It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear father and husband, Cal, at home. He was born in New Westminster, B.C. and raised in the Fraser Valley. He began his welding apprenticeship in 1957 at Westminster Boiler and Tank. He married his wife, Jacquie, in 1962 and raised his girls in North Delta before moving to Langley. He was happily involved in Baseball, and Ringette with his daughters.
His favourite pastime was fishing, camping and watching the stock car races. He also enjoyed many trips south for the winter and the many travels he and Jacquie enjoyed together. His skill as a welder/fabricator enabled him to fix and build almost anything. Tinkering in his workshop and watching his grandchildren playing their numerous sports activities give him much pleasure. After retirement and moving to Salmon Arm, he enjoyed the Sunbird RV club, square dancing and quadding with the Sicamous Quadders. He enjoyed volunteering with Salmon Arm Citizens’ Patrol.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 57 years, Jacquie, and daughters, Laura Minnis (Miles), Paula Christensen (Ken) and Anita Thiessen (Dave) as well as his grandchildren, Brooks, TJ, Jenna, Keith, Sarah, Rob, and Shane. Cal is also survived by 6 brothers and sisters, many brother and sister-in-laws, as well as many friends and family.

July 26, 1946 – April 25, 2019 at the age of 72 years
I was about to say “on April 25th I lost my best friend”. But I didn’t, I know where she is and she took a big piece of my heart with her. She lived a lot longer than the medical community expected; as at age forty she was told she wouldn’t live another five years.
In the garden of life she always had a very hard row to hoe. But with her dogged determination hoe it she did; and in her 72nd year her deteriorating heart gave up the struggle. I envision her laying down her hoe, sitting at the end of the row with Jesus and discussing life in the garden with Him. Then she smiled, closed her eyes and fell asleep in His arms.
Needless to say her husband of 44 years, Wayne will truly miss Kathryn his ‘Queen of Hearts’. Her friends and family too. Especially her older sister (me) and younger brother Dan.
Sleep soundly dear sister, sleep sound. Miss you terribly – Love you deeply ~ Lynne ~

February 26, 1931 – March 29, 2019 at the age of 88 years
While Hal was in palliative care at Bastion, a young care worker came in to see him. She smiled at an elderly, old man coming to the end of his journey.
I looked at him and saw a young teenager in Winnipeg, shoveling snow off the Assiniboine River. He and his friends cleaned it so they could speed skate on the track they made.
I saw a hard working, newly married man driving the long lonely roads of Manitoba selling Carnation Milk coming home late Friday night, too tired to play with his son Kelly.
I saw a man sailing on English Bay with his new wife Glenda, face to the sun and wind at his back.
Later moving to Salmon Arm to retire and make new friends, be they young children or grown men and women.
Always his love of music could be heard playing at home with friends and family.
Yes, young people see an old man but for me the wrinkles, brown spots and the slowing of movement were just signs of a life well lived.
I see you everyday and always will my love.
Forever Young
April 17, 1936 – March 29, 2019 at the age of 82 years
It is with breaking hearts that we announce the passing of the gentle soul of our wife, mother and grandmother, Lenie Mannes.
Born in Rotterdam, Holland, she survived the War and immigrated to Canada three times: the first time when she was 17, the second time five years later, and once more, the third and last time, to live for the rest of her life in her beloved land of mountains.
In 1985, after the death of her husband, Lenie was introduced to Auke (Gus) Mannes through his sister, Henja. They held hands and never let go. Soon after they married and started a hobby farm in Fort Langley, wrangling the heifers and corralling the chickens. Lenie loved all animals and gave a home to many rescue dogs and cats from the SPCA over the years.
In 1992 Lenie and Gus bought an acreage and renovated their dream home on Grandview Bench, living there for 25 years until moving closer to Salmon Arm in 2017.
In between Lenie and Gus had many adventures, travelling across Canada twice by RV, the last time a three-month trip they thoroughly enjoyed, as well as trips to Alaska and Inuvik. Both members of the Antique Car Club, they had lots of fun going to car meets and outings with the club.
Lenie leaves behind her loving husband of 34 years, Auke (Gus) Mannes, Sr., three daughters Lori Pickering, Cindy Rudolph and Leslie Bowling, stepchildren, Diana Mannes and Gus Mannes, Jr., and grandchildren Eric Bowling, Meagan Bowling, and Ashley Rosenberger, and great-grandson Rylan Bowling, step-grandchildren Christopher Mannes, Audrey Crouser, and step-grandchildren, Auke Crouser and Owain Crouser.
Lenie taught us about love, generosity, and acceptance. She will live in our hearts forever.
The family would like to especially thank the palliative care nursing team at Shuswap General Hospital for their compassionate and professional care. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Shuswap Hospital Foundation, Shuswap Hospice Society or the SPCA.

SHUSWAP SEASONS
Shuswap, sweet land of shining lake and sun,
Where trees in spring hold blossoms to the sky,
Where melting waters, rippling, lakeward run,
And flights of geese o’erhead lift spirits high.
Then, by the lake, the redwing calls resound,
And sun-warmed people go their summer ways.
on orchard branches, rip’ning fruits abound,
And pink-mauve sunsets end the golden days.
In autumn, willows weep for summer’s close.
The gentle days wind down, leaves flame and fall.
The Lake of Shimmering Waters finds repose,
And wintry trees rise from their snow pall.
But nature’s cycle turns, this dear green place
Will wake anew beneath spring’s smiling face.
John and Irene had the following words they wished to share: “We have loved each other since the day we met and have had very many good friends and travelled to many interesting places. We also love the same music, especially classical. All in all, we’ve had a wonderful life and would like to thank all our dear friends for helping us on our way.” John & Irene Rodger.
Special thanks to the staff at Piccadilly Care Centre for their outstanding kind and compassionate care of both Irene and John and for enabling them to reside together until John’s passing. A celebration of Mark’s life will be held in Tappen, BC at Herald Park, August 17, 2019 at 1:00 pm
It is with heavy hearts we announce the the sudden and unexpected passing of Mark at home with Angel at his side.
Mark grew up in the Cariboo and his younger years were spent on Box Hill. This is where Mark started honing his craft in the carpentry arena, and striving for perfection. Dad would settle for nothing less. Mark, dad and his brothers built and put the shake roof on the family home on the hill. Mark and dad then roofed the shakes on the now Smith Antiques in Lone Butte.
Mark attended the one room school at Flying U on Green Lake until the school closed. Then attended Lone Butte school until it closed, on to the Junior high school in 100 Mile House. He also attended college in Abbotsford for his upgrading to grade 12.
Mark’s interest in mechanics and auto body work started when he was a kid on the hill, he would find these old cars and trucks, score them for next to nothing, and dream of getting them restored. He tinkered on these for years, his dream was realized when he attended college in Kelowna and earned his certificate in Auto-Body Repair. He finished high in his class and won financial awards for his work. At the time of his passing, Mark was restoring his antique dream car in his shop in Tappen.
Mark held a variety of jobs over the years. Cooking in a Greek restaurant, silver culture, mill labourer, working in the boat building industry, auto body repair, painter, many private jobs in carpentry and auto mechanics field. He said his best and last job was working for Dimps. On a daily basis she voiced her appreciation for the work he did.
Mark enjoyed riding his motorcycles, going to stock car races, participating to crash to pass races, golfing, fishing, hunting, playing ball and always BSing over a cup of coffee with all he knew.
Having no children of his own, Mark focused his attention on his nieces and nephews and his greats. His discipline with them will always be remembered, never once having to raise his voice to have them listen intently. He always had a listening ear and most certainly let them know when he felt they were straying down the wrong path.
Mark is predeceased by his parents, Merritt and Angelina Leask, stepmom Donna Stewart, sister Marcy Ann, niece Taylor and his best friends, Chicko, Bandit, Taz , Cruiser and Star. He is survived by his brothers, Michael (Crystal), Wayne (Bonnie), Shawn (Christina), James, His sister Michele (Don) many nieces and nephews and greats, and his dog Angel.
Special mention and thanks to his Friend Noal, you were there for him when it mattered the most. Thank you!!

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved, Robert(Alvin)Hall at the age of 88. On Monday, March 18 as the sun was rising, our beloved went to sleep peacefully surrounded by his family. Alvin was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa, he was the pillar of our family and our loss is palpable.
Alvin was born on August 8, 1930 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He ventured out to BC as a young man and found work in Vancouver at Magregor’s Warehouse and later at Canada Starch in Burnaby. He met the love of his life, Audrey, in 1952 in Vancouver, BC and they wed June 20, 1955. They had 4 children together and eventually settled in Maple Ridge, BC. He was a business minded man who opened a family drive-in burger shop in Maple Ridge and when he moved to the Salmon Arm area in 1980, started a janitor service in which he held a contract with the Centenoka Mall for many years. Alvin enjoyed traveling, fishing, woodworking, birds, gardening, tinkering on cars and reading books, but he got the most enjoyment out of spending time with his family, including his pets, and telling stories from his younger years. Alvin was also Santa at the Centenoka Mall for many years and he always got so much joy from making the little ones smile.
Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Audrey, his 4 children, Lavern Stoesz, Kerry Hall, Garth (Val) Hall, Belinda (Jamie) Zack, his 7 grandchildren, Tracy Danbrook (Chris McElgunn), Brandi (Josh) Wood, Kristy Hall, Christopher Zack (Chell Bara), Brandon Zack, Cody Zack (Jess Daniels), and Samantha Zack (Francis Thomas) as well as his 13 great grandchildren, Levi and Caden Danbrook, Cohen and Ethan Wood, Savannah L’Heureux and Mackenzie Hall, Taylor, Riley and Dylan Zack, Haidyn Zack, Jaxon Zack, Zoey and James Zack. March 26, 1927 – March 3, 2019 at the age of 91 years
Else left us on March 3, 2019 at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Salmon Arm, just 3 weeks shy of her 92nd birthday.
Born in Denmark, March 26, 1927 to Nicoline and Axel Ranch. Her parents traveled via ship to Canada from Denmark in about 1929, when Else was barely two and her sister Greta was four.
Else was predeceased by her husband Odin, daughter Susan, grandson Marlin, and brother Paul.
She is survived by sons Randy (Nella) and Tim (Deb), daughter Zara, grandson Aaron – grand daughters,Allison, Krystal and Melody. great grand children, Kyle, Dillon and Derek, several young great-great grandchildren, as well as two sisters Greta Wiffin in Florida and Miriam Swift, in Toronto, Ontario, with nieces and nephews around Canada and the USA too.
Else married Odin Lunden at the young age of 19 years, travelling from city of Hamilton, Ontario to the Northern town of Peace River, Alberta. They had met in Hamilton when Odin was just out of the army, having served in WWII.
They lived on his farm in the Peace River area, located down the Weberville Road. There she experienced the many joys and hardships life had to offer people struggling to make a living in the county. A city girl learning to be a farmer’s wife was very difficult for her at first. She had nothing but praise and gratitude for the experienced country farm women who helped her learn and cope with the life. Odin had a standing joke, that the first bread she baked was so hard, they used it as a foundation for the addition to the farm house they built.
She was an exceptionally talented artist, poet, writer, seamstress, musician and singer, as well as a very smart business woman. (Well read and educated in the East) Odin was very proud of her when she could fill in their own farm tax forms, understanding the legal side of things. She also became an exceptionally good cook. Her artistic talents extended to decorating many, many beautiful unique wedding cakes for friends and neighbours over the years.
Else and her husband Odin moved to the Okanagan BC, in 1991 for the warmer climate. Odin passed over in 2002 and Else continued to live in the area, her last two years at the very comfortable modern independent living for seniors, Lakeside Manor, Salmon Arm, BC.
An Ode to Grandma
Grandma, on a winter’s day, milked the cows and fed them hay, hitched the mule,
drove the kids to school…did a washing, mopped the floors, washed the windows and
did some chores…
Cooked a dish of home-dried fruit, pressed her husband’s Sunday suit…
swept the parlor, made the bed, baked a dozen loaves of bread…split some
firewood and lugged it in, enough to fill the kitchen bin…
Cleaned the lamps and put in oil, stewed some apples before they spoiled…
churned the butter, baked a cake, then exclaimed, “For goodness sake!” when the
calves ran from the pen, and chased them all back in again…
Gathered eggs and locked the stable, back to the house and set the table…
cooked a supper that was delicious, then washed and dried all the dirty dishes…
fed the cat and sprinkled clothes, mended a basketful of hose…then opened
the organ and began to play: “When You Come to the End of a Perfect Day…”
A special Thank You goes out to the caring staff at Lakeside Manor for the exceptional care you provided to Mom over the past couple of years.
As per request, there will be no funeral service. Private family internment will follow in Chase, BC. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
August 25, 1944 – March 3, 2019 at the age of 74 years
Christine Laura Simpson, beloved wife, mum and friend, quietly slipped away from us on March 3, 2019 at the age of 74.
Born in Bournemouth, England on August 25th, 1944, Christine was an only child. She happily grew up surrounded by many adoring aunts and uncles, as well as her loving parents Eunice and John Costa. The family photo album is full of pictures of adventures: beach excursions to Mudeford Beach in Dorset to dig for clams, playing ‘poohsticks’ on a countryside bridge, trips to the London Zoo, exploring ancient castle ruins and family holidays to Switzerland. In April 1962, she met her first husband, Alexander, at the Royal Ballrooms in Bournemouth and by November of that same year they were happily married. A son, Alan, was born in Nailsea, England in May 1964. Struck by an irresistible sense of wanderlust, the family moved from England to Australia in 1967. After several years, homesickness for the misty isles brought them back to England in 1971 — a few months later, having suffered through a bout of the ‘worst flu in history’ coupled with a miserable, damp English winter, they came to their senses and promptly boarded a ship back to sunny, warm Australia where their daughter Julie was born in early 1972. It wasn’t long before wanderlust struck yet again, this time leading the growing family to the South Island of New Zealand, where David was born in 1973 and finally, to Canada, where they settled in Calgary in 1976. Life doesn’t always work out the way we plan – in 1986, Christine and Alexander divorced on amicable terms and remained close and life-long friends. In 1988, Christine met and married Dale Simpson –together for over 30 years, they worked as a husband-and-wife team, eventually settling in the Tappen, B.C. area with their motley assortment of pets.
Christine was a unique lady, unconventional, but always stayed true to herself, her beliefs and the things close to her heart. To her kids, she was never a ‘milk and cookies’ kind of mum – although she was known for making the most delectable, richest Christmas pudding and custard, a throwback to her proud British heritage. She liked to hog the video game console for hours, driving us crazy (she was a master at Astrosmash on the Intellivision.) She loved good music played loud and spent many happy hours transferring her impressive vinyl collection onto tape, always warning us kids “not to bounce on the floor!” and cause the record to skip. To the envy of our friends with a more conventional parent, we grew up watching movies like Cheech & Chong and History of the World: Part 1. You can get a good sense of her style of humour with this gag Christmas gift found under the tree one year – a cheque for a million dollars drawn from the ‘Bank of Dumb Shit’ – (go watch Nice Dreams if you don’t get the joke – we still chuckle over that one.) She was a very talented seamstress and sewed many of her own clothes, including matching mother-and-daughter outfits (much to the dismay of said daughter.) She had a distinct personal style all her own, along with a curious and open mind. She was active in the Peace Movement in the 1980’s, and in later years, she loved to sit and do cross-stitch and listen to late-night radio, especially Coast-to-Coast AM with Art Bell. She loved country drives and picnics – Skimikin Lake in the Shuswap was a favourite spot to go with her many beloved dogs.
And so we come to the end. The end of a life, but not the end of her spirit, which will live on in her husband, children and grandchildren, friends and loves. She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by her loving husband of 30 years, Dale Simpson, and cat Catkin; Daughter Julie (Daniel) of Cranbrook, BC, sons Alan (Anne-Marie) of Calgary, AB and David (Iris) of Kelowna, BC; grandchildren Laura, Patrick and Nigel. Pre-deceased by her ex-husband (but friends to the end) Alexander Matchett, and her loving parents Eunice and John. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fischer’s Funeral Home, Salmon Arm, BC. Donations can be made in Christine’s name to the SPCA. A special thank-you and big hugs to the nurses and staff at Bastion Place who took such gentle and loving care of our mum. A Celebration of Life is being planned for May 11, 2019, 1:00 pm at the Cedar Heights Community Association in Blind Bay on Shuswap Lake, the place most dear to her heart.
Our beloved Nancy passed away gently on February 24, 2019 surrounded by loved
ones.
She is survived by her loving husband, Brian, her children, her parents Bob and Shirley Young, and many loving friends. Nancy met and married her first husband, Lionel Hennessy, while working at the Royal Bank in Nanaimo. They were proud parents of Shannon, Deborah, Adam, Ryan and Rebecca.
Several years after Lionel’s passing in 2005, Nancy married Brian Waddington and became stepmom to Garry and Karen. She loved all her children. She was the perfect mother. She leaves 9 grandchildren whom she adored.
Nancy and Brian retired to Blind Bay on Shuswap Lake. She was captivated by the beauty of the area and the warmth of the local residents and she and Brian quickly became active participants in the community… playing golf, Pickleball, and joining Probus. Retirement afforded time to take up hobbies of interest. She discovered she
was artistically talented. A visiting art instructor was overheard saying “I don’t ever want to see you in my classroom again, Nancy. There’s nothing I could teach you, as you have a wonderful unique style – all your own”, and indeed she did. As the sister of Peter (aka Dr. Peter) she worked as a Founding Board Member of the
Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation to create the Dr. Peter Centre in Vancouver. Her illness was sudden and unexpected and progressed rapidly with no treatment options. She left us years before her time. She loved people and made many lifelong friends. As Christine, a good friend, said “Nancy was the whole package”. Those lucky enough to have known Nancy will agree. She was special.

Marion Agnes Morris (83) the oldest daughter of Bill Alison and Irene Wells. She had many fond memories of playing outdoors with her four siblings; George, Edith, Jean, and Bill in Revelstoke (BC). At the age of sixteen she met and married her husband Stanley James Morris (Jim). In the first years of their marriage they had a farm in Saskatchewan and she enjoyed watching the lightning storms on the prairies. Later, they moved back to BC and bought a farm outside of Salmon Arm. The small house and farm would become their home. They built a bigger house, designed beautiful gardens, had chickens, cows, and horses. Their home was welcoming, warm, and open to their family and friends, just as they were. Marion and Jim created a loving life together and shared that love with their many nieces, nephews and adopted family. Marion worked as the manager of Ready’s Drugstore, where she made many friends in the community. When she wasn’t at work, she could often be found camping, boating, or hiking with family and friends. She didn’t stay still for long and at home she would be busy with baking, cooking, canning, sewing, or drawing. She was immensely creative and talented. Marion was passionate about nature and animals, her little farm was the perfect spot for her to watch for bears, deer, raccoons, birds, and frogs. She had the most incredible encounters with wildlife all from the safety of her patio. We love you deeply, you were a mother, aunt, sister, grandmother, and most of all our friend. We miss you, The Alisons, The Gross’s, The Morris’s, The Sage’s, and The Watties.

Eric and Jenni moved to the Shuswap in 1998 when Eric retired and after arriving there he was, for some time, a member of the Shuswap Vintage Car Club, the RCMP Veterans club and he served on the Shuswap Fire Suppression Committee. 17 years ago he and Jenni moved to Shuswap Lake Estates and became members of the golf community where he had so many good friends, wonderful neighbours and great golf partners – if not so many great golf scores.
He will be so missed by all of his family and friends but he will always be in our hearts.
The family would like to thank his doctors, and all the nurses and caregivers at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital.
No service is planned immediately, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when the weather improves. If anyone feels inclined, they may make a donation in Eric’s memory to the Shuswap Lake Hospital Foundation.

Celebration of Life: Saturday, June 8, 2019, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., 1968 Skimikin Rd., Tappen, BC
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alice Todd at the age of 90 on December 28/2018 at Hillside Village in Salmon Arm with her loving family by her side.
Alice was a kind; patient and caring person who loved to laugh, dance, sing and play piano. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Alice was born in Bentley AB then moved to the lower mainland where she found love and started a family. She raised her family there before moving, first, to Armstrong then settling on a farm in the Skimikin Valley.
Alice was extremely hard working, tough as nails, and wore many hats throughout her life. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She worked as a Psychiatric nurse, forestry worker, trapper, farmer, cake decorator, florist, among many other things but ended her working career as an entrepreneur owner operator of a successful bottle depot.
Alice loved her flowers, especially her roses, and spent many hours building beautiful flower beds. Alice’s days were always full. She spent her time doing everything from gold-panning, taking her grandchildren foraging for edible plants and mushrooms to writing science fiction.
Alice was pre-deceased by her husband Andy Todd and her brother Gerry Bauer.
She is survived by her sister Rhoda Johnson(Jim), brother Eldon Bauer(Diane) sister Shirley Haggkvist (Earl) and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her 3 children, Andrew Todd(Louise), Douglas Todd(Gayle), Linda King(John); her 6 grandchildren, Melinda Bryson(Jason), Curtiss Todd(Tina), Andrea Moser(Nick), Randall Todd(Chantal), Nicole Beath, Jason Beath(Lita); and her 9 Great-Grandchildren, Alexandra and Wade Bryson, Cameron Todd, Rudy, Ryder and Rayce Moser, Jacob Todd, Kayden and Alina Beath.
Following Alice’s Wishes there will be a gathering for family and friends in the spring among the flowers she so loved.
Thank-you to the entire staff at hillside Village especially those of cabin 1, whose love and care made Alice’s life more enriched; and to Fishers funeral home for your kind support and professionalism which made our difficult time a little easier.
“Remember me with sunshine and laughter for that is how I will remember you, if you can only remember me with tears and sadness, then don’t remember me at all.”
When the shocking and sad time arrives,Vince will guide you seamlessly through the process. I highly recommend the caring, professional service of Fischer’s, they could not have done a better job. Thank you so much❤️
Recently, my mom passed away suddenly in Palm Springs, California. My dad was devastated with grief, but he had some amazing friends nearby who helped him thru the process. In order to start that process, they needed the name of a funeral service in Salmon Arm that the people in the states could be in contact with about the handling of the remains. One of the friends recommended Fischer's Funeral Services, so they were called and They were amazing..they handled all the paperwork and kept in close contact with both the funeral homes and the people dealing with certificates and such. They will also help the spouse with some paperwork regarding taxes if necessary. When my father and I went to see them regarding my mother's wishes, they were so accommodating and did not hesitate to do everything they could to make this as pleasant as they possibly could. We even changed our minds a few times about things at the last minute, and they made it all happen just the way we wanted. My mother didn't have the usual service and it was the best choice we could have made for her and Fischer's did everything to make the day absolutely beautiful from the room setup to the layout of the flowers and urn. They also supplied all the little stuff that you don't even think about in a time like that( paper plates, cutlery, coffee, tea, etc...) and it took a giant load off of my mind so I could concentrate on making this the best send off I could for my mom and for that, I will be forever grateful.I am quite bad to judge how much food and such to get for events , we had way, way too much leftover, but I felt happy about it because I knew it wouldn't go to waste. It gets donated to the local Women's shelter and so I feel that even though my mom is gone, she is still giving to others, and that is the best feeling.I was amazed at the cost of the service. I have heard horror stories about the thousands and thousands of dollars it can cost and I was concerned because of the situation in dealing with the US that the cost would be one of those stories, but that was the most reasonable cost I have ever seen, and a house will not have to be mortgaged to pay for it ... 😊A BIG shout out to Fischer's for all you did for me and my father and may the Heavens bless you both!
