January 2, 1938 – January 23, 2020
at the age of 82 years
Born on January 2nd, 1938 in Edmonton, Alberta, Geraldine Sylvia Swan passed away peacefully in her sleep at Bastion Place in Salmon Arm, BC, on January 23, 2020 at the age of 82 years.
Her final days were spent surrounded by her beloved family and friends and were filled with love, laughter, tears and singing.
Geraldine moved to England with her family at the beginning of World War II, where she lived in a home for girls with her sister, Marion. In 1948 she and her family returned to Canada by sea, where she would grow up in Beverly, on the outskirts of Edmonton. At the age of 16 she was crowned ‘Beverly Teen Queen’.
At 25 she met her husband, Colin Evan Swan – a handsome 35 year-old who had spent his twenties and early thirties leading seismic crews in Algeria and Venezuela. Gerry and Colin shared 45 wonderful years together, filled with many memories – most of those years spent on a farm in Rose Prairie (a farming community near Fort St. John, BC).
Colin and Gerry were blessed with five children: Burton, Cheryl, Janis, Robert, and Daryl. Spending 34 years in the Peace River country, the Swans built many life-long friendships and were leaders in their home church – Rose Prairie Gospel Tabernacle, where Colin was an elder and later pastor, and Gerry was a school teacher at Rose Prairie Christian Academy. After retirement, Colin and Gerry moved to Salmon Arm, BC in 2006 to be closer to family.
Over the years Gerry’s warmth and love for people was evident in her home. There was always room for one more at the table or around the Christmas tree. Even strangers would find themselves with a hot bowl of her famous homemade soup – made of whatever she could find in the refrigerator!
Geraldine spent her final years at Lakeside Manor where she enjoyed the community and friendships of many. She loved playing Scrabble with her sister Marion, Saturday drives with her brother John, time spent with her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, horses, ice cream and a good belly laugh. More than anything, she loved people.
She is survived by her children, grand children and great grand children: Burton Swift (son – John), Cheryl Sczebel (husband Jerry, children – Greg, Tanisha and husband Jamie, children – Justus, Rooney), Janis Rutschmann (husband Ralf, children – Shelby, Destini-Rae, Micah), Robert Swan (children – Kevin (wife Jaime, son Emmett), Christine Elsdon (husband Dan, daughter Amelia), Miranda, Brayden, Tiandra) and Daryl Swan (wife Michelle, children – Jared, Curtis), her sister Marion Palecheck (husband Neil), and her brother John Timmers.
Special thanks to the kind staff at Lakeside Manor, Dr. Kirkman, Bastion Place and all those involved that made her last days comfortable and enjoyable.
She will be greatly missed.

Reverend Ann Meakes officiating
With saddened hearts, we announce the passing of Henry Wanner on January 14, 2020, a long time resident of Sicamous, at the age of 96.
Henry left larger than life tracks for us to follow on our way.
Henry was born in Linz, Austria in 1923, raised by foster parents, he excelled in schooling, finishing two years ahead of his classmates. He was in the Navy at the young age of 17, he then became a police officer. Henry immigrated to Canada in 1951, with abilities to speak both French and English.
Henry started as a logger on the BC coast changing careers to underground mining at Keno hill, Yukon. He worked Barkerville, Hope, Merritt, to the building of the Mica and Revelstoke dams where he was a heavy construction supervisor until his retirement.
He met his wife Emma in Revelstoke and they were married in Barkerville in 1958. Henry settled in Sicamous in 1965, as to him, Sicamous was beautiful and reminded him of his Austria home place. It became a place in his heart to raise his family. He lived a long life, but dementia slowly robbed his quality of life. Henry was a private person, with a huge heart and a kind soul. He loved family, friends, fishing, hunting, gardening, wood gathering and the building of two homes in Sicamous. At the age of 80 he could still outwork anyone more than half his age even with his crippling arthritis in his knees and hands. He liked playing bridge and was a relentless crib player (out for the kill). He enjoyed reading Louis L’Amour, sipping rum, Yvonne’s sugar cookies and making home brewed beer.
Henry was predeceased by his wife Emma and son in law Ernie Smith. He is survived by his children Yvonne, Norman (Heather) and Kevin (Leslie), grand children Ryan, Sarah, Kodey (Shealy), Jill, Mandy and Tricia, great grandchildren Maddison, Layton, Becket, Hazel, Zackery, Cutrina, Isik, Libby and Miley as well as life long family friend Bob Schager who always took time out to just spend time with Henry.
Thanks to Eric Schuller who’s daily visits were very appreciated. Special thanks to staff and management of the Sicamous Manor as they far exceeded the expectations of helping Henry stay in his town for as long as they could.
A graveside service will be held at the Sicamous Cemetery in spring to reunite Henry and Emma.
Love lives on forever,
in each memory and thought,
of the special ones who meant so much
and the happiness they brought.
Love lives on forever,
it will never fade away,
For in our hearts, our loved ones
are with us every day.
God speed Dad

Douglas Raymond Ricketts, born February 8, 1936 in Mullingar, Sask. In 1972 he relocated to Princeton to raise his three boys Ian, David and Ross. Here he enjoyed camping and the great outdoors. Doug was a valued member of the community, who couldn’t say no when asked for help by anyone. This man with a big heart walked his age in km to raise money for the Heart & Stroke Foundation on each of his 67, 68 and 69th birthdays. He was a long-time supporter of minor hockey and the Lions Club. Doug was the life of the party with his harmonica in hand, he was a storyteller, and a darn lucky fisherman. Jeanette was the eldest daughter of Alexander & Hazel Kermack. Raised a country girl in her youth, she was the protector & boss to her younger sisters & brothers, as well as a “daddy’s girl” through & through.
In 1968 she met the love of her life, Ejner Andreasen. Within in three weeks of dating on Jan 18,1969 they were engaged. When asked how she knew after such a short courtship that Ejner was “the one” she said “I just knew. We could talk & talk forever”. The couple were married May 24,1969, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year.
The happy couple settled in Rosedale AB, welcoming three children into the family. After a time, they moved to Sorrento BC where they would settle in to the community for the next 41 years.
Jeanette always worked hard for the family. The first nine year as a home maker, then to get ahead, had juggled her careers and motherhood like a pro. She was an example to her children that it was never too late to learn or try something new. She was a sales agent, bookkeeper & more recently an insurance agent until her retirement. However, even in retirement she did not slow down.
Jeanette was part of many clubs & organizations in the area. She served on the board for the Shuswap festival of the art for many years. She was part of the Sorrento woodcarvers, book club, TOPS and doing many other volunteer positions in the community. She was always the “work horse”, never front & center, but making things happen from behind the scenes.
Jeanette loved to knit, crotchet, do photography and above all be a Nama to her grandchildren; Richard, Andi, Clayton, Jody, Thomas, Alyssa, Jessica & Kristina.
Jeanette is predeceased by her father Alexander, mother Hazel, brother Donald, nephews Darren & Bruce and sister in law Kellie. She is survived by husband Ejner, daughter Michelle, son Andrew (Ronnie) daughter Brenda (Clint), eight grandchildren, sister Dianne (Ed), sister Linda, brother Kenneth, special friends David & Donna as well as numerous nephews, nieces and many, many others.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kevin Goldberg and all the medical staff at the Salmon Arm General Hospital for Jeanette’s care & support in her last days.
A service will be held in remembrance of Jeanette in the spring at the Notch Hill Cemetery for all her family & friends at a date to be determined.
We thank everyone for their love & out pouring of condolences.

In loving memory of Ilse Seiz who on December 14, was again joined with her beloved husband George. Together they carved a Paradise from six acres of rural Ontario wilderness and raised four children. In retirement they moved to Salmon Arm, BC to be closer to their grandchildren and Ilse’s siblings. Ilse and George took great pleasure showing the next generation how to work the land, raise animals, and eat like royalty. Till her last day, Ilse kept her sense of humor and dreamt of skiing in the Larch Hills. Her good friends and the staff at The Good Samaritan gave Ilse love and support in her final years. Their compassion and attention were a huge comfort to Ilse and her family.

Sylvia Spivey, beloved wife of John Seddon, (daughter Tracy Orr), passed away peacefully in her sleep with her devoted husband by her side after a long battle with Parkinson disease and Lewy body dementia at the age of 78. Sylvia was predeceased by her first husband, Walter Spivey, in 1996. She is survived by her daughter, Stacey Pospisil (son-in-law Daryl) and son, Sean Spivey (daughter-in-law Claire, grandchildren Luke, Brooke, and Logan). Sylvia and John’s dream to move from Calgary to Salmon Arm, B.C. was realized in 2011. Despite the onset of her disease, they were able to maintain a life at home up until 2-1/2 years ago, when she needed full-time care. John’s never-ending love and concern for her care continued to be his primary purpose, visiting her twice a day every day, without fail. Sylvia’s many friends will remember her for who she was prior to her illness, a marvel of energy that she poured into her family and friends, daily workouts at the gym, and travel to Hawaii was also a favorite pastime. She loved being a grandmother, and it was a great joy to spend time with her three grandchildren. Sylvia never wanted a service; rather, she wanted to be remembered for who she was and not what the disease had done. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Darren Lorenz and the staff at Mt. Ida Mews in Salmon Arm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks instead for donations to either Parkinson Canada (

Our world got a little darker with the recent passing of a bright light. Ken will be forever loved and missed by his wife Alice of 66 years, children Shane (Bev) Jaffary and Darlene (Hal) Chambers. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, sister Marion Bourne of Edmonton, sister-in-laws Jean Hankins of Ponoka , Laverne (Victor) Kaupp of Lethbridge, and many nieces and nephews.
Ken grew up in Whiskey Gap and has always treasured the foothills and prairie lands of Southern Alberta. He spent the majority of his life in Coutts working as a Customs Officer, riding horses, going on trail rides, and hunting. His greatest love that he was most proud of was raising purebred Simmental cattle on Red Creek Simmental Ranch. His spirit always held strong with the cowboy way, still following his love of professional and amateur rodeo, cowboy poetry, and country music.
Ken and Alice loved traveling with their RV, the highlights being two trips to Alaska and many winter trips to Arizona. They moved from Southern Alberta to Salmon Arm, BC to enjoy the mountains, lakes, and family.
Ken touched the hearts of many people and had a large circle of friends. He loved to laugh, tell his stories, and will be missed by us all.

On Saturday November 23, at 1:00 pm, the family invites friends and family to celebrate John’s life at the Sockeye Room – Comfort Inn (1090 – 22 Street NE, Salmon Arm)
John Kurta, age 87, of Salmon Arm, BC (formerly Clearwater and Kamloops), passed away on Friday, November 8, 2019. He was born in Granada, Alberta. When he was school age, his family moved to Toronto, and then in 1946, moved again to Salmon Arm. After attending UBC and attaining first a forestry degree, and then a law degree, John settled in Kamloops where he and his wife Edwina raised their family. Being a man who preferred to be his own boss, John set up his own law practice (Law Offices of John Kurta). He also offered law services to the community of Clearwater. Edwina and John moved to Clearwater in 1997 where John continued to practice law and was ‘semi-retired’. Law was one of John’s many passions and his knowledge of case law was extensive due to many hours spent in the law library.
When not practicing law, most of John’s time was spent in the bush – fishing, hunting and camping with family or friends down some bumpy backroad, on the top of a mountain, or boating on a lake or river. Much time was also spent at ‘the farm’ in the upper Clearwater Valley, where John and Edwina eventually built their retirement home. He also traveled with his family to many Rotary conventions and danced up a storm with Edwina on the dance floor whenever an opportunity came up.
John’s contributions to community included membership and leadership roles with Kamloops North Rotary Club, Friends of Wells Gray, and Upper Clearwater Community Hall. John and Edwina also donated private land to The Land Conservancy to support the development of the Clearwater Wetland project, which was John’s vision in the early 70’s when he purchased land in the Upper Clearwater valley – with this, he and Edwina have left a legacy that will continue to be expanded and developed.
Things that we will always remember about John – his ‘Cheshire Cat smile’, his willingness to help family and friends, his long and detailed stories, getting set up for the perfect picture, his love and respect of the outdoors and the importance of the preservation of unique and special ecosystems.
Left to honour John and to remember his love and passion for life are his wife, Edwina, three children Sheryle (Neil) Campbell, Sandra (Chris Greenaway) Sulyma and Jim (Charlotte) Kurta, grandchildren Devon, Emma and Keean Campbell, Joel and Emily Sulyma and Anni and Sam Kurta, sister Iva Bonar, and half brothers Rick Gunderson and Ron Gunderson. He was predeceased by his parents Walter Kurta and Lena Gunderson, his brothers Eddy and Len and his sister Ella.
On Saturday November 23, at 1:00 pm, the family invites friends and family to celebrate John’s life at the Sockeye Room – Comfort Inn (1090 – 22 Street NE, Salmon Arm). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Land Conservancy (http://conservancy.bc.ca/), directed to the Clearwater Ancient Swamp and Wildlife Corridor Campaign, which will serve to connect to the land that John and Edwina have previously donated.

With his wife at his side, Jim Horkoff died peacefully at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital in Salmon Arm on October 20, 2019 at the age of 76 after a very short battle with Leukemia. It’s with much sadness to his family and friends that Jim passed so quickly but knowing that he did not suffer is a comfort to hold on to.

Jim enjoyed listening to classic country music and reading western novels. He loved working with his hands and operating machinery and tinkering with the latest electronic gadgets provided him with much enjoyment. Anne was an avid gardener from the time she was very young, and marrying Don, an Alberta farmer, on October 31, 1945 allowed her to realize her desire to grow beautiful flowers and vegetable gardens wherever she lived. They owned several businesses including: The Garden of Eatin’ fruit stands, The Broaster Kitchen, and The Market fruit stand at Sandy Point.
Being of Catholic Irish descent, Katherine’s life was rooted in her faith which meant daily Mass and rosary. She would pray by name not only for family and friends but also for anyone who mentioned their troubles to her; so her prayer intention list was quite extensive. She loved reading poetry and history and had a Bible quote or song for just about any occasion. Most of all she will be remembered by her family and friends for her wisdom and wit.
Katherine was predeceased by her husband Les, and sisters Margaret Black and Ellen Ward. She leaves behind children Les (Brenda) Blain, Greg (Glenda) Blain, Lonnie (Barry) Comin, Erin (Gordon) Pelletier, Leah Blain, Teresa (Wayne) Vandell, Rachael Tudan, Kierstin (Harry) Mujcin, and over 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Terry MacPherson and Genevieve Ring, her brother James Ring, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special thanks to the home care-aides who were a big part of mother’s life, first helping her care for her husband for 15 years, and then looking after her for the past two years. Mother loved them and enjoyed the conversation and kindness of each and every one.
Thank you also to the wonderful staff at Shuswap Lake Hospital who took amazing care of our mother during her last days. And thank you to Dr. Breugem for his care over the years.
A Mass of Christian burial is being celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Saturday, October 12, at 11 a.m. There will be prayers on Friday, October 11, 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s parish.
At her request, mom asks pardon of anyone she may have injured and forgives those who may have injured her.

Louise Marie McCarvill created her first noise as a Milner in June of 1936, her last sadly came in the dark early morn of September 21, 2019. In late 1954 my life came to the point where my heart was pierced by soft arrows of love…entered straight to my beating heart. The piercings were done with care and with love such that no other could be my glove. Somewhere after our first meet your spiralling love entwined about my soul, so together we could find our own special goal. Troubles we found and pleasures were too, but the troubles spun away as our spiralling love wound much faster around our own created electric love to dispel memories of troubled minds. The fire we employed brought forth a darling little Susan child who soon grew into not only a daughter but also a friend…just like her soon to arrive, little sister Lisa. Was it Susan’s antics and needs that caused a sister to become another who was fed in her high chair, while jealousy sprang from she…not being fed? Who really knows, but their happy growing together became pierced with a scream as a young brother entered the scene. A Rodger-being began to grow to become a young brother who liked to give us a shove. All of this was done with a mother’s love. While I was mostly off building things so we all could grow, but the most important part of my and our children’s life was your care and love we all could wear like a glove. Thank you and your spirit, my love, for guiding us all onto where we now live. As we stay behind you have been apprenticed as an Angel with love. Many may now feel the slight nudge to their heart as you direct them to show others their own true love. You have left us with your sweet love. It shall always be a hold together bond. Thank you my dearest ever friend. You have left me with children and with children of theirs…all surrounded with your sweet love. While you did leave here first you have also left behind your younger sister Vivian and her family too. I leave to you my love from your husband and friend: Eddie R. McCarvill

Rodney was born in Hay Lakes, Alberta. His family moved to BC when he was 2 years old. He lived in many places in BC and retired in Enderby.
Rodney did many things during his life. He was a hunter since 8 years old and loved being in the bush. He was a prospector, commercial fisherman, carpenter, grandfather and great grandfather.
He will be greatly missed by his four children, 7 grandchildren and his 13 great grandchildren.

We regretfully announce that Eddie passed away peacefully on Sept. 4, in the Shuswap Lake General Hospital at the age of 98.
He is survived by his loving wife Zoe; two stepsons Robert (Annie) of St Petersburg Florida and Bruce (Carol) of Surrey BC; 8 grandchildren Sean (Nicole) of Prince Rupert BC, Suzanne of Vancouver BC, Roy, Mitchell of Rossland BC, Jacqueline (Kyle) of Cumberland BC, Danielle of Chilliwack BC, Carrie (Doug) of Sardis BC and Paige of Vancouver BC; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild, nieces Betty (Loyal) and family of Arnprior, ON and Sharon and family of Edmonton, AB. He is predeceased by his parents August and Amelia, brother Dan, two sisters Elsie and Sarah his daughter Barbara and two nephews David and Don Wolfe.
Eddie was born in Ellerslie (Edmonton) AB on a homestead. He spent his younger years in Edmonton, playing hockey and lacrosse, and falling out of trees. His family moved to Vancouver when he entered grade 10 but he dropped out shortly after, looking for more excitement which entailed riding the rails, picking berries in the Okanagan and making money wherever he could. When war broke out, he hopped the first freight back to the coast to enlist with his buddies. This got him into the dental core with the Army where he was attached to the Air Force and served out the war on the west coast. His training led to him working in the dental lab business and he ended up as a partner in Fine Arts Dental Lab. He studied gold work in Washington to perfect his trade and was later indicted into the BC Dental Hall of Fame.
In his 40’s he tired of the long hours and started a new business in wholesale gifts, traveling across Canada twice a year to develop the E.R. Albert Co. Ltd. It turned out to be very successful and they left Burnaby when he was 52 to retire in the Shuswap. He and Zoe found a lovely spot on the lake and built their home in 1975; golf was his passion in retirement.
Service clubs included the Vancouver Kinsman Club and Fraternal Order of the Masons and Gizeh Shriners Club of BC.
Eddie must have left an impression on people as they never forgot him no matter how long since they last saw him. May he rest in peace.
The family thanks the caring staff at Shuswap Lake General Hospital with a special thanks to Kristie. We would also like to thank Dr Redel, Dr Bernard and caring staff at the Medical Clinic as well as the D&T Centre in Chase. Many thanks also to Fischer’s Funeral Services.

In late December 2018, Stephen had a freak accident at home and suffered a spinal cord injury resulting in quadriplegia. As devastating as the prognosis was, with his natural grit and determination he tried therapies and ideas suggested to him in the hopes of proving the prognosis wrong and making a livable life. Steve lived from hospital bed to wheelchair for eight months but never regained the joie de vivre he had for life. He went from I can’t live like this to I am living like this, to this isn’t a life for me. Stephen’s suffering from pain, impairment of strength and the inability to freely function ended on August 30th lovingly supported by his family.
Steve began his flying career in 1979. Together with wife Lori Anthony, they founded and operated their own air charter and scheduled airline, Shuswap Air. They offered daily flights between Salmon Arm and Vancouver as well as charter flights from the Salmon Arm airport for over ten years. For the remainder of his career, he flew up and down the west coast and all over B.C. and some western states. After semi retiring he took on private contracts flying overseas to S. Africa and Iraq. His flight log books reflect close to seventeen thousand hours in the air.
Stephen was a man of adventure and had many passions; an avid outdoors person who excelled at any and all sports, an obsessive card player (Life Master at Bridge and poker), a compassionate farmer who raised sheep on their small holding, a fellow who was intrigued with options trading on the stock market, a competent builder. The list goes on. Whatever he set his mind too, he achieved seemingly easily and effortlessly.
Stephen was born in Salmon Arm and lived many of his years in his hometown but also lived in Vernon, a year in Switzerland as a young boy and work related years in Steveston (Richmond, B.C.). His parents were Margrit Haemisegger Raffel and Helmut William Raffel. (both predeceased) His sister Suzanne Margrit Raffel Jenseth resides in New York state with her husband Richard Jenseth. Niece Adrienne Jenseth Sweeney (Danny Sweeney and children Eleanor and Will), nephew Alex Jenseth also reside in New York state. Stephen is lovingly remembered by Uncle Hansi Fred Haemisegger (Bobby Haemisegger, cousins Lisa Haemisegger Allis and Wynne Haemisegger Deckard), Aunt Leny Paul (Norm and Danny Paul) and Aunt Marianne Haemisegger Vezzani (Piero Vezzani, cousin Viviana Vezzani, husband Karl Spoerri and daughter Ava), cousins Marlene Rosmer Cottrell and Ron Rosmer. Beloved grandparents “Mutti” and “Granti” Haemisegger and uncle Dudley Paul, Aunt Leta (Michael) Raffel Rosmer, Uncles Hans (Marcella) and Carl Raffel and Granny (Anna) Raffel all predeceased. Also predeceased by his good dog, Ripper.
Steve and Lori have been extremely blessed to have had our wonderful family, friends and neighbours swoop in and circle us with their love and support over the last eight months. We are grateful for Dr. Warren Bell, the nursing staff at both Vancouver General Hospital and Shuswap Lake General Hospital and GF Strong’s rehab team. We have great love for each and everyone one of you. No service at his request. Soar high Stephen. 💗
Stephen was concerned about world conservation, wildlife and our role in being good stewards of our beautiful earth. Donations in his memory may be made to: https://donate.nationalgeographic.org/donate
