Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 22 years, Doreen; son John Kirby (Melanie); daughter Gillian Groening (Jody); step-son Tim Herrod (Sharla); step-daughter Angela Hosni; grandchildren Randy, Jaqueline and Karlee Kirby; Evan Groening; Jasmine Dozlaw (Mark), Kaeden, Asher, Gabrielle and Sophie Herrod; Brad Loewen and Reda and Samy Hosni. Predeceased by his father John Stanley Kirby, his mother Audrey Knutson, father-in-law Frank Krajci and nephew Jeffrey Tessier.
This list only begins to capture the all the wonders that Jack was. Jack was a devoted and loving husband, wonderful father/step-father, doting grandfather/step-grandfather, avid and adventurous traveller, enthusiastic camper, fisherman, boater and snorkeler, inspiring mentor, and trusted friend. Jack was an honest and friendly man with an amazing work ethic, which he passed down to the next generation. To Jack, a handshake was a contract or a job well done.
Jack began his working career when he was in high school and living in Regina, SK, pumping fuel at an Esso service station for Fred Hughes. He quickly discovered his interest in the fuel industry and at 18 acquired his Class 1 driver’s license which he put to good use for the next 55 years. An entrepreneur from a young age, Jack owned and operated successful fuel trucking companies in Saskatchewan and British Columbia, before finding his true calling, Okanagan Hot Shot Enterprises, delivering mostly boats and sawmill equipment throughout Canada and the US. He loved the freedom of the road, where he enjoyed meeting and making new customers and friends from all walks of life, as well as stopping in to visit people he knew and often taking them on a Hot Shot deliveries with him. He truly lived up to his nickname “Gypsy Jack”.  With his incredibly positive disposition and huge smile, he drew friends to him like a magnet. Everywhere Jack went, in every province, state and country, he knew many, many people and remembered every single one of them with fondness until his passing.
A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at 50 Tomkinson Road, Grindrod, BC. All welcome.

Celebration Of Life – September 28, 2019, 5 PM, 5th Avenue Senior Activity Center, 170-5th Avenue SE, Salmon Arm.
Cowboy boots and hats, if ya got ‘em, wear ‘em!  If you drive an oldie but goodie, bring it on down!

Born James Gordon Deverick in Fresno, California, passed peacefully at home in Salmon Arm with his wife Cynthia at his side at the age of 68 years, due to complications of COPD and Emphysema.
Jim is survived by his wife Cynthia Merrell, his first wife Shelley Woody Huband, daughter Andrea Armour (Tyler), son Steven Perme (Shannon), son Deverick “Shadow” Clingwall, and step-daughter Brandi Anderson (Ryan); Sisters:  Linda (nee Deverick) Holland, Catherine (nee Perme) Cook (Gord), Trisha Cobb (Mike).  Jim also leaves five grandchildren, Logan and Linden Armour of Blind Bay, Brianna and Carter of Airdrie, Alberta, and Jill Anderson of San Diego, California and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim arrived in Princeton, British Columbia at the age of 21, taking work in a sawmill initially to survive.  Life carried on, getting married, becoming a rancher for this cowboy at heart and starting a family.  As with all families, changes come. Eventually Jim’s early years in auto mechanics served him well when he found himself back in that field in various locations in BC, until he landed at Salmon Arm GM, where he decided to stay and made Salmon Arm his final home.
Jim was able to remain at home as were his final wishes which would not have been possible without the assistance and guidance of the palliative care team of nurses (Allison, Laura and Katherine) at Community Care and Drs. Keith and Laura Hepburn. Thank you all.

Bodnar, Gisela Klara

March 23, 1923 – July 12, 2019
at the age of 96 years

Gisela Klara Bodnar passed away peacefully on July 12, 2019 at Mount Ida Mews in Salmon Arm at the age of 96. Gisela was predeceased by her son, George Bodnar. She is survived by her brother Eckbert Goldmann, of Germany.
She was born in Berlin in 1923. Gisela worked as a nurse’s aide during WWII then immigrated to Canada in 1950 with her family.
She was a strong, independent and exceedingly competent person who enjoyed an adventurous life and was an inspiration to others. She worked as an independent photographer, home economics teacher and operated the Silver Creek Guest Ranch.
Of her passions in life, animals, especially dogs and horses, and the great outdoors, stand out. Many a mountain trail ride on horseback took place in Alberta and BC.  She was a member of the Alpine Club striving to climb ever higher for the best views.
Not one to shy away from adventure or a challenge, she learned to ride a motorcycle at the age of 75 and is remembered by a close friend for the speed with which she rode.  She will also be remembered fondly as an avid gardener, keen bridge and cribbage competitor and winner of many scrabble games.  Living close to the Senior’s Activity Centre, it became like a second home to her and this was where she enjoyed her weekday lunches.
Gisela lived her life in gratitude and is remembered to have said: “Salmon Arm was the best place in the world to live. I never wanted to leave as we have everything here, mountains, rivers, trees, beauty.”
Respecting Gisela’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral.

Strauch, Annette Eliza

August 14, 1936 – May 1, 2019
at the age of 82 years

Annette passed peacefully in her sleep at Mt. Ida Mews where she spent her last two years.  Although Mom’s frail little body gave out, her mind was sharp, never loosing her sense of humour.  She met her husband Clarence and married September 5, 1953.  In 1954, they welcomed their son Brian (Betty), 1956 daughter Beverley (Rick Iglesias) and 1961 daughter Lorna (Jim Douglas).  In 1958 with two small children, they made the journey to the Chase Creek Valley where they homesteaded a quarter section of land, the valley they would never leave.   Mom was a fabulous cook, well known for her apple pies and she marvelled people with her home canning.  The coffee pot was always on and no one left the table without a homemade goodie.  She worked 25 years for Skimikin Nursery, but a dedicated “farmer’s wife” was her calling.  Dinner was always on the table and there was always an extra chair in case someone stopped by unexpectedly.  In 1965 at the tender age of 28, mom faced the challenge of breast cancer and a life-threatening operation.  She spent 3 months receiving cobalt treatments in Vancouver, but as she said, “She fought to live for her young children”.   A 54 year survivor, she was the last BC breast cancer survivor from 1965.  The word “Cancer” took its toll on mom and in later years anxiety crept in making it difficult for her to carry on.  When she lost her lifelong spouse Clarence in 2011, she never returned to the Chase Creek Valley.  She often mentioned “life was lonely” and as she spent her last 3 years in a wheelchair, she looked forward to Brian bringing “her” bus (as she would call it) to go on day excursions.  Family was her everything, but if she received a visit from anyone who would take the time to come see her, she was elated.   Survived by 3 children, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.  As requested by Mom, there will be no funeral services, her ashes be spread on the family 7 acres beside her husband.  Rest in peace mom, you are no longer in pain.

Sim, William James

June 21, 1925 – July 4, 2019
at the age of 94 years

A Celebration of his life will take place at the Okanagan Science Centre, Sunday, September 15, 1:00 pm, Polson Park, Vernon, BC

Bill is survived by his children, Rick Sim (Claire), Roxi Hermsen (Tony), Randy Sim (Nancy), Russ Sim, his grandsons Bram Hermsen (Kaydin), Bryan Sim (Amanda), Kevin Sim, Matthew Sheer (Jesse), his granddaughter Nicole Wilson (Jamie), great grandchildren Tristan, Claire and Kai Hermsen and Kayla and Emily Wilson, brothers Ron and Alister Sim, sister Winnie Thompson, many nephews and nieces, and great nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (1999) and grandson Shea Hermsen (1996).
Bill was a people person, a world traveller and member of the Knights of Pythias. He loved kids and inspired many through coaching baseball and soccer, leading cubs and scouts, developing an apprenticeship program for electricians and volunteering for organizations like the Meraloma Rugby club.  After a move from Vancouver to Vernon BC and retirement, Bill decided he would like to start a science centre.
Tributes to Bill from Darren Handschuh and Jim Swingle offered the following words. “The beloved founder of the Okanagan Science Centre passed away; he had just turned 94. The vision of the centre was planted when he was a young man living in Vancouver. As a Scout leader, he took 120 young people to the Seattle Science Centre. Sim was impressed at how much an impact the centre had on the children and an idea was born.  Always humble, Sim deflected the success of the centre from himself to the many volunteers and board members who have kept the OSC going over the years, and to Bruce Aikenhead, one of the top space engineers in Canada.”  DH
“Bill had a vision. He wanted science accessible to everyone.  28 years ago, the Science Centre was a room in the basement of the old Tolko building.  Bill and those other dedicated volunteers, including Bill’s wife Marg, worked hard and together they grew that vision.  A few years later the centre moved out of the basement and into our current building, a former schoolhouse in Polson Park.  The Okanagan Science Centre has grown to host over 25,000 visitors with planetarium shows, dinosaurs, and a range of exhibits.  Tourists and visitors come from around the world to visit the Science Centre in a relatively small town in the north Okanagan, Bill dreamed of science education for all kids, to create a better world.  Located in Vernon, because this is where he lived, he put in the hard work to make his vision a reality.” JS
In his last years he lived, close to family, at the Lakeside Manor where he was the life of the party, dressing up for all occasions and dancing with all the ladies at mix and mingle, and was a wonderful ambassador welcoming many new residents. Healthy to the end, he wore the rubber tips off his walking sticks by walking all over Salmon Arm.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the Okanagan Science Centre in memory of Bill, its founder and whose dream and vision it was that became reality.  http://www.okscience.ca/
A Celebration of his life will take place at the Okanagan Science Centre, Sunday, September 15 at 1pm, Polson Park, Vernon, BC

Friesen, William “Bill” George

January 11, 1934 – May 31, 2019
at the age of 85 years

There will be a celebration of Bill’s Life on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at the Shuswap Community Church at 2:00 pm

The Family of William George Friesen (Bill) are heartbroken to announce his passing in the early morning hours of May 31, 2019, at Shuswap Lake General Hospital.
Bill Friesen was born on January 11, 1934 in Speers, Saskatchewan, the third youngest of nine children. He moved to Mission BC as a young boy with his family. At the age of 5 he had an accident playing with his cousin which caused a lifelong hip injury that he silently suffered with all his life. In the late 1940s Bill began his lifelong career with Canada Safeway. In 1950 he met Clare Pankratz and after dating for five years they married in 1955 and were just three weeks shy of their 64th wedding anniversary. Between 1959 and 1963 they had four children, the youngest being a set of twins. When the twins were just 18 months old in October 1965 the family moved to Hamburg Germany, where Bill went over with Canada Safeway to open the Safeway stores there. The family lived there for almost 2 years and then moved back to Canada and settled in Burnaby where Bill continued a very successful career with Safeway and where their children were raised. Bill was known to be strict but always fair and kind, never forgetting a name or a face. Upon early retirement Bill and Clare moved to Armstrong and settled there, having fallen in love with that area during a one-year transfer in his career. They built a new house, travelled extensively and became grandparents to six grandchildren, who along with his yard work were always his passion. In later years they moved to Salmon arm as his hip struggles kept him from being as physically active as he would’ve liked. He stayed active however in every other area of his life, he never forgot a birthday, and he was diligent at keeping in touch with family and friends via email, phone calls, birthday cards etc. He always remained very active with their local church even though he was immobile for the last five years of his life. His love and devotion to his wife is a tender example that he set for his family, right up to his last evening on earth from his hospital bed. His life and dedication to his Saviour and his wife and family and friends will not be forgotten. He is now with his Heavenly Father and free from all pain, and for that we are so thankful.
He was predeceased by his son Vincent Ross Friesen on May 13, 2011.
Left to mourn him are his wife of almost 64 years Clare FrIesen, daughter Dayle Kiesenwetter (Tom), daughter in law Debbie Friesen (Ross 1961 – 2011), son Craig Friesen (Laurisa), daughter Merle Cumbers (Ray), and his beloved grandchildren Jeffrey, Ashley, Jaclyn , Jamie, Cole and Derek.
Our family wishes to thank and express our gratitude to Dr. Goldberg and the amazing nursing staff on the fourth floor at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, who diligently, with smiles did their sometimes extremely difficult jobs.
There will be a celebration of Bill’s Life on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at the Shuswap Community Church at 2:00 pm

Cropper, Kathryn Gail

July 26, 1946 – April 25, 2019
at the age of 72 years

I was about to say “on April 25th I lost my best friend”. But I didn’t, I know where she is and she took a big piece of my heart with her. She lived a lot longer than the medical community expected; as at age forty she was told she wouldn’t live another five years.

In the garden of life she always had a very hard row to hoe. But with her dogged determination hoe it she did; and in her 72nd year her deteriorating heart gave up the struggle. I envision her laying down her hoe, sitting at the end of the row with Jesus and discussing life in the garden with Him. Then she smiled, closed her eyes and fell asleep in His arms.

Needless to say her husband of 44 years, Wayne will truly miss Kathryn his ‘Queen of Hearts’. Her friends and family too. Especially her older sister (me) and younger brother Dan.

Sleep soundly dear sister, sleep sound. Miss you terribly – Love you deeply ~ Lynne ~

Hughes, Harold Allen

February 26, 1931 – March 29, 2019
at the age of 88 years

While Hal was in palliative care at Bastion, a young care worker came in to see him.  She smiled at an elderly, old man coming to the end of his journey.
I looked at him and saw a young teenager in Winnipeg, shoveling snow off the Assiniboine River.  He and his friends cleaned it so they could speed skate on the track they made.
I saw a hard working, newly married man driving the long lonely roads of Manitoba selling Carnation Milk coming home late Friday night, too tired to play with his son Kelly.
I saw a man sailing on English Bay with his new wife Glenda, face to the sun and wind at his back.
Later moving to Salmon Arm to retire and make new friends, be they young children or grown men and women.
Always his love of music could be heard playing at home with friends and family.
Yes, young people see an old man but for me the wrinkles, brown spots and the slowing of movement were just signs of a life well lived.
I see you everyday and always will my love.

Mannes, “Lenie” Helena Jannetje

April 17, 1936 – March 29, 2019
at the age of 82 years

It is with breaking hearts that we announce the passing of the gentle soul of our wife, mother and grandmother, Lenie Mannes.
Born in Rotterdam, Holland, she survived the War and immigrated to Canada three times:  the first time when she was 17, the second time five years later, and once more, the third and last time, to live for the rest of her life in her beloved land of mountains.
In 1985, after the death of her husband, Lenie was introduced to Auke (Gus) Mannes through his sister, Henja.  They held hands and never let go.  Soon after they married and started a hobby farm in Fort Langley, wrangling the heifers and corralling the chickens.  Lenie loved all animals and gave a home to many rescue dogs and cats from the SPCA over the years.
In 1992 Lenie and Gus bought an acreage and renovated their dream home on Grandview Bench, living there for 25 years until moving closer to Salmon Arm in 2017.
In between Lenie and Gus had many adventures, travelling across Canada twice by RV, the last time a three-month trip they thoroughly enjoyed, as well as trips to Alaska and Inuvik.  Both members of the Antique Car Club, they had lots of fun going to car meets and outings with the club.
Lenie leaves behind her loving husband of 34 years, Auke (Gus) Mannes, Sr., three daughters Lori Pickering, Cindy Rudolph and Leslie Bowling, stepchildren, Diana Mannes and Gus Mannes, Jr.,  and grandchildren Eric Bowling, Meagan Bowling, and Ashley Rosenberger, and great-grandson Rylan Bowling, step-grandchildren Christopher Mannes, Audrey Crouser, and step-grandchildren, Auke Crouser and Owain Crouser.
Lenie taught us about love, generosity, and acceptance.  She will live in our hearts forever.
The family would like to especially thank the palliative care nursing team at Shuswap General Hospital for their compassionate and professional care.  In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Shuswap Hospital Foundation, Shuswap Hospice Society or the SPCA.

SHUSWAP SEASONS
Shuswap, sweet land of shining lake and sun,
Where trees in spring hold blossoms to the sky,
Where melting waters, rippling, lakeward run,
And flights of geese o’erhead lift spirits high.
Then, by the lake, the redwing calls resound,
And sun-warmed people go their summer ways.
on orchard branches, rip’ning fruits abound,
And pink-mauve sunsets end the golden days.
In autumn, willows weep for summer’s close.
The gentle days wind down, leaves flame and fall.
The Lake of Shimmering Waters finds repose,
And wintry trees rise from their snow pall.
But nature’s cycle turns, this dear green place
Will wake anew beneath spring’s smiling face.

John and Irene had the following words they wished to share:  “We have loved each other since the day we met and have had very many good friends and travelled to many interesting places.  We also love the same music, especially classical.  All in all, we’ve had a wonderful life and would like to thank all our dear friends for helping us on our way.”  John & Irene Rodger.
Special thanks to the staff at Piccadilly Care Centre for their outstanding kind and compassionate care of both Irene and John and for enabling them to reside together until John’s passing.  At Irene’s request, no service will be held.  If desired, memorial donations, may be made in Irene’s memory to the Shuswap Hospital Foundation, Box 265, Salmon Arm, BC, V1E 4N3, or to the local branch of the SPCA.

at the age of 57 years

A celebration of Mark’s life will be held in Tappen, BC at Herald Park, August 17, 2019 at 1:00 pm

It is with heavy hearts we announce the the sudden and unexpected passing of Mark at home with Angel at his side.
Mark grew up in the Cariboo and his younger years were spent on Box Hill. This is where Mark started honing his craft in the carpentry arena, and striving for perfection. Dad would settle for nothing less.  Mark, dad and his brothers built and put the shake roof on the family home on the hill. Mark and dad then roofed the shakes on the now Smith Antiques in Lone Butte.
Mark attended the one room school at Flying U on Green Lake until the school closed. Then attended Lone Butte school until it closed, on to the Junior high school in 100 Mile House. He also attended college in Abbotsford for his upgrading to grade 12.
Mark’s interest in mechanics and auto body work started when he was a kid on the hill, he would find these old cars and trucks, score them for next to nothing, and dream of getting them restored. He tinkered on these for years, his dream was realized when he attended college in Kelowna and earned his certificate in Auto-Body Repair. He finished high in his class and won financial awards for his work.  At the time of his passing, Mark was restoring his antique dream car in his shop in Tappen.
Mark held a variety of jobs over the years. Cooking in a Greek restaurant, silver culture, mill labourer, working in the boat building industry, auto body repair, painter, many private jobs in carpentry and auto mechanics field. He said his best and last job was working for Dimps. On a daily basis she voiced her appreciation for the work he did.
Mark enjoyed riding his motorcycles, going to stock car races, participating to crash to pass races, golfing, fishing, hunting, playing ball and always BSing over a cup of coffee with all he knew.
Having no children of his own, Mark focused his attention on his nieces and nephews and his greats.  His discipline with them will always be remembered, never once having to raise his voice to have them listen intently. He always had a listening ear and most certainly let them know when he felt they were straying down the wrong path.
Mark is predeceased by his parents, Merritt and Angelina Leask, stepmom Donna Stewart, sister Marcy Ann, niece Taylor and his best friends, Chicko, Bandit, Taz , Cruiser and Star. He is survived by his brothers, Michael (Crystal), Wayne (Bonnie), Shawn (Christina), James, His sister Michele (Don) many nieces and nephews and greats, and his dog Angel.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved, Robert(Alvin)Hall at the age of 88. On Monday, March 18 as the sun was rising, our beloved went to sleep peacefully surrounded by his family. Alvin was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa, he was the pillar of our family and our loss is palpable.

Alvin was born on August 8, 1930 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He ventured out to BC as a young man and found work in Vancouver at Magregor’s Warehouse and later at Canada Starch in Burnaby. Alvin enjoyed traveling, fishing, woodworking, birds, gardening, tinkering on cars and reading books, but he got the most enjoyment out of spending time with his family, including his pets, and telling stories from his younger years. Alvin was also Santa at the Centenoka Mall for many years and he always got so much joy from making the little ones smile.

Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Audrey, his 4 children, Lavern Stoesz, Kerry Hall, Garth (Val) Hall, Belinda (Jamie) Zack, his 7 grandchildren, Tracy Danbrook (Chris McElgunn), Brandi (Josh) Wood, Kristy Hall, Christopher Zack (Chell Bara), Brandon Zack, Cody Zack (Jess Daniels), and Samantha Zack (Francis Thomas) as well as his 13 great grandchildren, Levi and Caden Danbrook, Cohen and Ethan Wood, Savannah L’Heureux and Mackenzie Hall, Taylor, Riley and Dylan Zack, Haidyn Zack, Jaxon Zack, Zoey and James Zack. Lunden, Else

March 26, 1927 – March 3, 2019
at the age of 91 years

Else left us on March 3, 2019 at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Salmon Arm, just 3 weeks shy of her 92nd birthday.
Born in Denmark, March 26, 1927 to Nicoline and Axel Ranch.  Her parents traveled via ship to Canada from Denmark in about 1929, when Else was barely two and her sister Greta was four.
Else was predeceased by her husband Odin, daughter Susan, grandson Marlin, and brother Paul.
She is survived by sons Randy (Nella) and Tim (Deb), daughter Zara, grandson Aaron – grand daughters,Allison, Krystal and Melody. great grand children, Kyle, Dillon and Derek, several young great-great grandchildren, as well as two sisters Greta Wiffin in Florida and Miriam Swift, in Toronto, Ontario, with nieces and nephews around Canada and the USA too.
Else married Odin Lunden at the young age of 19 years, travelling from city of Hamilton, Ontario to the Northern town of Peace River, Alberta.   They had met in Hamilton when Odin was just out of the army, having served in WWII.
They lived on his farm in the Peace River area, located down the Weberville Road. There she experienced the many joys and hardships life had to offer people struggling to make a living in the county.  A city girl learning to be a farmer’s wife was very difficult for her at first.  She had nothing but praise and gratitude for the experienced country farm women who helped her learn and cope with the life.  Odin had a standing joke, that the first bread she baked was so hard, they used it as a foundation for the addition to the farm house they built.
She was an exceptionally talented artist, poet, writer, seamstress, musician and singer, as well as a very smart business woman. (Well read and educated in the East) Odin was very proud of her when she could fill in their own farm tax forms, understanding the legal side of things.  She also became an exceptionally good cook.  Her artistic talents extended to decorating many, many beautiful unique wedding cakes for friends and neighbours over the years.
Else and her husband Odin moved to the Okanagan BC, in 1991 for the warmer climate. Odin passed over in 2002 and Else continued to live in the area, her last two years at the very comfortable modern independent living for seniors, Lakeside Manor, Salmon Arm, BC.

An Ode to Grandma

Grandma, on a winter’s day, milked the cows and fed them hay, hitched the mule,
drove the kids to school…did a washing, mopped the floors, washed the windows and

did some chores…

Cooked a dish of home-dried fruit, pressed her husband’s Sunday suit…
swept the parlor, made the bed, baked a dozen loaves of bread…split some

firewood and lugged it in, enough to fill the kitchen bin…

Cleaned the lamps and put in oil, stewed some apples before they spoiled…
churned the butter, baked a cake, then exclaimed, “For goodness sake!” when the
calves ran from the pen, and chased them all back in again…

Gathered eggs and locked the stable, back to the house and set the table…
cooked a supper that was delicious, then washed and dried all the dirty dishes…
fed the cat and sprinkled clothes, mended a basketful of hose…then opened

the organ and began to play:  “When You Come to the End of a Perfect Day…”

A special Thank You goes out to the caring staff at Lakeside Manor for the exceptional care you provided to Mom over the past couple of years.
As per request, there will be no funeral service. Private family internment will follow in Chase, BC. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
