed by fellowship and refreshments at the same venue.
In loving memory of
Irene Mary McNary (LeRose) who passed away at Piccadilly Park Place in Salmon Arm on Monday, 4 July 2022, aged 91. Irene leaves behind Bill, her loving husband of 69 years. Mother of Joyce (Roger Tregear), Brian (Chris), Warren (LenaMarie), and Wayne (Anita). Grandmother of seven, great grandmother of nine, and great great grandmother of four. Daughter of Rosario and Concetta late of Trail, BC. Irene was the third of four children, Vera, Leonard (deceased), and Elaine.
Irene wrote most of this herself – we have just filled in a few gaps where the story was incomplete.
I was born on April 13, 1931, in the smoky city of Trail, BC. My parents were both born in a tiny village in Southern Italy, and each had emigrated to Canada at a young age. I was the third child in our family: Vera, Leonard (deceased) and Elaine.
I took all my schooling in Trail, graduating in 1949 and then took one year’s teachers’ training at Victoria Normal School. September 1950 found me in the cascade Mountains in a country school. Sheep Creek was a sawmill community and I had 11 students, Grades 1 to 8. From there I went to Paxton Valley in the Kamloops School District to another small group of students. During that time, I met Bill and his brother and family who were logging in the area.
We married in April 1953 and lived at the McNary ranch in Skimikin while I taught part of the year in the Turtle Valley School. We moved to Alberta for a short time in 1954 before moving back to Chase and then Salmon Arm in 1955.
In 1956 I attended a few Gospel Meetings in Armstrong with Jack Price and Warren Wainwright. I chose to become one of God’s Children in His wonderful family. I have never regretted this choice and hope my choice would inspire others. I found out later that I had gone to school both in Trail and Normal School with others who were also part of His family. I also had a favourite teacher who was of the same faith.
For many years Granny and Grandad McNary were living in the same yard as us and I was learning all kinds of handy things and I’m grateful for those teachings.
In 1966 we became dairy farmers. We moved to Silver Creek in 1970 where we built a feed lot and meat business. When the meat plant burned, we moved into Salmon Arm for a few years and worked as railway salvage contractors before we “retired” to White Lake for 10 years and then back into town to be closer to medical support should it become necessary.
We did a lot of travel when we were able – some for work and some for leisure. There was always lots of laughter, company, food, fishing, and camping in the Motorhome.
If Irene was here, I think she would say, “Overall it’s been a good life. There have been some difficult times, for sure, but overall, a great life in a wonderful family.”

With hearts broken into splinters, we, the family of John Benson Casteel announce his passing on 1 July, 2022 in the Marjorie Willoughby Hospice, Kamloops, B. C.
John was born on 28 October, 1942, to Arthur & Grace Casteel in Oakwood, Illinois, USA. He grew up and attended school in Oakwood, Illinois, graduating from high school in 1958. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Southern Illinois, he attended Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, graduating with a Masters in Forest Management. After working in the forests of Norway and Finland for a couple of years, his sense of duty directed him to return to the US, and enlist in the US Navy. He spent 6 years serving his country. Two years in the US Airforce Reserve (ROTC), and 4 years, in the US Navy, including 18 months serving in Vietnam during that conflict. On receiving an honorable discharge in October of 1968, he married Bernice Mogusson, and together they travelled across Canada until he found employment with Lakeland Mills in northern B. C. In 1971, their only child, daughter Diane, was born in Prince George, B. C.
In early 1989, he found himself alone again, and in the fall of 1991, he married his soul mate Bernice E. Atherton (nee Johnson). After their retirement in 2002, they moved to Chase where John enjoyed his large garden, happy to give produce to his family, neighbors, friends, church family, and anyone who needed it. John & Bernice travelled extensively to Australia, England, Norway, Hawaii, the midwestern United States, eastern Canada, and Cuba. They spent 14 winters at their park model home in Sun Vista Resort, Yuma, Arizona, where John served as head usher at the community church in the park for several winters, led the Investment Club, and enjoyed his nightly bike ride around the park.
A quiet person by nature, yet John loved to discuss politics, economics, philosophy, philanthropy, and the stock market with anyone he met. He had a very strong faith, and read his Bible every morning with out fail. At the time of his passing, he had served as Chairman of the Board of the E. Free Church in Chase.
He was predeceased by his parents, and survived by his loving wife, Bernice, daughter Diane Casteel; step-children Todd Atherton, Betty-Ann Atherton (Carlo Rossetti), grandson Brandon Atherton (Jill Maisonneuve), an expected great-granddaughter in early October and nephews Blair and Ripley Martin. Also survived by his Johnson in-laws: Jim Johnson (Elaine), Doug Johnson (Shirley) and Chelsea Braaten (Vern); as well as his Casteel and Arnold cousins in Illinois, Colorado, and Florida in the USA, He will be sorely missed by all of us.
A Celebration of Life will be held on 16 July, 2022, at the Evangelical Free Church, Chase, B. C. at 2:00pm with the Rev. Tyler J. R. Harper officiating.
We would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. S. Swart, and his nurse, Dominique, Dr. De Villiers, the Chase Palliative Care nurses Shanoa, Kamilla, Sara, and Laura, and the caring staff at the Marjorie Willoughby Hospice…you have all supported for us through this painful journey, and we appreciate your efforts.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the B. C. Cancer Society, or the Marjorie Willoughby Hospice in Kamloops would be very appreciated.

March 13, 1924 – June 22, 2022
at the age of 98 years:
With heavy hearts and no small measure of disbelief, we say goodbye to our beloved mother, Frances ‘Shirley’ Lyall. We thought she would live forever, and she almost did.
Shirley was born in 1924 in the little town of Birtle, Manitoba, travelling home from the hospital on a blustery March day by horse and buggy. She carved out her youth on the windswept prairies, the years ravaged first by a great depression and then a great war. And yet, raised on hardship and making do, she remembered her childhood as an endless horizon of magical things. There were hay rides, sledding, curling and ice skating in the bitter Manitoba winters; horseback riding, hiking, swimming and evading clouds of horse flies in the summers. It was a wonderland.
The reverence she paid to the beauty and imperfection of the everyday would sustain her throughout her life. As a young woman, she stole the hearts of many suitors before marrying Lundie, a man 17 years her senior. Two daughters, Jennifer and Belinda, followed soon after. Lundie’s work took the family across Canada and the U.S. before retiring on 23 acres in Salmon Arm’s Gleneden.
Shirley filled her life with all that she loved: painting, writing, walking, British dramas, animals, the natural world, old furniture and old dogs. She played tennis and her piano, devoured books, art, classical music, news, philosophy, politics and chocolate. She was enthralled with medicine and spent decades working in medical clinics. She knit, crocheted, sewed and quilted. She fed the birds. She skied. She nurtured her friends, mothered her daughters and helped found the Salmon Arm Tennis Club. She was a gentle soul who drew people in with her wisdom, strength, kindness and common sense.
After Lundie’s death in 2001, Shirley left her oasis in Gleneden and moved into a bungalow in town. It was a hard turn. But home was everything to her, and in time she grew to love this one, too. As years passed, she refused to accept the confines of aging, often to the exasperation of those who loved her. She balked at getting a hearing aide. She insisted on doing her own shopping. And she still dreamed of getting a puppy. Losing her driver’s license at 95 was an affront she never got over.
Fiercely independent and intensely private, Shirley pushed through the last years of her life with sheer physical determination. She lived in her own home, shoveling her own snow and picking her own raspberries, surrounded by her art and her antiques, until three days before she died. In the end, she left peacefully, flying straight into the sun just before noon on a bright Wednesday morning. We will miss her beyond words.
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Jennifer and Belinda, her adored granddaughter, Reja Malysh, her nephew, Peter Clarke (Fran) and her foster cat, Marty. A special thank you to Dr. Chris Weicker, the Salmon Arm Palliative Care Program and the doctors and nurses at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital for their caring and compassion. There is no service by request, but if desired, a donation to the BC SPCA in Shirley’s memory to help a stray dog or cat would make her happy.

Peter Ereth Home Purves was born on June 2nd, 1936, in Lismore, N.S.W, Australia. He was the youngest child of Major William Purves and Robena Purves. He had a joyful childhood growing up with his sister ‘Billie’ in Australia, spending much time at the beach and in the surf. He attended an agricultural boarding school and then did his teacher’s training at Sydney Teacher’s College. After teaching for three years in Newcastle, Peter travelled to Canada and ended up teaching in Merritt, BC. It was there that he met Marie-Annette Boulanger. It was love at first sight.
They married in 1961 and began their new life together back in Australia. During their three years in New South Wales they had two children, Allan and Joanne. They returned to Merritt, where Peter was a favourite teacher and coach at the local high school. Their third child, Susan was born in Merritt and then the family moved to Salmon Arm in 1967, where John was born.
Peter continued his career in education for another 28 years, working in secondary and elementary schools, in special education, and in administration. Peter and Marie-Annette fostered children and adopted one, a six year old boy named Randy in 1978. Peter chose to be baptized in the Catholic Church when he was 39 years old. He proudly served St. Joseph’s Parish as a reader, a Confirmation teacher, a member of the Parish Council, and he helped with Bastian Place Communion service.
Peter had a profound love for his wife and his family. His interests were varied and deep, extending beyond not only children and teaching, but to sport, music, reading, dancing, poetry (both reading and writing it), and gardening. He achieved the completion of an Ironman Triathlon at age 66. He served God and his neighbours in a multitude of ways, such as coaching Masters Swim Club, teaching a blind friend to ride a tandem bike, and taking his adoring grandchildren camping.
He is survived by Marie-Annette, his beloved wife of 60 years, by his only sibling and dear sister Willena “Billie” Keegan of Toowoon Bay, NSW, and by his children: Allan and his wife Sandra, Joanne, Susan and her husband Marcel, John and his wife Liz, and Randy. As well, he is survived by 15 grandchildren (two of whom are named after him), and 13 great-grandchildren (the youngest of whom is also named after him) and numerous nephews and nieces, both in Australia and Canada. After a brief illness, Peter died on June 3rd, 2022, the day after his 86th birthday. His quiet confidence, teasing humour, and attentiveness to those around him will be dearly missed. His funeral will be held at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salmon Arm, BC on Monday June 13th at 9:00am.

At 45 years of age, he sold the farm and business to move his family to Sorrento BC, where he enjoyed the outdoors hunting and fishing, selling real estate, logging, gardening, playing ball, travelling, and making bread and preserves.

at the age of 80 years:
This week the Jespersen family said goodbye to a great a man. Egon Marius Jespersen passed away on June 1st, 2022, at the age of 80 years. Egon was born on April 26th, 1942, in Fyn, Denmark, the second of three children to Christian and Clara Jespersen. At the age of 11 he immigrated to Canada with his family, travelling by sea to Halifax and by train to Salmon Arm. Shortly after their arrival his parents bought the acreage on which Egon lived throughout his life.
In the family tradition he worked hard, as a boy picking apples, raising family pigs, tending mushrooms and for many years growing strawberries. He was instrumental in transitioning the Jespersen Solvang strawberry farm to Christmas trees. In 1968, he founded Jespersen Drywall which, along with the Christmas tree farm, continues to be a vibrant family business in the Salmon Arm landscape. His hard working life added much to the community.
Hunting was a passion which he passed on to his children. His happiest times were spent with them in the wilderness. He was always the first to volunteer to take visitors for a drive and show them the country he loved so much. Egon always had a story to share. He was a generous friend and contributed his time over the years to many local community and fundraising events.
He was a business owner, farmer, avid hunter, and loving father, husband, grandpa, and friend, and known to many as Chief. Egon is survived by; his wife Sally, children Kris (Monja), Ed (Robyn) and Ashley (Devin), seven grandchildren; Klaire, Dax, Ryker, Boden, Marek, Call and Atlin; his sister Tove, brother Jesper and several cousins in Canada and Denmark.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salmon Arm Fish and Game Club. Those wishing to celebrate Egon’s life and share a story or memory are invited to visit the family’s We Remember page.https://www.weremember.com/egon-marius-jespersen/6t6h/memories?utm_campaign=memorial_share
He will be missed by many.

There will be a graveside service in Penticton in June 2022, date to be determined.
Yvonne Murray passed away at the age of 92 in Bastion Place, Salmon Arm BC on June 1st, 2022.
Yvonne was born in Mazeond Saskatchewan on June 23, 1929.
Predeceasing Yvonne is her husband Kenneth Murray, son Clifford Murray, great granddaughter Angeline Selluski and siblings Frank, Mary, Helen, Louis, Roger, Marcel, Raymond, and Paul.
Survived by daughter, Karen Murray, Grandson Doug Simister wife Angie great grandchildren Davin and Jordyn. Granddaughter Brandy Selluski, husband Roger great granddaughters, Erlina, Tynisha, Narissa and Jocelin. Grandson Mark Mackay and partner Nichole.
Yvonne grew up on the family farm in Mazenod, Saskatchewan. When her father passed away when she was 12 years old, Yvonne and her siblings had to step up in order for her family to survive, this is where she developed her strong work ethic and many stories of her favourite “pet”, Rosie the cow. As a young woman she moved to the big city of Regina with her sister Helen and brother Lois and is where she met her husband, Ken. Her wedding was the best day of her life marrying her best friend. They soon moved out to Vancouver for 10 years where the weather was much warmer and had 2 children Clifford and Karen, who were the apple of her eye. From there they moved to Revelstoke when the Rogers Pass first opened in 1963 and had the first gas station on the highway in Revelstoke.
An opportunity came up in Penticton and that is where Yvonne and Ken settled for many years of happiness. After retirement, and years after her husband Ken passed away, she moved to Chase BC with her daughter for a few years. In Chase is where she had been diagnosed with the horrid disease “Dementia” and started to quickly deteriorate. She soon ended up in a care facility in Salmon Arm BC.
Yvonne always had an eye for fashion and worked in the fashion industry most of her life. Eaton’s, Sears, Lila’s Ladies Wear and Woodward’s as well as keeping the books for the businesses her and Ken owned.
Yvonne always had a love for clean clothes! If she wasn’t working helping Ken with carpentry work (in high heals) or camping she was doing laundry. She loved washing and ironing clothes, or it sure seemed she loved it. She was always offering to do her adult children’s laundry and soon the grandkids laundry as they became adults too. There was nothing she couldn’t get a stain out of.
Yvonne was always the life of the party, her amazing personality drew people in, and family and friends loved being around her.
Yvonne always had kept a close relationship with all her 8 brother and sisters. She had a special bond with Helen and Louis having been room mates in Regina. Yvonne’s youngest brother Paul lived with her and her family on and off for most of his life.
Yvonne was a storyteller! Who needed a book to read when she was around? She told stories of her time on the family farm, stories of her dad’s days in the navy, and all her adventures in life which were many!
Yvonne loved having tea parties with her grandchildren Brandy, Doug and Mark and continued tea parties with her great grandkids. She spent as much time as she could with her grandkids and great grandkid’s. She had a very deep love for all of them.
She said she would never grow old and when you mentioned that she was a senior she would get quite indignant. She was a forward thinker, very young at heart and was loved by everyone she met.
The family would like to thank the wonderful Staff at Bastion Place for the excellent care she had.
There will be a graveside service in Penticton in June 2022, date to be determined.

Jenny was a long-time resident of Salmon Arm and known as Ziggy from her school bus driver days. Jenny loved playing softball and spending time with her family from far and wide. She wasn’t big on traveling but did venture to the Ukraine to visit family and traveled across Canada with her best friend Alice. Mom loved to bake and you could always count on some kind of sweets when at their house. She loved her flowers/flower beds and thanks to her many friends/neighbors she was able to enjoy them even after not being able to look after them herself.
A big thanks to the Continue Care team for the last three years of coming into their home and caring for her.
By request, no formal service will be held.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gerald Frederick Flucke on May 18th, 2022 at the age of 87. Gerry was predeceased by his wife Kathleen and survived by his daughters Kim of Quesnel, Kelly of Vernon, and his son Bryan of Salmon Arm. He will forever be in our hearts.
Although we all wish for just one more moment together with this wonderful man; let it be known that Gerry had the amazing good fortune to be doing what he enjoyed right up until his passing.
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on the snow.
I am the sunlight on the ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumns rain.
When you waken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush,
Of the quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.
Gerry was born in Victoria, BC on March 3rd, 1935 to Archibald Frederick and Edith Margaret Flucke. With his father away in England during WWII, a lot of Gerry’s childhood was spent in the company of his wonderful extended family of many aunts, uncles and cousins.
After high school Gerry joined the Air Force where he completed training as a Meteorological Observer. Not sure if it was his plan, but this was just the beginning of a lifelong adventure in the field of meteorology and weather related disciplines. From conducting weather observations at the remote Ocean Station PAPA, to providing sea ice and weather information in Canada’s Arctic, to assisting the BC Ministry of Forests with weather forecasts during wildfire season; Gerry always carried out his duties to the highest possible standards.
Gerry’s dedication to doing everything to the best of his abilities was also present outside his professional life. Gerry was a proud and contributing member of many organisations throughout his life. Such organisations included the Lions Club of Winchester Ontario, Circle V Flying Club of Winchester Ontario, Salmon Arm Flying Club, The Canadian Kennel and Canadian Samoyed Clubs, as well as numerous associations and groups related to the Llama and Alpaca industries.
Everyone who knew Gerry will agree that we have lost a remarkable man; he is missed immensely. We thank him for giving so much of himself and blessing us all with so many wonderful memories.
A celebration of life will be held later this summer; all who knew him are invited to join. A private family interment will be held at Shuswap Memorial Cemetery.

In Loving Memory of Raymond Robert Moser, we are saddened to announce his passing on April 15, 2022 at the age of 85 in Kelowna, BC.
Bob started his work life with Royal Canadian Navy in 1953 and was honourably discharged to join his young family late 1960. He was very proud of that time and spoke of it often. Civilian employment included Dairyland and the then, Alberta Wheat Pool where he was aptly nicknamed “Boots” by work friends and was employed for a number of years. In the 1970s Bob got involved in the propane industry with a friend of his and continued on in this field in different capacities and locations all over Western Canada, including the Sunshine Coast, Brooks AB, Hay River, NWT respectively. Kamloops was where he finally left the propane industry and got into apartment complex management thru to age 65. He moved to Kelowna, BC sixteen years later.
Bob made friends everywhere and will always be remembered as the man with a good heart, big friendly smile and cheerful, welcoming demeanour. Not often idle, he’d be busy fixing or working on something. He also loved to be outdoors camping and/or fishing whenever he got the chance.
A heartfelt thank you to all the medical staff and volunteers that assisted in Bob’s comfort and wellbeing up until he passed peacefully.
The interment will be at 1 pm at the Maple Ridge Cemetery, on Friday, August 19, 2022. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held the following afternoon at James and Olivia Moser’s home in Surrey, BC.
Please feel free to leave any messages and/or memories below if you wish.

at the age of 69 years:
Celebration of Life: Saturday, May 28, 2022, 1pm – 2251 40 Street SE, Salmon Arm, BC
Layne’s life journey began on October 29, 1952 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan and ended much too soon, on “Not-So-Good-Friday” April 15, 2022. He was the second son of Maurice and Ida Letourneau, and a brother to Wayne. He was predeceased by his mother in 1990 and father in 2008. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Billie, son, Chris, daughter Lisa (Mike), and son Mike, grandchildren, Mackenzie, Grace and Gabe, brother Wayne (Eileen) niece Jane and nephew Todd.
You can take the boy from the farm, but you can’t take the farmer from the boy. Layne, literally never wanted to leave to the farm. That was evident, on the first day of school when he threw his lunch box down on the ground, to protest having to get on the bus. Even at the age of ten, when the family moved to BC, he had developed a desire to be a farmer. The ability to maintain/repair farm implements/equipment, is an essential element for a successful farming operation. Layne had that in “spades”. The list of his abilities in that regard was endless.
At an early age Layne also developed a love of cars, especially Dodge muscle cars. At the age of 19 one of his first cars was a 68′ Charger 440, with a Racer Brown cam and hooker headers. His next car was a 72′ Charger, 440-4 speed, he really loved this car and mentioned many times over the years he wished that he had never sold it. Then came a 70′ Challenger R/T, this was a pretty spectacular car with all the metal flake and pin stripping done on it. He showed this car at many car shows and won many trophies with it. In the off-season Layne also loved to race his Artic Cat 440 snowmobile. Friday nights after work he would load his snowmobile up, pick Billie up and off they’d go. Some of the places were; Kaslo, Nelson, Clearwater, Revelstoke, Prince George and Vernon. He won a few trophies along the way but for Layne, it was the speed that he loved the most.
In the early 70’s the Shuswap Quarter Milers car club was formed. Layne enjoyed helping out at all of the events, especially at the Shuswap Quarter Milers Incline Raceway, these races were held out in the industrial park, between 1979 to 1984. With his mechanical knowledge of cars, he built his own race car, it was a 68′ Dodge Dart with a 426 Hemi called the Adult Toy. Many nights after work and on the weekends, he would be working on his car with his oldest son Chris at his side learning the tricks of the trade. Anyone that knows Chris, now knows where he got his mechanical knowledge and passion for Dodge muscle cars. Many weekends he’d load up the car and we would be off to the races in Spokane with other members of the car club. Some weekends it was just the kids and we’d be off to the races. When the car club came to an end, Layne got to do the next thing on his bucket list and that was to be a farmer once again.
In 1998 he and Billie bought acreage and built a house to the same dimensions as the original Saskatchewan farmhouse. He also built a barn, hay/equipment shed and a fully equipped shop with a hoist on one side and wood working shop on the other. Of course, when you have a farm, you need a brand-new John Deere tractor to round out the farming experience. There they raised a garden, beef cattle and several donkey foals from their beloved Ellie Mae and Jake. Layne also loved his dogs, having several in his life, some of his favorites were Queen, Spot, Coco, Chester, Belle and Waylon. For him it wasn’t a home without a dog in it.
Layne was a person of strong likes. They included; Billie, she has to be in first place, his children and grandchildren, Dodge/Ram vehicles, bourbon, (when asked for his favorite brand; his stock reply was that he was still working on the list). He liked a cold beer (MGD) in the summer, farm raised beef, John Wayne and John Deere tractors.
Layne started his mechanical apprentice with Braby and Davidson Motors Ltd in 1972, he worked with them a few years and then left to try out a few different careers over the last 40 some years. His last job that he had, was a parts representative with Braby Motors, and he loved it, he truly came full circle. I’m sure he is up there riding his tractor or maybe in one of his many muscle cars, with his loving dogs at his side.
The family would like to thank Dr. Willms for the care and compassion she has shown Layne over these last few years and the Doctors and nurses at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital for their dedication to him. The family would also like to thank Vince Fischer for the care and thoughtfulness he has given to us at this time of sorrow.
Layne: a brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, you will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Her Journey’s Just Begun
Don’t think of her as gone away,
her journey’s just begun,
Life holds so many facets,
this earth is only one,
Just think of her as resting,
from the sorrows and the tears,
In a place of warmth and comfort,
where there are no days or years,
Think how she must be wishing,
that we could know today,
How nothing but our sadness,
can really pass away,
And think of her as living,
in the hearts of those she touched,
For nothing loved is ever lost,
and she was loved so much.
Darlene passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 12 after a lengthy cancer illness. Darlene is survived by her two daughters Kim and Marni Gibbon; her beloved grandson William Mills; 1 sister Doreen (Gary) Whaling; 2 brothers Dave (Tracey) Millar; and Brian Millar ; 1 sister in law Ann Millar, as well as several nieces and nephews and extended family. Darlene was predeceased by her brother Ron as well as her loving husband of 45 years Thomas Gribbon in 2016.
Darlene came into the world behind her twin brother on October 27th 1948, and was the fourth in a family of five children born to Edith and John Millar. She spent her formative years living on the family acreage and it was there that Darlene developed her love of growing things and making the spaces around her beautiful. Darlene started working at a young age and continued to enjoy the relationships she made through work her entire life. Once she graduated from high school Darlene moved to Calgary and met her husband, Tom Gribbon and together they built an incredible life. Tom was an iron worker and they living all over British Columbia. While on a houseboat trip in 1998 they found a beautiful piece of property overlooking the lake. They build their retirement home and moved into it a short time later. Darlene got a transfer from Surrey to the Sorrento Pharmasave so she could continue working part-time. She loved her job at the dugstore, as well as the people she worked with and for. Darlene and Tom developed several close friendships with their neighbors in Blind Bay and hosted many spirited card games throughout the years. Darlene’s yard was breathtakingly. She had a talent for growing even the most challenging plants and took such pride in the way the yard came alive.
Darlene’s family would like to send a special thanks to her friends who were so supportive to her through her illness especially Val, Nancy, Murray and Joan. There are other incredible friends too numerous to mention but the love she shared was most certainly returned to her through so many of you. At Darlene’s request there will not be a service. Please consider planting something beautiful in her honor.

JoAnne Marjorie Groves departed this life on April 11, 2022. Born in Toronto on September 3rd, 1939, daughter of Charlotte and Bernard Groves (predeceased), she grew up in Toronto and then north of Orillia, Ontario.
Missed by her partner Jack Lewis, Celista, BC, her daughters Heather Dix, Orillia, ON and Melissa (Norm) Hodges, Vancouver, BC, sister Joy Robinson (Rob predeceased), Victoria, BC, brother John Groves (predeceased), grandchildren Jessica (Gavin), Caitlin (Jeff) and Nathan, Nicola, John, Charlie and Elliot and great-grandchildren Hartley, Quinlan, Fallon and Eady. Her beloved dog Lucy and her many friends, neighbours and colleagues too numerous to mention, all who brought her joy and regularly gathered at their home on many occasions.
Equal parts feisty, funny, stubborn and smart, Jo was always her own person, pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. After attending Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto, she was an educator, teaching in northern Manitoba, what is now Nunavut and Ontario and eventually, after moving back to Vancouver and earning her B.Ed at the University of British Columbia, taught ESL in Vancouver’s downtown east side and finally at her home of the last 30 years in Celista, BC. Music was an integral part of her life, singing in the choir as a child to performing and directing school and local choirs and barbershop quartets., performing in and directing the Anglebay Entertainers bi-annual Pig and Whistle. She was an active member of Saint David’s Church and the Lakeview Community Centre.
Life wasn’t always easy but she persevered and as a rule kept a positive attitude, never forgetting to laugh and enjoy life. Dancing with Jack brought her joy and it wasn’t unusual for them to drive all over western Canada with friends to attend old time dances. Along the way, she had two girls that she loved fiercely and unconditionally. When her first grandchild was born, she declared she was too young to be a grandma so she was Nana Jo to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the North Shuswap community for their love and support. Cremation has taken place and a celebration “Singing with Jo” will be held on May 29, 2022 from 1pm to 4pm at the Lakeview Community Centre in Anglemont.

It is with great sadness and fond memories that we announce the passing of Lawrence Joseph Filiatrault at 86 years of age at Shuswap Lake General Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Lawrence was born in Maillardville to Leo and Mary Rose Filiatrault. The family moved to Quesnel where Lawrence spent his formative years and started school. He also lived with his older sister in Nelson, BC where he finished his schooling. At age 16 he returned to Quesnel and worked at a variety of odd jobs until he went to work at the Cariboo Farmers Co-op that launched him into a 12 year career in the Dairy industry, He attended the Agriculture School at UBC to study and earned his Pasteurizing ticket. He worked in a number of areas of the Dairy Field before moving to Salmon Arm in 1963, where he operated 3 businesses over the next 50 years. He opened the first business with his father – L & L Motors. He was one of the first 4 Datsun Dealers in Canada and enjoyed that business for a number of years. He and his wife Margaret opened and ran Fili’s Deli for a few years, and when that business sold, he started Frames by Filiatrault which he ran until he retired at age 75.
Lawrence belonged to two service clubs and was an alderman in the Village of Salmon Arm for two years. When the Village and District amalgamated, he decided not to run for Council again as he wanted to spend more time with his growing family. Lawrence met and courted his wife in Quesnel. They married in 1959 in Vancouver. Their two sons were born in Vancouver in 1961 and 1963; and the third child – a daughter was born in Salmon Arm in 1967. The family spent their leisure time camping and fishing all over the province for a number of years; having many wonderful adventures and experiences. They also had a memorable trip camping and travelling in Mexico. Lawrence was also known as a skilled ‘fly fisherman’.
Lawrence was bitten by the travel bug when he travelled to Japan in 1969 as a guest of the Datsun Motor Company. He and Margaret travelled to Hawaii a few years later on a trip organized by Bob Hall of the Big R., but had to wait for further extended travel while business took precedence. They did travel back and forth to Japan to visit their sons and families during those years. In 1994 they took a year off and spent time in Japan, other South Asian countries, and the UK, and travelled Continental Europe by car. Other travel included trips across Canada and around the province.
Lawrence was proud to be a Canadian, loved Salmon Arm and cherished his family. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother Bert. Left to grieve are his beloved wife Margaret of 62 years, and his children, Christopher of Vancouver BC, Stephen of Japan and Michelle of Cherryville, BC: eight grandchildren – Norio, Tyler, Eugene and Sarah of Japan, Emily, Elisha and Davis of Lumby and Enderby., Leo of Sorrento and three great grandchildren, his two beloved sisters – Lorraine and Leota (Lee) Salmon Arm, BC, sister-in-law Norma, Aldergrove, and their children. Lawrence was close to many members of his extended family; fondly remembering his nieces, and was especially grateful to his nephews who were helpful over the years, and during his months in the hospital.
Lawrence was thankful for and appreciated the many nurses, doctors and specialists who cared for him in the hospital. He also appreciated his personal physician Dr. Weicker who cared for him for a number of years.
A private family Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
March 25, 1931 – April 5, 2022
at the age of 91 years:
Shirley Jean Halverson passed away peacefully at Shuswap Lake General Hospital on April 05, 2022, at the age of 91. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Gordon Halverson and is survived by her son Bruce (Shelly) Halverson, daughters Lisa (Ben) Honcoop, Gayle (Chris) Johnson, her much loved grandchildren & great grandchildren, and by her brother, George Healy of Langley, her nieces & nephews, as well as dear friends Barry & Sally Tarr.
Shirley was born in Burnaby March 25, 1931, where she lived until her & Gordon moved to Salmon Arm in 1973. Prior to having children Shirley worked at Woodards Dept. store in Vancouver, then stayed home to raise her 3 children, other than part time work for the North Burnaby Credit Union. She then worked at Ben’s Towing in Salmon Arm for a few years.
Mom & Dad fell in love with Salmon Arm after camping here for many years which prompted their move here. They were seasonals at Sandy Point for over 25 years and loved to host many happy hours on their deck, with mom always putting out snacks of cookies, peanuts and chips. Shirley was affectionately known as Mom, Grandma and Gigi to many extra people in her life. There was a steady stream of extra “grandchildren” at her trailer door where they knew they would find treats of popsicles and/or cookies. In the past Shirley loved to go bowling and was on a ladies league for several years. She loved to play crib and did so with Gordon at crib nights at the legion. During her stay at Andover Terrace, Shirley renewed her love of crib and was often found at the crib table. Shirley will be fondly remembered for her homemade cookies and jam and her very popular knitted slippers. Her cookie jars were always full! Her kids and grandkids all loved stopping by to be spoiled by “grannie”. She would pretend to be mad and shake her finger at them for too many cookies, which never worked. She had a wicked sense of humor right to the end, if you got the finger pointed at you…. well, you knew the queen bee had spoken. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother (grannie) and Gigi to all of us who would do anything for her family. She will be missed very much.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Heunis for his friendship and fantastic care to Shirley. A huge thank you as well to the nursing staff at SLGH who although most of the time were working short staffed and run off their feet, still maintained caring for Shirley with kindness and compassion. Special thanks also to Leanne and Yeiko.
A Celebration of life will be held at a later date.

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Donald McVicar (Mac) Esselmont on April 4, 2022 at 82 years old in Salmon Arm, BC.
Born on April 27, 1939 in Stewart, BC he was well known for his fun loving spirit, wit, quick laughter and lifelong love of golf.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff and care givers at both Arbour Lodge and Mt. Ida Mews.

It’s with immense heartbreak that we announce the passing of a most exceptional woman of the Shuswap. Bunny is preceded by her parents John, Edith Whitehead and brother Ernest. Survived by brothers Joe, Jack, Carl and Kahn.
Bunny is well known in her community as a generous and unstoppable caregiver, living her life in dedication to her family and friends. She was the heart of the community and her home on the lake was the gathering place. Those who were fortunate enough to be present with family and friends on her deck overlooking the lake will cherish the memories and light hearted exchanges of stories of the Shuswap. All was welcome at Bunny’s for a delicious home cooked meal that generally broke out into a rowdy card game lasting well into the evening. We will all miss you.
July 17, 1930 – April 2, 2022
at the age of 91 years:
Dorothy (affectionately known to family and friends as Doffy) was born in Ixopo, Natal, South Africa to her parents Frank and Ada Martin. The beloved memories of her childhood on the farm lasted to Doffy’s final days and inspired her lifelong love of animals and nature. Tragically, her father passed away before Doffy was seven, and she and her mother moved to the nearby town where she was able to attend school while her brother Denis took over running the farm. Her elder brother Nigel was killed in the war in 1944 and this affected her deeply.
Doffy attended boarding school and then Teachers’ College before heading off to teach school in the little village of Gingindlovu, and it was there she met her husband-to-be, Dennis Mohle. The primary grades were her favourite, and the years of teaching little ones created such happy memories.
Doffy and Dennis were married in 1954. In the following years, they had two children, Nigel and Jennifer. They provided a welcoming home to many family members and friends, some for whom Doffy became a beloved foster mother.
Dennis, Doffy, Nigel and Jennifer moved to Canada for the first time in 1968, settling in the town of Powell River BC, where Doffy taught at a local elementary school. Missing family and friends, they returned to South Africa in 1970 until the lure of life in Canada called them back, returning in 1977 to settle in Kamloops, BC. Although she no longer taught in school, Doffy spent many years giving piano and organ lessons, volunteering at the neighbourhood schools and the church thrift store plus helping with the Shopping for Seniors program. The Mohles connected with other ex-South Africans in Kamloops, and they formed a new family of friends, gathering frequently for holidays, celebrations, and vacations. Auntie Doffy happily provided music and favourite foods at these events.
In 2008 Doffy and Dennis moved to Salmon Arm to be closer to family. Doffy put her volunteer hat on once again, assisting in the shopping program through the Seniors Resource Centre.
Doffy dearly loved her grandchildren and great-granddaughter, and she treasured days when family came to visit. Special baked goods, gardening, and knitting projects were among her hobbies.
The past several years presented increasing health challenges for Doffy, and the last year saw her separated from Dennis as she spent significant time in hospital before moving to her final residence at Piccadilly Care Centre. The family would like to thank the wonderful care teams who were so kind to Doffy while in their care.
Doffy was a special lady who was very loved and will be missed by many. She has a special place in the hearts of her husband Dennis, son Nigel (Leahann) and daughter Jennifer (Bill), her grandchildren Jordan (Alex), Taegan (Dane), Ashley (Jacob), and Brent, and her great-granddaughter Kate. Her nieces, nephews and many friends will remember her love and kindness.
Doffy didn’t “want a fuss” when she passed, so there will be no service, but condolences and memories to be shared with the family may be sent via www.fischersfuneralservices.com

A service will be held on Saturday May 7, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Anglican Church, 170 Shuswap St. SE, Salmon Arm, followed by a tea and time to share your “Al” stories. The community is welcome!
Al Neale died in Salmon Arm after two days in hospital. He leaves a wide circle of friends, family and community who will both miss him and feel lucky that he touched their lives. He was a gentleman above all: kind, compassionate, generous, humble and social. Many of us will remember his great sense of humour and quick wit.
Al’s long, and well-lived, life began on March 25, 1925, when he was born to parents George and Betty Neale in Lethbridge AB. In 1954, he married Elizabeth (Beth) Hillier-Holt. They and their two children, Lisa and David, lived in Calgary where Al worked at various jobs. Al’s beloved wife, Beth, died in 1969 at age 41, leaving Al as a single parent of their young children.
In 1976, Al bought his home in Sorrento and became part of the community. He was an active volunteer and donor to many causes, including the Shuswap Branch of the BCSPC and the Shuswap Community Foundation. It was through volunteering that Al met, and fell in love with, his “dearling”, Beryl Herdan. They spent two decades together, traveling, dancing, volunteering, socializing and caring for each other. Sadly, Beryl passed away at home in February 2021 and Al’s life changed again. With his characteristic positive attitude, Al moved into Andover Terrace in August 2021 where he became a part of a warm and caring community.
Al was predeceased by his son, David (2011). He is survived by his daughter Lisa and her son Cody and David’s wife, Lorry, and their children Camron, Casey, Trinity, and Chelsea as well as great-grandchildren. Al will be missed by Beryl’s children: son Greg (Laura) Peterson and their children Justin, Nathan, and Katelyn; daughter Linda (Brian) Wallace and their son, Geoff; and daughter Pamela Davies and her children, Graham and Megan, and their families.
A service will be held on Saturday May 7, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Anglican Church, 170 Shuswap St. SE, Salmon Arm, followed by a tea and time to share your “Al” stories. The community is welcome!
Memorial donations may be made in Al’s memory either to the charity of your choice, or to the Shuswap Community Foundation (Shuswap Branch BCSPCA Fund) shuswapfoundation.ca

A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, March 12, at 2:00 pm at the River of Life Church 2405 Centennial Drive, Blind Bay B.C. (Shuswap Lake Estates building)
Please note: change from Sunday
On February 24, 2022, John Froese of Chase B.C. completed his journey and went to his final destination to be with his savior whom he loved and served.
John was born on April 13, 1943 in Vanderhoof BC, he was the youngest of 10 siblings born to Abe and Suzanna Froese. With a household of that size, a couple of skills that John had to learn in order to survive and thrive were to talk and care. And thrive he did! John used these skills throughout his life in the many business and sales positions in which he worked. More importantly to John though, he used those skills to encourage, build into the lives of those he came in contact with, from his fellow workers to the foster children they took in, to the employees who worked for him and even the servers at his favorite A&W. John always had a big smile, a kind word and a “dad joke” or one of his favorite “magic tricks” for his grandkids whom he adored.
John is survived and greatly missed by the love of his life, wife of 56 years Leona (nee Wolfe), his children Stuart (Jeanette), Stan (Raechel), Jodi (Bill), Bonnie, Curtis. Also missed by his grandchildren: Amy, Armand John, Arynne, Joel, Emily, Allison, Hannah, Emma, Griffin, Elijah, Zachariah, Dani, and Aubray. John will also be missed by his three remaining brothers, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Sunday at 2:00 pm at the River of Life Church 2405 Centennial Drive, Blind Bay B.C. (Shuswap Lake Estates building)

During these moves they welcomed two children, Sherry and Duane. Work at Mica Dam brought the family to Revelstoke in 1967, where Kim was born.
The family moved in 1972 to Sicamous and Wally started Wally’s Excavating with a dump truck and a backhoe. The dump truck became a logging truck for a move to Prince George in 1981. After several years there, they moved to Vancouver Island for work on the Island Highway. Eventually retiring from the Operating Engineers Local 115, Wally and Zella then enjoyed several years ‘homeless’ as they travelled throughout the US and Canada with their trailer. They settled in Tappen in 2006, moving to Salmon Arm in 2013.
Wally is survived by his loving wife Zella, daughters Sherry (Rick) and Kim (Jan), 8 grandchildren Courtney (Brett), Brittany, Duane (Alyssa), Emily (Bryce), Alyssa (Connor), Angela (Brent), Amy (Bobby), Brit (Brayden) and 7 great-grandchildren Hudson, Owen, Lila, Drew, Nash, Nora and Briar. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Lois, his son Duane (1980), daughter Joyce (1967) and son-in-law Doug (2019).
