It is with great sadness and fond memories that we announce the passing of Lawrence Joseph Filiatrault at 86 years of age at Shuswap Lake General Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Lawrence was born in Maillardville to Leo and Mary Rose Filiatrault. The family moved to Quesnel where Lawrence spent his formative years and started school. He also lived with his older sister in Nelson, BC where he finished his schooling. At age 16 he returned to Quesnel and worked at a variety of odd jobs until he went to work at the Cariboo Farmers Co-op that launched him into a 12 year career in the Dairy industry, He attended the Agriculture School at UBC to study and earned his Pasteurizing ticket. He worked in a number of areas of the Dairy Field before moving to Salmon Arm in 1963, where he operated 3 businesses over the next 50 years. He opened the first business with his father – L & L Motors. He was one of the first 4 Datsun Dealers in Canada and enjoyed that business for a number of years. He and his wife Margaret opened and ran Fili’s Deli for a few years, and when that business sold, he started Frames by Filiatrault which he ran until he retired at age 75.
Lawrence belonged to two service clubs and was an alderman in the Village of Salmon Arm for two years. When the Village and District amalgamated, he decided not to run for Council again as he wanted to spend more time with his growing family. Lawrence met and courted his wife in Quesnel. They married in 1959 in Vancouver. Their two sons were born in Vancouver in 1961 and 1963; and the third child – a daughter was born in Salmon Arm in 1967. The family spent their leisure time camping and fishing all over the province for a number of years; having many wonderful adventures and experiences. They also had a memorable trip camping and travelling in Mexico. Lawrence was also known as a skilled ‘fly fisherman’.
Lawrence was bitten by the travel bug when he travelled to Japan in 1969 as a guest of the Datsun Motor Company. He and Margaret travelled to Hawaii a few years later on a trip organized by Bob Hall of the Big R., but had to wait for further extended travel while business took precedence. They did travel back and forth to Japan to visit their sons and families during those years. In 1994 they took a year off and spent time in Japan, other South Asian countries, and the UK, and travelled Continental Europe by car. Other travel included trips across Canada and around the province.
Lawrence was proud to be a Canadian, loved Salmon Arm and cherished his family. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother Bert. Left to grieve are his beloved wife Margaret of 62 years, and his children, Christopher of Vancouver BC, Stephen of Japan and Michelle of Cherryville, BC: eight grandchildren – Norio, Tyler, Eugene and Sarah of Japan, Emily, Elisha and Davis of Lumby and Enderby., Leo of Sorrento and three great grandchildren, his two beloved sisters – Lorraine and Leota (Lee) Salmon Arm, BC, sister-in-law Norma, Aldergrove, and their children. Lawrence was close to many members of his extended family; fondly remembering his nieces, and was especially grateful to his nephews who were helpful over the years, and during his months in the hospital.
Lawrence was thankful for and appreciated the many nurses, doctors and specialists who cared for him in the hospital. He also appreciated his personal physician Dr. Weicker who cared for him for a number of years.
A private family Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
Halverson, Shirley Jean

Shirley Jean Halverson passed away peacefully at Shuswap Lake General Hospital on April 05, 2022, at the age of 91. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Gordon Halverson and is survived by her son Bruce (Shelly) Halverson, daughters Lisa (Ben) Honcoop, Gayle (Chris) Johnson, her much loved grandchildren & great grandchildren, and by her brother, George Healy of Langley, her nieces & nephews, as well as dear friends Barry & Sally Tarr.
Shirley was born in Burnaby March 25, 1931, where she lived until her & Gordon moved to Salmon Arm in 1973. Prior to having children Shirley worked at Woodards Dept. store in Vancouver, then stayed home to raise her 3 children, other than part time work for the North Burnaby Credit Union. She then worked at Ben’s Towing in Salmon Arm for a few years.
Mom & Dad fell in love with Salmon Arm after camping here for many years which prompted their move here. They were seasonals at Sandy Point for over 25 years and loved to host many happy hours on their deck, with mom always putting out snacks of cookies, peanuts and chips. Shirley was affectionately known as Mom, Grandma and Gigi to many extra people in her life. There was a steady stream of extra “grandchildren” at her trailer door where they knew they would find treats of popsicles and/or cookies. In the past Shirley loved to go bowling and was on a ladies league for several years. She loved to play crib and did so with Gordon at crib nights at the legion. During her stay at Andover Terrace, Shirley renewed her love of crib and was often found at the crib table. Shirley will be fondly remembered for her homemade cookies and jam and her very popular knitted slippers. Her cookie jars were always full! Her kids and grandkids all loved stopping by to be spoiled by “grannie”. She would pretend to be mad and shake her finger at them for too many cookies, which never worked. She had a wicked sense of humor right to the end, if you got the finger pointed at you…. well, you knew the queen bee had spoken. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother (grannie) and Gigi to all of us who would do anything for her family. She will be missed very much.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Heunis for his friendship and fantastic care to Shirley. A huge thank you as well to the nursing staff at SLGH who although most of the time were working short staffed and run off their feet, still maintained caring for Shirley with kindness and compassion. Special thanks also to Leanne and Yeiko.

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Donald McVicar (Mac) Esselmont on April 4, 2022 at 82 years old in Salmon Arm, BC.
Born on April 27, 1939 in Stewart, BC he was well known for his fun loving spirit, wit, quick laughter and lifelong love of golf.
Predeceased by his parents William and Muriel, his brother William and sister Patricia, he will be lovingly remembered by his sister Lynn (David), ex-wife Maureen, daughters Tanya (Rob), Nicole (Jay) and Kelly, grandchildren Tyler, Matthew, Jayne, Katelyn, Ryan and Tristan as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mac moved to Maple Ridge in 1944 at the age of 5 and moved with his family to Smithers in 1978, to Victoria in 1991 and finally to Salmon Arm in 1997 where he enjoyed many rounds of golf with friends and family. In 2017 he moved into Arbor Lodge where his quick smile and happy demeanour more than made up for his inability to communicate with words due to the Aphasia he suffered from since 2016.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff and care givers at both Arbour Lodge and Mt. Ida Mews.

It’s with immense heartbreak that we announce the passing of a most exceptional woman of the Shuswap. Bunny is preceded by her parents John, Edith Whitehead and brother Ernest. Survived by brothers Joe, Jack, Carl and Kahn.
Bunny is well known in her community as a generous and unstoppable caregiver, living her life in dedication to her family and friends. She was the heart of the community and her home on the lake was the gathering place. Those who were fortunate enough to be present with family and friends on her deck overlooking the lake will cherish the memories and light hearted exchanges of stories of the Shuswap. All was welcome at Bunny’s for a delicious home cooked meal that generally broke out into a rowdy card game lasting well into the evening. We will all miss you.
Mohle (nee Martin), Dorothy Margaret “Doffy”
July 17, 1930 – April 2, 2022
at the age of 91 years:
Dorothy (affectionately known to family and friends as Doffy) was born in Ixopo, Natal, South Africa to her parents Frank and Ada Martin. The beloved memories of her childhood on the farm lasted to Doffy’s final days and inspired her lifelong love of animals and nature. Tragically, her father passed away before Doffy was seven, and she and her mother moved to the nearby town where she was able to attend school while her brother Denis took over running the farm. Her elder brother Nigel was killed in the war in 1944 and this affected her deeply.
Doffy attended boarding school and then Teachers’ College before heading off to teach school in the little village of Gingindlovu, and it was there she met her husband-to-be, Dennis Mohle. The primary grades were her favourite, and the years of teaching little ones created such happy memories.
Doffy and Dennis were married in 1954. In the following years, they had two children, Nigel and Jennifer. They provided a welcoming home to many family members and friends, some for whom Doffy became a beloved foster mother.
Dennis, Doffy, Nigel and Jennifer moved to Canada for the first time in 1968, settling in the town of Powell River BC, where Doffy taught at a local elementary school. Missing family and friends, they returned to South Africa in 1970 until the lure of life in Canada called them back, returning in 1977 to settle in Kamloops, BC. Although she no longer taught in school, Doffy spent many years giving piano and organ lessons, volunteering at the neighbourhood schools and the church thrift store plus helping with the Shopping for Seniors program. The Mohles connected with other ex-South Africans in Kamloops, and they formed a new family of friends, gathering frequently for holidays, celebrations, and vacations. Auntie Doffy happily provided music and favourite foods at these events.
In 2008 Doffy and Dennis moved to Salmon Arm to be closer to family. Doffy put her volunteer hat on once again, assisting in the shopping program through the Seniors Resource Centre.
Doffy dearly loved her grandchildren and great-granddaughter, and she treasured days when family came to visit. Special baked goods, gardening, and knitting projects were among her hobbies.
The past several years presented increasing health challenges for Doffy, and the last year saw her separated from Dennis as she spent significant time in hospital before moving to her final residence at Piccadilly Care Centre. The family would like to thank the wonderful care teams who were so kind to Doffy while in their care.
Doffy was a special lady who was very loved and will be missed by many. She has a special place in the hearts of her husband Dennis, son Nigel (Leahann) and daughter Jennifer (Bill), her grandchildren Jordan (Alex), Taegan (Dane), Ashley (Jacob), and Brent, and her great-granddaughter Kate. Her nieces, nephews and many friends will remember her love and kindness.

“Gene” passed away April 2, 2022 (age 81) at Vancouver General Hospital after a valiant struggle recovering from surgery.
Gene is predeceased by her loving husband Len (Jan. 2017), her father Ross Davis (1984), her mother Katherine Davis (1994), her sisters Maxine (1999), Betty (2021) and her brother Lester (2016). She leaves to mourn, her daughter Kimberley Ludwig, son Kevin (Melinda) Ludwig and daughter Kerri (Bruce) Frederickson. Grandchildren Mitchell, Travis (Allie) and Evan (Rojina) Leggett; Rachael, Eric and Jessica Ludwig; Kate-Len, Micah and Jakob Frederickson, plus four great grandchildren Memphis, Carsen, Kymberlin and Holly. Also, her sister Valerie Macgregor, sisters in law Beryl Ludwig and Wendy Davis, brother in law Christopher Ludwig, many nieces, nephews, cousins and many many friends.
Gene was born in Duncan, BC January 2nd, 1941. She met the love of her life in Youbou, BC. They married in 1961 and settled in Surrey.
After graduating high school, Gene took her Psychiatric nurses training at Riverview Hospital graduating in 1961. She then worked at Woodlands School until she retired in 1999 just prior to relocating to Salmon Arm in 1999. Gene was an active member of several Quilt Guilds and knitting groups in Salmon Arm where she met many of her wonderful friends.
We will miss Gene who was known for her great hugs, no nonsense attitude, powerful hands, jokes, stories and being a great advice guru. You are missed.
Neale, Albert “Al” William

A service will be held on Saturday May 7, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Anglican Church, 170 Shuswap St. SE, Salmon Arm, followed by a tea and time to share your “Al” stories. The community is welcome!
Al Neale died in Salmon Arm after two days in hospital. He leaves a wide circle of friends, family and community who will both miss him and feel lucky that he touched their lives. He was a gentleman above all: kind, compassionate, generous, humble and social. Many of us will remember his great sense of humour and quick wit.
Al’s long, and well-lived, life began on March 25, 1925, when he was born to parents George and Betty Neale in Lethbridge AB. In 1954, he married Elizabeth (Beth) Hillier-Holt. They and their two children, Lisa and David, lived in Calgary where Al worked at various jobs. Al’s beloved wife, Beth, died in 1969 at age 41, leaving Al as a single parent of their young children.
In 1976, Al bought his home in Sorrento and became part of the community. He was an active volunteer and donor to many causes, including the Shuswap Branch of the BCSPC and the Shuswap Community Foundation. It was through volunteering that Al met, and fell in love with, his “dearling”, Beryl Herdan. They spent two decades together, traveling, dancing, volunteering, socializing and caring for each other. Sadly, Beryl passed away at home in February 2021 and Al’s life changed again. With his characteristic positive attitude, Al moved into Andover Terrace in August 2021 where he became a part of a warm and caring community.
Al was predeceased by his son, David (2011). He is survived by his daughter Lisa and her son Cody and David’s wife, Lorry, and their children Camron, Casey, Trinity, and Chelsea as well as great-grandchildren. Al will be missed by Beryl’s children: son Greg (Laura) Peterson and their children Justin, Nathan, and Katelyn; daughter Linda (Brian) Wallace and their son, Geoff; and daughter Pamela Davies and her children, Graham and Megan, and their families.
A service will be held on Saturday May 7, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Anglican Church, 170 Shuswap St. SE, Salmon Arm, followed by a tea and time to share your “Al” stories. The community is welcome!

Robert Alistair “Big Al” Fleming, was born February 23, 1932 in Vancouver. He was raised in Britannia Mines. He resided in Sicamous for the last 37 years. Survived by his common-law wife, Colleen Carr, stepchildren, Cindy (Bill) Robertson; Rick Carr; Tammy (Brian) Seppala, six grandchildren: Chelsea, Natasha, Brendan, Kealin, Jordann & Matiasn, seven great grandchildren, his sister Sheila Seahagen, as well as a niece and nephew. With heavy hearts we announce that Michael Barry Yuill passed away March 23, 2022 at the age of 48.
Michael was born April 22, 1973 to his mother Maureen Yuill in Hinton, AB. He passed away unexpectedly with his family by his side.
He leaves behind his two children Rebecca Yuill (Matt), Zackery Yuill, their mother Tressa Hobson (Ron) and their step-siblings Carlos Pincheira, Shyann Pincheira (Matteo). He also leaves his mother Maureen Yuill, his dad Ken Welch, brothers, Leonard Welch (Daniella), Nathan Welch (Michelle), ½-sister Melanie Therrien, ½-brother Aaron Therrien, step sister Tina Senenko (Todd), Rodney Sudnik (Alison), his inlaws Howard and Laverne Hobson, brothers in law Mike Hobson (Cherrie), Colin Hobson (Laura), Russ Dutton (Sherri), step grandparents Mary Jewett, Dorothy Sudnik who had just passed away in June, girlfriend Kristina Knight (girls Taylor, Hailey and Maddison) as well as lots of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that are like extended family and all that knew him.
Mike was predeceased by grandparents Clark Yuill, Noreen Yuill, Mary Welch, Bill Welch, Pat Therrien, Rose Therrien, his father Dan Therrien, friend Ken Collins and a number of cousins, aunts and uncles.
Michael has been in the Salmon Arm area for 30 years and was well known in the community. He has been a training officer at White Lake Fire Hall, owner of Heaven Sent Satellite, bartender and bouncer at Outlaws, manager of Off the Beat Pub. He was also known as Shrek, Big Mike and Boss for Salmon Arm Security.

Olson, Bryan Marvyn

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our beautiful son Bryan in Kelowna BC.
Bryan is survived by his mother Annamaria Collopy (Rob), sisters Amy and Emily Olson, stepmother Patti, stepbrother Bryan Collopy, uncles Vince (Tammy), Pat (Sue), David (Barb), Dale, aunts Yvonne (Jim), Kathy and Cheryl (Brad).
Bryan was predeceased by his father Marvin Olson (2020), grandparents Vincent and Alice Fischer, Bill and Ella Olson, uncles Gerry, Leslie and Richard.
Bryan lived most of his life in the Okanagan and loved spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing, playing baseball or just hanging out with friends and his dogs.
He never hesitated to offer help when someone was in need. His smile and laugh were truly contagious and he will be remembered by his many friends as a kind, compassionate and generous soul that will be truly missed.
A celebration of life will be held on May 21, 2022 from 12:00 – 3:00 at the Rutland Centennial Hall – 215 Shepherd Road Kelowna, BC.

In the early morning of March 18th, 2022, Minnie Hawthorne passed peacefully away, gaining her wings to walk among the angels. She is predeceased by her husband, Earl Hawthorne, daughter Sandra Hawthorne, and Son Robert Hawthorne. She is survived by her grandson Brian Storteboom and great-grandson, James Storteboom.
Minnie was born on February 20th, 1935, she grew up in Pelle Saskatchewan. She met her husband Earl working in Toronto and moved out to British Columbia together. She and Earl worked and lived in Delta before retiring and moving to Salmon Arm. Minnie was well-known within her community, friends, and family as the kindest, most selfless, and most caring person throughout her lifetime.
May her soul be at peace, she is dearly loved and will be forever missed.

Mernett, Esther Anne

Esther passed away early morning March 16, 2022, short of her 99th birthday. She was predeceased by her husband Edward, infant daughter Beatrice, son Arthur (Maisie), sisters Edith (Eeli) Simonson, Marjorie (Bill) Murray, Kay (Bill) Laird, brothers Alan Teece, Philip Teece and Jack (Lauretta) Teece.
She is greatly missed by her large immediate family including spouses: Alan (Karen), Andy (Diana) (d), Esther (Keith) Monroe, Gloria (Dan) (d) Greene, Chuck (Kim), Dale (Amy Pon), Edna (Al) Vinet, Gus (Joy) (d), and Tess (Joseph Boothman). She will also be missed by her sisters Sarah (Jack) (d) Marsh and Margaret (Jack) (d) Amies and her numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mum was born in Chilliwack and grew up in North Vancouver and Pender Island. After marriage she lived for over 70 years in Coquitlam spending many of them on a small farm where she had cows and chickens. Mum enjoyed bowling for several years in Port Coquitlam. In 2016 she moved to Lakeside Manor in Salmon Arm where she made many friends. Included in her list of skills were shuffleboard, bingo and scrabble and she didn’t like to lose. As she neared the end of her life, she was lovingly cared for by her daughter Edna Vinet and niece Eila Power. Family was Mum’s greatest asset.
A family get together in remembrance of Mum will be held in June in Armstrong.
Pyper, Marlene Denise

It is with great sadness the family of Marlene Denise Pyper (nee Doerkson) announce her passing in Salmon Arm, BC, on March 12, 2022. Marlene was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta to Hank and Florence Doerkson. She was born 10 and 12 years after her 2 older sisters who were like little mothers to her during her early childhood. She was 4 years old when she and her family moved from Grande Prairie, Alberta to Salmon Arm BC.
Salmon Arm would be Marlene’s home from this time on. There she raised her daughter Tonja, and for many years it was the two of them. Marlene was a kind, loving and selfless mother who shared an incredible bond of friendship, support and love with her daughter throughout her life. Marlene was also a devoted grandmother who was loved by her three granddaughters.
Marlene and Richard, her husband of 20 years, enjoyed camping and boating trips with their friends. Over the years, Marlene worked at Ready’s Drug Store, Pharmasave, Shuswap Lake General Hospital and finally her dream job at Shuswap Family Resource Centre. She was a volunteer at the Canadian Cancer Society Office in Salmon Arm for many years.
Marlene was loved for her warmth, her humour and her kindness. She was a good friend to many including her lifelong friend, Missy Blair, and a loved partner, Richard. She leaves behind her many happy memories of love and strength and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Marlene will be sadly missed by her husband, Richard, daughter Tonja (Matt)Workman, mother, Florence (Doerkson) Abney, sisters, Glenda Jones and Lois (Ron)Schindel, three granddaughters, Madison, Morgan and Mackenzie. She was predeceased by her father, Hank Doerkson in 1982.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Vancouver General Hospital and Shuswap Lake General. A special thank you to Dr. Keith Hepburn. Thank you to the family and friends who spent time with Marlene and supported her during her battle, it was graciously appreciated.

With heavy hearts we share the peaceful passing of Danielle Taylor McElroy (nee von Hansen) on March 3, 2022.
Danielle was born in Vernon and grew up enjoying the many beautiful beaches in the Okanagan. In 1996 she obtained a BA in Sociology/Anthropology. She moved to rural Tappen, BC in 1999 in order to enjoy small town life and to be closer to nature. For 20 years she was a professional consulting astrologer and enjoyed helping people across the world understand their lives better from the view of Psychological and Evolutionary Astrology. Dani enjoyed spirituality, playing the piano and she loved animals and adopted a vegan lifestyle. A talent in cooking subsequently flourished as well as an interest in essential oils and aromatherapy.
Her quiet and thoughtful manner touched her many friends from all backgrounds and whom she all loved dearly. She married Shawn McElroy in 2011 and is survived by her husband, her sister Maja (Jim) and brother Tom (Lori). We will forever miss her kindness, her graciousness, and her guidance in our lives.

Greg (Harold McGregor) McDiarmid died at home of lung cancer on March 2, 2022. Greg maintained his sense of humour until his last day with us. Before he died he expressed how lucky he felt to be living in a country where so much money and resources were available for a dying old man.

Marion passed away February 27, 2022 in palliative care at Bastion Place.
She is survived, and will be missed by her sons, Brent and Kevin, one sister, Hazel Storey, and three brothers, John, Gordon and Roy Tomlinson. She also will be missed by nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.
Marion was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1951, and it was her strong faith and love of her Creator, Jehovah, that helped her throughout her life. She took great comfort in the Bible’s promise of a resurrection to life on a paradise earth. (Acts 24:15)
We would like to thank the Palliative Care Nurse, Geneva, for her excellent care, as well as the nurses, care aides and staff at Bastion Place and Lakeside Manor for their loving, caring help.

We are saddened to announce the passing of June Thelma Erickson (nee Utgaren) on February 24, 2022 at Hillside Village in Salmon Arm at the age of 88. June was born on the family farm near Beechy, Saskatchewan. She married Freeman (Bland) Hoover and moved through several towns in SK and BC while raising two boys Sid and Daryl. June moved to Salmon Arm in the late 60’s where she was a nurse at the Salmon Arm Hospital, then met and married Ted Erickson. They lived in Blind Bay operating the Ponderosa Resort for a number of years. She volunteered with the Salmon Arm Art Gallery, participated in numerous Salmon Arm Fall Fairs, enjoyed painting and offered pine needle basket weaving lessons to anyone who was interested, and these write-ups with photos can still be obtained on the Gallery’s website.
June was predeceased by her husband Ted, son Daryl Hoover, brother Harold Utgaren and brother-in-law Norm Hoffman. June is survived by her sister Aileen Hoffman, brother Arnold Utgaren (Virginia), sister-in-law Helen Utgaren, son Sid Hoover (Shelley), grandsons Matthew Hoover (Michelle) and Ryan Hoover (Samantha), 2 great-grandchildren Emery and Noah, step-daughter Sharon MacKenzie (Ed), their sons Lochie (Mieka), Bren (Sarah), Conor (Christie) and great-grandsons Hysen, Oscar, Colton, Robson, Gordie and Jordie, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A special thank you to the staff at Hillside Village and to Sherry for the time you spent with June over the last few years and for all your beautiful hand made cards.
There will not be a service but June will be interred with her son Daryl near Beechy later this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a Dementia/Alzheimer charity of your choice.

On February 24, 2022, John Froese of Chase B.C. completed his journey and went to his final destination to be with his savior whom he loved and served.
John was born on April 13, 1943 in Vanderhoof BC, he was the youngest of 10 siblings born to Abe and Suzanna Froese. With a household of that size, a couple of skills that John had to learn in order to survive and thrive were to talk and care. And thrive he did! John used these skills throughout his life in the many business and sales positions in which he worked. More importantly to John though, he used those skills to encourage, build into the lives of those he came in contact with, from his fellow workers to the foster children they took in, to the employees who worked for him and even the servers at his favorite A&W. John always had a big smile, a kind word and a “dad joke” or one of his favorite “magic tricks” for his grandkids whom he adored.
John is survived and greatly missed by the love of his life, wife of 56 years Leona (nee Wolfe), his children Stuart (Jeanette), Stan (Raechel), Jodi (Bill), Bonnie, Curtis. Also missed by his grandchildren: Amy, Armand John, Arynne, Joel, Emily, Allison, Hannah, Emma, Griffin, Elijah, Zachariah, Dani, and Aubray. John will also be missed by his three remaining brothers, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Wally passed away on February 22 at the age of 87 in Salmon Arm.
Wally was born in Monkland Ontario on October 17, 1934 to William and Bertha Hill. He moved west to Alberta for work in 1957 and met Zella in 1958. They married in 1962, moving numerous times in the early years of their marriage for his work as a heavy-duty equipment operator on highway jobs. During these moves they welcomed two children, Sherry and Duane. Work at Mica Dam brought the family to Revelstoke in 1967, where Kim was born.
The family moved in 1972 to Sicamous and Wally started Wally’s Excavating with a dump truck and a backhoe. The dump truck became a logging truck for a move to Prince George in 1981. After several years there, they moved to Vancouver Island for work on the Island Highway. Eventually retiring from the Operating Engineers Local 115, Wally and Zella then enjoyed several years ‘homeless’ as they travelled throughout the US and Canada with their trailer. They settled in Tappen in 2006, moving to Salmon Arm in 2013.
Wally is survived by his loving wife Zella, daughters Sherry (Rick) and Kim (Jan), 8 grandchildren Courtney (Brett), Brittany, Duane (Alyssa), Emily (Bryce), Alyssa (Connor), Angela (Brent), Amy (Bobby), Brit (Brayden) and 7 great-grandchildren Hudson, Owen, Lila, Drew, Nash, Nora and Briar. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Lois, his son Duane (1980), daughter Joyce (1967) and son-in-law Doug (2019).

On Saturday, February 19, 2022 we said our final goodbye to the dearest husband, father and grandfather alive, Helmut Janzen, as he slipped away from us to begin a whole new journey. The long goodbye is over.
Helmut was born on April 30, 1944 to Jacob and Anna Janzen in the Mecklenburg region of Germany during the Second World War. Their little family was part of a group of Mennonite refugees fleeing both Nazis and Russians. Jacob was captured by Russians in 1945 and sent to Siberia (never to return) while the family set out on a hazardous trip to find safety. Eventually they arrived in Germany’s American sector and lived in a refugee camp for years before emigrating to Canada in 1948. With mother, grandmother, uncle and two older siblings, Helmut, age 4, finally arrived at his new home in BC’s Fraser Valley on Sumas Prairie.
It was a hardscrabble life for the family, as it was for so many refugees, but intense hard work by all, even from a young Helmut, gave the family the security it needed to eventually carve out a good life. As Helmut grew up being the “man of the house” he learned how to make do, repair, and invent solutions to all sorts of problems, skills he used throughout his life. He served a year in the Royal Canadian Air Force, trained first as a meat cutter, then later as a floor layer/tile setter. During this period, he lived in Trail, Clearbrook, Kamloops and Sorrento. With a partner, he opened a floor and hardware shop in Sorrento in 1972. Then, in 1976 he went to work for Irly Bird Building Supplies in Salmon Arm (which later became West Fraser, Revelstoke, Revy and finally, Rona). He retired in 2006 but was so restless, went back to Rona within three months on a part-time basis and worked for several more years. Many people benefited from his incredible DIY knowledge.
During those early years, he married his sweetheart, Karin, in 1967 and they produced son Spencer in 1971 and daughter Gillian in 1972. In 1985, the family moved to Salmon Arm and remained there up to the present time. Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s Disease struck and after some years of coping it became necessary for Helmut to move to Hillside Village Care Centre in 2019. It wasn’t long after he moved there that Covid-19 became a factor and in the last two years he was denied the comfort of his family for months at a time. Fortunately, Karin was able to visit during this last lockdown as an essential visitor.
Who was Helmut? He worked hard, played hard and lived life to the fullest! He loved to golf and fish, watched TV sports (especially football), lived for those get-togethers and parties with family and friends. He enjoyed boating, camping and travelling to far-off places. Music enthralled him and oh, could he dance! He was always busy with things that “had to be done” and never said no when a friend or neighbour needed help. He could be stubborn and opinionated, but in the end, everyone knew him as a kind and gentle man. He cherished his family and was so proud of his kids who inherited his wonderful work ethic. Helmut always enjoyed a good laugh and that laugh was so infectious!
Helmut, 77, leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Karin; son Spencer (Janet) Janzen, daughter Gillian (Gerry) Rasmuson; seven grandchildren: Nicola, Owen, Anika and Austin Janzen and Morgan, Logan and Brookelyn Rasmuson; his sister Olga (John) Coers, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Helmut chose to be cremated and his internment will happen later this Spring. Family and friends plan to gather at some future time to reminisce.

Margaret Bell Zorn (nee Graham) passed away at Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Salmon Arm, B.C. on Thursday, February 10, 2022, at the age of 96 years.
A worship service in remembrance and celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at Deo Evangelical Lutheran Church, Salmon Arm led by Pastor Erik Bjorgan on Saturday, April 2 at 2:30 p.m.
Margaret was born July 18, 1925, in Toronto Township, Peel County, Ontario and raised on the Graham family farm at Derry West near Brampton by her parents, George Henderson Graham and Sarah Margaret Graham (Bell) and the Graham clan of the area. Margaret aspired to work as a Civil Engineer, an uncommon job for women in the 1940’s, but she trained as a nurse at the Wellesley Hospital in Toronto. With a nursing classmate and a strong sense of adventure, Margaret took the train to Vancouver and the Union Steamship to Alert Bay, B.C. for her first nursing job, where she met her husband-to-be for 52 years, Oscar “Ozzie” Zorn, a B.C. Provincial officer and then a RCMP officer.
By quiet example Margaret served God, her Family and her Community.
Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Helen (Roger) Eberle of Vernon, B.C., son George (Jeanetta) Zorn of Salmon Arm and Grandsons Matthew (Jessy-Ann) of Salmon Arm and Stephen of Revelstoke.

Shane Ashley Johnson, 55, passed peacefully at Shuswap Lake Hospital, Salmon Arm, B.C. with his love Katrina by his side.
Shane was born in Alert Bay, BC to Evelyn and Erik Johnson. He grew up in Colwood, BC. He attended Camosun College and became an automotive technician, and enjoyed his work at the Victoria Shipyard until his accident in 2012.
Shane was very proud of his children and their accomplishments and took great pleasure spending time with them.
Shane is survived by his partner Katrina, children Brittany, Tyson, and Kyra, mother Evelyn, and brothers Darryl (Betty), Neal (Tara), Perry (Denise) and his nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Erik.

Schmucker, Patricia “Pat” Evelyn

at the age of 85 years:
Pat was born in the Stouffville area of Ontario, the second of Aaron and Etta’s 5 children. She spent her childhood and youth on the family farms right up the lane from grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. From that time of her life we were told of walking to school along the farm lane with her cousins, maple syrup and apple butter making on the farm and skating on the pond. She recently mentioned the boys (Jake and Dave) setting up lights so they could skate at night. She married Den August 1957. They lived in Ontario until 1981. That year they moved to BC. They have been living in the Sorrento area since then. Pat and Den have 4 children, Yvonne (Randy), Cheryl (Gunther), Sandra and Brad (predeceased her in Feb. 2012). Pat has 9 grandchildren- Wendy, Jess, Becky, Val, Brian, Shaina, Jared, Ben and Dylan. Pat has 5 great grandchildren- Kurtis, Madison, Alivia, Cooper and Beau.
Pat has been busy with various jobs out of the house and kept very busy at home. I do not recall a year she did not have a garden and that meant freezing veggies, making wine and salsa to name a few products from that labour. The biggest canning projects were in Ontario when she would drive to Vineland and load the suburban with peaches! Another of her jobs was keeping the business books organized for Dennis’s masonry business. Some of her other activities were spending time volunteering at the Churches of Salmon Arm thrift shop, helping with potlucks at church and playing piano for church services. Another one of her ‘likes’ was going on road trips. The longest was her and Den’s trip to the east coast of Canada. Pat started driving at 14-her first ride- a 2.5ton farm truck going into town on errands for her dad and Pat enjoyed driving ever since.
In the family, Gramma Pat is known for the best ever roast chicken, butter tarts, countless Phase 10 rounds and Euchre (Never trump your partners Ace!!).
All of her family send out a special thank you to the staff in ‘6’ at Bastion who took such awesome care of our ‘Chatty Patty’ during the 2 years she resided there.

We are saddened to announce that on Feb. 1, 2022, after her battle with cancer, Elizabeth Ann Pudwell (Betty) was called to sing her hummingbird song to the Lord.
Born in Regina, SK, Jan. 29, 1944, she was adopted into the loving family of Percy and Estelle Gamble and lived in Golden Prairie, AB. Later they moved to Medicine Hat, AB where she met the love of her life, Harold Roy Pudwell and married Dec. 29, 1962, and they sang in perfect harmony for 59 years.
She leaves behind 2 children, Corinne Milne (Ivan) of Vernon, BC and Dale Pudwell of Victoria, BC, 3 loving grandchildren and 2 loving great grandchildren all in Vernon, BC. Elizabeth leaves behind a sister-in-law in Bassano, AB (wife to her deceased brother Jack)

With sorrow and rejoicing we announce the passing of Cornelis (Neal) Vandergugten. He follows his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary, who passed away one month earlier on December 24, 2021.
Neal was born in Katwijk, The Netherlands and was the oldest of 8 children born to Diederikus and Hendrika Vandergugten. He immigrated to Burnaby, BC in 1951 at the age of 17 where he soon met Mary. They married on August 31, 1956 and were blessed with 65 years of marriage.
Neal passed away and entered into heavenly glory at the age of 87 years in Salmon Arm, BC. We rejoice that he has been relieved from his broken heart and earthly suffering. He is survived by 4 children Rick (Ludi), Pete (Celia), Larry (Lynn), Marion (Rob) De Boersap; 16 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kristin (2018) and his beloved wife, Mary (2021).
Dad is best remembered for his love of family, adventure and fishing. He was a skilled craftsman and could build anything from furniture to a house with precision. Dad was a hard worker who built up his own construction company and employed hundreds of people over the years. He was always generous, eagerly sharing the bounty God had blessed him with. Dad loved to sing in church choir and the men’s chorus and he was renowned for his beautiful whistling. He and mom loved to travel and spent months exploring BC, the Territories, the western States and Mexico. Dad was so thankful to God for blessing him with his beloved wife for 65 years and was eager to join Mom in glory.
Dad – Grampy will be greatly missed.

Richard Selwyn Hunter (Rick to family and friends) was born in Salmon Arm January 4, 1945, third child of Bill and Ursula Hunter. Life on the farm was tough in those days and spending money had to be earned with hard work. Rick spent his Saturdays doing his “rounds” of the elderly neighbours – chopping wood, weeding gardens, mowing grass, cleaning up the Drive-In Theatre, earning a reputation as a reliable, hard worker.
As a young child he was introduced to square dancing by his parents, the beginning of a love of dancing that lasted all of his life.
BCIT lured him to the “big city” where he learned Hotel Management. This career choice led him to work in Barbados. Returning to Canada two years later, Rick switched careers and went into the new world of Computer Programming. But the wanderbug had been ignited. After three years, Rick climbed into his 1960 Rambler and headed south – crossing Panama by car (a story for another day), down the Pan American Highway of South America, and then up to the big cities in Brazil. There he found a job and a culture that he fell in love with along with his first wife Denilda.
Returning to Canada in 1973, he moved into the world of Industrial Accounting while living in Calgary. When boredom set in, he added hairdressing to his resume, owning and operating 2 salons with his wife, before including night auditor at a variety of hotels into his repertoire.
In 1991 he loaded wife and two children into a Little Chief motorhome and set off for South America again. After a year-long adventure the family returned to Canada in 1992. They moved into the former home of Rick’s mother’s uncle. It was the first mail-order Sears house building kit ever built in Salmon Arm in 1940. Rick had dreamed of living and retiring in that very house with it’s million dollar view.
In 2001 he returned to the world of square dancing where he met Brenda, who quickly became his best friend. Upon their marriage in 2008 he welcomed 4 more teenagers into his life. Brenda and Rick were often seen waltzing across the floor of Glen Eden, and the Enderby Legion.
A strong component of Rick’s person was his love of church, of singing, of dancing, and helping others, including the Friends At Christmas dinner (feeding 200 people on Christmas Day) for 16 years. Every year he shared his love of food with gifts of home baked Christmas cakes, fresh pressed apple juice and homemade bread and pies.
He was first diagnosed with cancer in 2015, but in typical Rick fashion he refused to let that minor detail get in the way of enjoying life. In 2016 he took Brenda to visit his beloved Barbados, headed north to the Yukon in 2018, drove to Ontario in 2019, and in 2020, just before the world shut down due to Covid, they spent 9 weeks exploring the beauties of Brazil. In between cancer treatments they went again to the Yukon in the fall of 2020.
In October of 2021 he broke his previous best record by picking 1600 lbs. of grapes in a single day at a local vineyard. Rick’s positive attitude and various treatment methods enabled him to live fully until the tenacious cancer gained the upper hand and Rick passed away January 23, 2022 shortly after celebrating his 77th birthday.
Rick’s death leaves many more people saddened than were smiling at his birth, a sure sign of a life well lived.
Rick was predeceased by his oldest sister Wendy (Orlando) Pecora in 2020 and is survived by his sister Jane (Eric) Clausen, and “the twins” Ron (Sue) & Ted (Lois) Hunter, plus a nephew and 4 nieces.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of almost 14 years Brenda Smith, and children Angela Hunter (Perry Wuest) of Cobalt ON, Mathew Hunter (Tara Harrison) of Calgary AB, Kyle Jones of Salmon Arm, Michael Jones (Shanelle McQueen) of Chase, Erica Jones (Dave Crutchlow) of Whitehorse, and Risha Jones (James Taylor) of Kelowna. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren: Jasper & Hans Wuest, Oliver and Emma Hunter, and Perry Jones.
His indomitable spirit remains, closely wrapping all of us in his never ending love.
A Celebration of Rick’s Life will be held later this summer.

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to an amazing man, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, nephew, cousin and uncle. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Wayne worked at B.C. Hydro for 36 years as a powerline technician. He ran a crew putting up poles and running wire as a subforeman for many years. He ended up leading the line room in duties, switching and working in the front office. He retired in 2007 after a major heart attack that almost took his life.
Wayne had the driest, most delightful and hilarious sense of humor, and left us all with many funny and loving memories. He was a true gentleman to those he loved and was not known to back down from a worthy opponent. He loved the outdoors, loved back roading, camping, fishing, skinny dipping (haha). He was a man of his word and would do anything for his family, a huge Elvis fan and could dance any dance; I hear they used to clear the dance floor for him. That “Werk could Twerk!!” (haha). His trademark was his infamous “eyebrows” who took on a life of their own, but “no one” was allowed to touch them! He was witty and charming, loyal and a real man’s man. He was true to his word and well respected and loved greatly by all who knew him. Rest in paradise my beautiful husband Wayne. I love you to the moon and back.
Predeceased by his father, Edward Werk, his mother, Florence Werk, his brother, Larry Werk, his sister Sharon Little, his son Adam Zimmer and pets Niko, Koda, Kyra, Taz, Sammy and Bear Dog.
Survived by his wife Arlene Werk, his daughters, Carol Zimmer (Doug), Christina Miller (Tyler), sons Lyle Leeson (Charlie), Dave Werk (Debbie), Roger Werk (Shelley) and grandchildren, Riley, Spenser, Evan, Elle, Brooklynn, Blake, Jaedynn, Aaliyah, Austin, Joshua, Krystal, Dustin, and his beloved dog Meka.
His wishes were not to have a funeral or service. At a post Covid date, there will be a small Celebration of Life at one of his favourite lakes or campgrounds to spread his ashes. It will be posted on Facebook when that time and place is ready. Donations can be made to the Heart and Lung Foundation.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Vivian Marie Asham (Simpson) on January 23, 2022, at the age of 86, in Salmon Arm, BC. Vivian was able to spend her final days with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her parents Earle Simpson (Catherine) and Enid Dufault (Maurice) and numerous siblings, family and friends. Left to mourn her loss is her husband of 64 years, Roy Herbert Asham and her children, Mark Asham (Shelly), Brenda Balfour (Randy Stepputat), Ron Asham (Dawn) and Brent Asham. She also left behind 6 grandchildren: Nathan, Bryce (Kaitlyn), Krystal, Brianna (Tage), Deana, and Taegan, along with 2 great-grandchildren, Irelynn and Bennett.
Vivian was born July 4, 1935 and started life in Dominion City, MB. As a child she lived in Port Arthur and Ear Falls, ON. As a young woman she worked as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone in Toronto. She moved to Winnipeg,MB where she met and married Roy on February 28, 1957, where they started their family. The family moved to Teulon, MB in 1972 to raise their 4 children. She spent many hours volunteering for the Teulon Hockey Association where all her boys played. After raising their children, Roy and Vivian moved to Maple Ridge, BC (1990), then Alberta (1997) and finally to Salmon Arm, BC (2014) where she resided until her passing.
Some of her hobbies included knitting, ceramics, treasure hunting at garage sales, bingo and collecting photos of her grandchildren. Vivian had a great love of hockey, especially the Calgary Flames.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Angela Plessis and the nursing staff on the 2nd floor of the Shuswap Lake General Hospital for their compassionate care of mom in her final weeks of life.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Diabetes Association. To honour mom’s wishes there will not be a memorial service.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) John Montgomery, on January 18, 2022, at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, succumbing to injuries sustained in a car accident on January 4, 2022.
Robert was the eldest son of Alfred and Florence Montgomery of Quesnel, B.C.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, children Betty, Dale and Rose Chamberlain, seven grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren; his mother, Florence Lavington of Salmon Arm, sister Shirley (Glen) Fillinger of Williams Lake, nephews David(Luanne) and Dean (Tracy) Montgomery of Quesnel, their families, Kevin (Kelly) Long of Vancouver, as well as many other relatives.
Predeceased by his daughter, Florence Eastman, grandson, Jeremy Chamberlain, father, Alfred Montgomery, sisters Stella and Sandra, brother Richard, great niece Natasha Montgomery.
Robert (Bob) will be remembered as an honest, hard working man, easy going, kind and generous. He lived and worked in Williams Lake, Quesnel and Okanagan, settling in Vernon. He was a self taught musician, playing guitar with various groups throughout the years, was involved in the Elks Club, enjoyed reading, card games, especially Cribbage and loved a good joke.. He was devoted to his family and rarely missed the weekly visit to his mom. He will be missed.
Our gratitude to the medical staff at Kamloops and Vernon Hospitals, and a special thank you to Betty Chamberlain, who has taken care of all arrangements.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Andy was born in Saskatoon, SK and lived in Sherwood Park outside of Edmonton AB, then moved to Blind Bay, BC in 2007.
The life together with his wife Shirley of 59 years and married for 53, brought with it many great adventures. His great pride in life were his daughters, Christine & husband Cory Grundberg, Jennifer & partner Todd Butler and their extended families. His beloved grandchildren Bryce Dykes & wife Shanna and extended family, Ariana Robella, Ryean Rasmussen & partner Keith Schmidt, Kade & Jaedenn Rasmussen, his great-grandchildren Sophia & Charlie Rose Dykes and Jasper Schmidt.
He was predeceased by his parents James & Nettie Dykes, and will be dearly missed by his sister Margaret Telford & family, brother Jim Dykes and wife Lillian, along with his extended family and many great friends. Andy touched the lives of so many with his big smiles, big stories and big dreams. He made it known that he lived his life to the fullest and had no regrets.
There were no goodbyes, but rather he would say, “See you all on the other side”.
In memory of our Andy, we look forward to raising a glass to toast the wonderful life he had. We hope you can join us on Sat Feb the 12th 3-6 pm at the Copper Island Pub. Christina (Chris) Harris (aged 68 yrs.) passed away January 13 at the Salmon Arm general Hospital after a brave, courageous but painful battle against a very aggressive cancer.
Chris is survived by her loving husband Tom, two sons John (Becky) Brooke and Brent (Danielle) Auria, also siblings Kathy (Wes), Nancy (Steve), Mike (Deb) and numerous nephews, nieces and their children and many other relatives and friends she knew during her life.
Married in Vancouver in 1974 Chris moved to Valleyview, Alberta to be with RCMP husband Tom. Later after their sons were born, they lived in Killam, Morinville and St. Albert, Alberta.
In 2009 after husband Tom had retired Chris who was an Edmonton accountant semi retired and they moved back to BC. (Blind Bay) She retained some Alberta clients and continued to provide them accounting services from Blind Bay.
Chris loved animals both small and large. Approximately 11 years ago Chris visited the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge near Chase, BC. She fell in love with the gentle and loving donkeys and volunteered to help the owners/ founders in whatever way she could…. accounting, fundraising and donkey care and was passionately involved with the refuge until her death.
Chris always enjoyed sewing and joined some of the local quilting groups and over the years crafted numerous beautiful quilts for herself, family and friends. She enjoyed her time with the quilters and made numerous great friends…
Another joy in her life was spending as much time as she could with her granddaughter Auria in Blind Bay.
Chris and Tom loved to travel and over the years together they were lucky enough to travel to many exotic locations in the world. On a few occasions they traveled with friends and relatives and had many exciting fun-filled vacations. Her favorite destinations were in Mexico, and most favorite city to visit was Las Vegas Nevada….
Chris really enjoyed movies and almost every Saturday afternoon her and Tom could be seen at the Salmar Grand theater in Salmon Arm.
Chris will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The Harris family wishes to thank the wonderful and caring doctors, nurses and staff at the Salmon Arm General Hospital. With special thanks to Salmon Arm doctors, Heunis, Glanville and Main. And, also doctor Ellard and her staff at the Cancer Center at the Kelowna General Hospital.

Eric passed away January 10, 2022 at Mt. Ida Mews, Salmon Arm at the age of 104 years. He was born November 26, 1917 at St. Davids, Wales.
He was predeceased by his wife Vivian in 2001 and will be missed and lovingly remember by his son Hugh Evans, Scotland, daughter Norma Sherridan, Parksville, BC, grandsons Brendan and Gregory Sherridan.
Eric immigrated to Wilkie, SK April 23, 1928 at age 11. At 40 years old, he ran a propane business in Fort St. John, BC, before moving to Salmon Arm in 2000. He enjoyed golfing and was very good at it; even playing with the pros. A jokester in any circumstance and a generous person by heart; helping many in the Filipino community financially and also helping out others by randomly handing out gift cards for groceries.
Thank you to all the doctors and nurses at Mt. Ida Mews for the care given to Eric.
Eric has been buried at Mt. Ida Cemetery beside Vivian.

It is with great sadness that John Paul Shannon died suddenly at home on Sunday, January 9th, 2022 at the young ripe age of 82, he was born on February 21st, 1939 in Long Branch, Ontario.
Paul was much loved by his wife of 59 years, Eleanor Shannon (Powell), his three children: Michael, Kathleen, and Laureen Shannon, seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by Sabrina, Ron, Austin, Victor, Jory, Joshua, Kayden, and one great grandson: Jaxon.
Paul was a great storyteller, and it was always an adventure when you were with him. He loved being involved and took an active role in the community. Paul will be sadly missed by friends and family!

Joyce Arlene Weleschuk, 79, of Salmon Arm, BC, passed away on January 6, 2022.
Joyce was born in Camrose, AB on December 12, 1942. She married Eugene Weleschuk on May 22, 1965 in Salmon Arm, BC. She was involved in Beta Sigma Phi for 42 years. She was very crafty and enjoyed doing arts and crafts. She loved to camp and fish but didn’t catch very many. She also loved to ATV and belonged to the Revelstoke ATV club for about 10 years. She enjoyed travelling, knitting, Brazilian embroidery and crocheting. Her greatest accomplishments in life were being married and raising her family. Joyce wanted to be remembered for all the happy times she spent camping and travelling.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Laurie Peterson, 3 brothers, Frank, Joe, and Jamie.
Joyce is survived by her husband Eugene, children Raymond (Tami), Edward (Tina), Melody (Stephan), and Arthur (April), 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, sisters Lil (Doug) Dunsmore, Sharlene (Ken) Boychuk, Jean (Al) Hogabaum and brothers Doug (Wendy) Peterson, Andy Peterson and Phil Peterson

Edward Murray Paul, 85, of Blind Bay, BC passed away peacefully on January 6, 2022 at Shuswap Lake General Hospital.
Ed aka “Shuswap Ed” was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to the late John Paul and Matilda Paul (nee Boutilier) on January 20, 1936.
Survived by his beloved wife, Linda Paul (nee Treece), loving father to Cary Graff (Greg, Vernon, BC) and Christopher (Anna, Tsawwassen, BC). Cherished grandfather to Kevin Graff (Katie, Ottawa, ON) and Jamie Graff (London, ON). Grandfather to Christopher Bronswyk (Alison, Chilliwack, BC), Kay-Lynn Dougherty (Barret, Quesnel, BC). Great-grandfather to Danica Bruno and Freya Dougherty.
Ed began his career at Island Airlines in Campbell River, BC in the early 60’s before moving his family to Richmond, BC. Numerous flying jobs kept Ed doing what he loved the most – flying. One job that was most influential for Ed was with West Coast Transmission flying a Falcon 20 under the direction of Mr. Hal O’Keefe.
The early 80’s brought Ed to BC Telephone Company and the beginning of BC Tel Flight Operations. Throughout the years with Ed’s dedication, persistence and knowledge of the business aircraft industry, it has grown to what it is today. From flying the Beaver to the Citation 10, Ed was at the helm.
In 1991, Ed put an indelible mark on the Vancouver Airport by securing 12 acres of prime airport land from Transport Canada to construct an FBO which is known today as Signature Flight Support. Ed’s career involvement also included BC Aviation Council, Airshow Canada and serving as Chairman of Canadian Business Aircraft Association.
Retirement brought Ed to Blind Bay, BC. He loved to play golf, spend summers backpacking with his grandsons, Geocaching and creating woodworking treasures in his workshop. A “bucket list” camping trip to the Yukon and Arctic Ocean in 2018 with his son-in-law and grandsons was definitely a highlight.
Ed will forever be remembered by his generosity and his kind heart.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring in Blind Bay, BC. An additional Celebration of Life will be held in the spring in the Vancouver area. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to Shuswap Lake General Hospital.

Sadly, on December 28, 2021, Ken passed at his home in Salmon Arm, BC. He was 84 years old.
Ken was born in Estavan, SK on October 4, 1937, to Joseph and Mary Jenish. At a young age, Ken along with his parents, twin brother Wayne, brother Ron and sister Cathy moved to Coquitlam, BC. There he met the love of his life, Diane. They married in 1963 and had two daughters, Wendy (Rick) and Jenny (Allen). In 1972, their spirit of adventure brought them upcountry to live in a log house in the wilderness of Clearwater, where Ken enjoyed his dune buggy, sledding, boating, and fishing. In 1991, Ken and Diane moved to Salmon Arm. Ken had an impressive career constructing many homes, schools, health centres, cabins and house boats and he was always whistling a tune as he worked. Ken was a fun man, who always had a smile or joke for whoever he met. He was so proud of his grandchildren David, Mitchell, Adam and Tamara and particularly taken by the newest addition to the family, his great grandchild Ryker.
Ken was a loved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He will be missed. It was Ken’s desire to not have a funeral service.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Vandergugten. Mary was born in Delfzijl, The Netherlands. She was the second of ten children born to Peiter and Anje Huttema. She immigrated to Coaldale, Alberta with her family in 1951. Soon after they moved to Burnaby, BC where Mary met Neal at the age of 17. They married on August 31, 1956 and were blessed with 65 years of marriage.
Mary passed away and entered into heavenly glory at the age of 87 years in Salmon Arm, BC, and so we also rejoice that she has been relieved from her earthly suffering. She is survived by her loving husband Neal who gives thanks to God for allowing him a most wonderful wife of 65 years; 4 children Rick (Ludi), Pete (Celia), Larry (Lynn), Marion (Rob) De Boersap; 16 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kristin (2018).
Mom is best remembered for her love of Jesus and her family, her hospitality and her joyous nature. Singing and humming were her constant companions as well as her boundless energy to serve others. She loved to bake, cook and host family and friends in her home. Her hands were endlessly busy, sewing, crafting, crocheting, and knitting (baby blankets, socks, slippers, dish cloths, dish towels) creations for her loved ones. Mom spent hours volunteering her time for her church, Christian schools, shut ins, and many other worthy causes.
She loved her family deeply and was our greatest prayer warrior. She will be greatly missed by all.
The family would like to thank all the health care workers who so lovingly cared for Mom in her illness and last days.

He is survived by the love of his life wife Angela and companion Bella, brothers Gary (Lana) Goodman, Robert (Dorthe), Darryl, Clayton (Lori), sister Lori and many nieces and nephews as well as his large extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Ina and Bev, sister Carolyn and nephew Thomas.
Doug’s passions were hunting, fishing, family, stockcar racing and his love of the big open road on his motorcycle Big Blue with Angela by his side. He will ride the open road forever.

In loving memory of
Hugh Dawson Hatchard of Salmon Arm passed away on December 10, 2021 after suffering a stroke at home. Hugh was born on June 16, 1937, the second son of Burrell and Mary Hatchard, in Elk Point, Alberta. From an early age, Hugh enjoyed solitude, nature and tough sports like hockey, boxing and rodeo. He worked in northern BC and the Yukon, staking claims for mining companies, before switching to electrical work in Merritt and Fort St. John in the 60s. Hugh could fix almost anything and loved animals big and small.
In 1996, Hugh retired to the Salmon Arm area with his partner Helen, where they enjoyed many years of fun and adventures with neighbours, family and friends.
Hugh is survived by his loving partner, Helen, daughters Dawn of Kelowna and Carmen of Mile 108, as well as son Brooke. He also leaves behind one grandson, Marlon, and six step-grandchildren, as well as brothers Rex (Shelley) and Dean of McBride. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, brother Shelby, sister Roma, and infant son, Gene.
To use one of Hugh’s favourite words, on December 10, 2021 he went “padoink”. We will miss him always.

Phyllis quietly passed away in Salmon Arm, December 9, 2021, at age 92. She was born in Travers, Alberta in 1929 to Alvin and Belle Greenman.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ray, in 2015, her sisters Evelyn, Lucille, Fern, Dora, Ruth, Audrey, Myrtle, brother Gordon and grandson Terry.
She is survived by her sister Joyce and brother Glen, children Stanley (Leila), Lavonne (Alfred), Dale (Rose); 6 grandchildren- Jolaine (Brian), Tammy (Miles), Pamela (Mike), Candice (Claude), Chris (Michele), Lisa (Danny); 9 great-grandchildren Tonisha, Ahren, Emalynn, Jaxon, Eliana, Nicole, Jayden, Connor and Maxwell.
She might best be remembered for her outstanding hospitality-all across Canada her chocolate cake is sought after, along with her pancakes with ice cream and strawberries!
Her greatest love and focus of life was for Jehovah her God. She enjoyed working with her Ray in this ministry and she had the pleasure of assisting many come to know God.
Phyllis loved people and they loved her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services to take place on December 18 at 1:00PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Salmon Arm, BC
James Arthur Grahn passed away peacefully at his home in Blind Bay, BC on December 5, 2021 at 11:45AM at the age of 72 years. He was born in Camrose, AB on December 23, 1948.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 50 years Barbara Grahn, his daughters Kristin Thompson, Julie Petersen (Seth), Rachel Stelnicki (Nathan) and Katherine as well as his nine grandchildren, Nicholas, Emily, Leila, Olivia, Claire, Greyson, Jon, Wesley, and Mabel. He is predeceased by his son Timothy Grahn, infant twin grandchildren, Aaron and Noelle, his brother Terry and both his parents, Arthur and Ida Grahn.
James was a loving husband, father and grandfather who spent his life providing for and loving his family. He was instrumental in making sure his family got to see many parts of Canada and the United States and beyond. Camping, hiking, biking, birding, cruising, golfing, and endless drives in the countryside were some of his favourite things to do. He was a self-taught residential builder and developer, real estate salesman and RCMP officer. James was a kind and fun loving person who always enjoyed visiting with friends, family and even strangers. He spent many hours chatting with strangers at the Costco food court. He loved to travel and was able to see much of the world.
He now has travelled to his final resting spot and is in the arms of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. May he rest in peace.
Funeral services to take place on December 18 at 1:00PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Salmon Arm, BC. Internment to be in rural Alberta at a later date.
Winslow, Douglas Alexander “Doug”

at the age of 83 years:
Douglas Alexander Winslow, 83 years old, passed away on Dec. 4, 2021 from Parkinson and Lewy Body Syndrome.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Audrey and son Robert and Crisanta, daughter Patti and Paul, son John and Laurissa, Patrick and Penny as well as 9 grandchildren and many friends and family.
Doug was very active in horseshoes, curling and cribbage. Doug worked for the School District for 28 years.
Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson Society of BC, Parkinson.bc.ca

Jack passed away in Salmon Arm, BC at the age of 78.
Jack was born in Red Deer, AB. His family moved to Edmonton and then to Calgary. Jack was in the first graduating class of William Aberhart High School in 1961.
Jack and Leslie (Lester) were married in 1970. Jack worked in the oil and gas industry in Calgary and Oklahoma City. The family returned to British Columbia and entered the tourism industry as part of the family business in 1984. In 2001, Jack and Lester retired to White Lake where Jack became a very active member of the community. He was the President of the White Lake Recreational Society, a member of the Area C Parks Commission, White Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Shifting Saddles 4H Club. Jack will be remembered for his jokes and always having a good story to tell. We will forever remember… Here’s “My Card”.
Jack is survived by his wife Lester of 51 years, his daughters Jodi (Todd) and Patti-Jo (Kevin), his granddaughter Makayla, step-grandchildren Larissa, Bryce, Alexis, Graison, and his brother Phil (Anita), sister Susan (Rusty) and nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his parents John and Doris McInally.

Family and friends will celebrate Cris’ life at North Shuswap Christian Fellowship Church, Butters Rd, Scotch Creek, BC. Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. COVID-19 Protocols.
Cris was born October 8th, 1948 in Wawa Ontario to Robert Beland & Valma Wootton. Later on, Cris would make Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario the place to call home & raise her family. She entered the arms of her loving Saviour and Lord Jesus on November 29th, 2021 after a short-lived battle with COVID. She is survived by her Husband, soulmate and love of her life, Randy, her two daughters that admired her love for Jesus, Debbie Lunden (Tim) and Lisa Burgess. She was the Stepmom and friend to Cheri Schryer (Derek Balaux), pre-deceased by Brian Schryer.
Cris also leaves behind her siblings Dave Wooton (Nancy), Diane Siegwart (Don), Herb Miller (Judy), pre-deceased by brothers Ray Beland and Chuck Miller. Much loved Grandma to Andrew, Taylor and Danica Burgess (Ryan), Jessica Collings, Brandon & Kyle McCarthy, Aiden, Cody and Samuel Balaux and Great Grandma to Claire, Amelia, Zoe, Anaise, Adalaide, Zachary, Nolan and Alivia. Cris is also survived by numerous Nieces & Nephews from near & far, many friends, acquaintances that she has met at various Churches that she & Randy attended over the years.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Doctors, Nurses, all Staff at the Salmon Arm Hospital who worked tirelessly to keep Cris comfortable. Your kindness, compassion, caring and nurturing does not go unnoticed.

Puchelak, Tadeusz “Ted”

It is with saddened hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Tadeusz “Ted, Teddy” Puchelak at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital in Salmon Arm, BC on November 27, 2021 at the age of 78 years. For the immediate family, a private funeral and burial will be held on Dec. 11, 2021.
Born in Poland in 1943, he later immigrated to Canada at the age of 15 in 1958 to Rosefield, SK where he helped his aunt and uncle on their farm for the next several years. Through a friend in Poland, he was able to connect with a girl who collected stamps. They became pen pals and traded stamps with each other. After awhile Ted was intrigued to meet this lovely woman named Maria and thus he travelled to Poland in 1966. Ted and Maria were married in November 1966 and started their lives as a young couple in southern Saskatchewan. Their first daughter Pamela was born in Swift Current, SK in 1969. Ted was busy constructing houses in Saskatchewan and Alberta at that time. In 1970, the young family moved to Cedar Heights, BC where Ted got a job at the local lumber mill at Adam’s Lake now known as Interfor. The family expanded in BC with the addition of Tanya (born in 1971) and the twins Jennifer and Jeff in 1980. Ted worked for the mill for 36 years before retiring from it in 2006. He had numerous hobbies during his working years and in retirement including woodworking, being a very active member of the Vernon Pigeon and Poultry club, enjoying coffee times with friends at the local restaurants and at home as well as doing many gardening and wood working projects around the house. He especially enjoyed trips to Europe to visit family and friends on several occasions.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Maria, of Sorrento, BC, daughter Pamela (Mark) of Ottawa, ON, daughter Tanya of Sorrento, BC, daughter Jennifer of Vancouver, BC, son Jeff (Courtney) of Kamloops, BC and grandchildren Ben, Charlee and Josephine. Ted also leaves behind sister Helen of Poland and brother Jan (Maria) of Germany, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents Jozef and Maria Puchelak, as well as two sisters, Czesia and Wisia, in Poland.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. Ted has been described as an exceptional man, a good friend as well as being generous, humorous, very honest and full of energy with a twinkle in his eye. He was one of a kind and will always be remembered by anyone who had the privilege to know him. May God bless him eternally and provide Ted with an abundance of heavenly projects.

Recently, my mom passed away suddenly in Palm Springs, California. My dad was devastated with grief, but he had some amazing friends nearby who helped him thru the process.
In order to start that process, they needed the name of a funeral service in Salmon Arm that the people in the states could be in contact with about the handling of the remains. One of the friends recommended Fischer's Funeral Services, so they were called and They were amazing..they handled all the paperwork and kept in close contact with both the funeral homes and the people dealing with certificates and such. They will also help the spouse with some paperwork regarding taxes if necessary.
When my father and I went to see them regarding my mother's wishes, they were so accommodating and did not hesitate to do everything they could to make this as pleasant as they possibly could. We even changed our minds a few times about things at the last minute, and they made it all happen just the way we wanted.
My mother didn't have the usual service and it was the best choice we could have made for her and Fischer's did everything to make the day absolutely beautiful from the room setup to the layout of the flowers and urn. They also supplied all the little stuff that you don't even think about in a time like that( paper plates, cutlery, coffee, tea, etc...) and it took a giant load off of my mind so I could concentrate on making this the best send off I could for my mom and for that, I will be forever grateful.
I am quite bad to judge how much food and such to get for events , we had way, way too much leftover, but I felt happy about it because I knew it wouldn't go to waste. It gets donated to the local Women's shelter and so I feel that even though my mom is gone, she is still giving to others, and that is the best feeling.
I was amazed at the cost of the service. I have heard horror stories about the thousands and thousands of dollars it can cost and I was concerned because of the situation in dealing with the US that the cost would be one of those stories, but that was the most reasonable cost I have ever seen, and a house will not have to be mortgaged to pay for it ... 😊
