September 25, 1935 – February 20, 2017
at the age of 81 years
Celebration of Life: Sunday, May 28, 2017, 1:00 p.m., Eagle River Golf and Country Club, Sicamous, BC
On February 20, 2017, Alfred (Al) Ackerman passed away at his home, in Sicamous, BC.
Al was born in Erickson, BC on September 25, 1935. He grew up on family farms in Erickson, BC, Mission, BC and Blackfalls, AB. He headed off at a young age to make his way in the world, beginning with road construction and heavy equipment operation in Alberta. While working in the Wetaskiwin, AB area, he met and married Marlene (Krause) on June 20, 1958 and they shared 58 years of life’s adventures together. They had two children, Cindy and Wade. While in Wetaskiwin, Al worked at Pahal Motors as a salesman and later advanced to sales manager. Al, with business partner Ray McIntyre, started and operated a farm equipment dealership. During his Wetaskiwin time, he enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and camping trips with family and friends. Learning to fly and piloting his own airplane was another accomplishment.
In 1974, Al and family moved to Canoe, BC to experience the Shuswap area. Al had brief semi-retirement spent boating, fishing and entertaining visiting family and friends. Then Al and Ray McIntyre, decided a new business venture was in order, they developed an industrial property for a houseboat building enterprise. Next, Al designed and built the Eagle River golf course.
In 1982, Al and Marlene moved to Sicamous and lived at an upstairs suite at the golf course clubhouse until 1988. They then settled in on Rauma Rd, in Sicamous, along the river which became home for Al’s later years. During this time, Al continued with various property development projects in the Sicamous area. Al also took up the sport of golf, which turned into a passion. He loved the challenge of the game and the camaraderie on the course and in the clubhouse. Al and Marlene enjoyed spending many winters as “snowbirds” in the southern United States, travelling by motorhome, exploring and meeting up with friends.
Al’s accomplishments in life were important to him and the relationships made with people along the way were at the centre of his life. Throughout his life, he worked and played hard, tried to get and give a fair deal, his word and handshake mattered. Company was always welcomed – stories and jokes were told, opinions were stated, people were teased, beverages were enjoyed, meals were shared and many hands of cards were dealt, and yes, a few cigarettes were smoked. Some of Al’s favourite things in later life were having coffee with a buddy, pestering Marlene in the kitchen, kicking tires at a dealership, checking up on what was happening around the neighbourhood and town, tinkering in his garage, time outside on the deck appreciating the view and watching a lot of golf. Al had the good fortune of forming many long term friendships. Over the years, neighbours and acquaintances became friends and friends became like family.
So with sadness, along with a wink and a punch in the shoulder, dear Al – Alfie – Dad we say farewell, your strong character and presence will be greatly missed. Your story of a full life, lived large will continue to be told.
Al is survived by his wife Marlene Ackerman, daughter Cindy Bazzana (Ron Pelechaty), son Wade Ackerman and grandson Aaron Bazzana. His sisters Elise (Betty) Wilken, Hilda Campbell, Ann Rylan, Grace Stabeck, sisters in-law Judy Lawton and Gladys Tainsh, brothers in-law Tom Lawton and Ken Titus, along with many nieces and nephews.
Al was predeceased by his parents Anne & Thomas Ackerman, infant children Randy and Todd, sister Joan Zannet, mother and father in-law Amanda & Albert Krause, brothers in-law Andy Wilken, Merle Campbell, Les Rylan, Bill Zannet, Arne Stabeck and Bill Tainsh.
The family wishes to thank friends, special neighbours, Dr. Beech, the staff at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Salmon Arm, BC and the Community Care ladies for all of the support and kindness during the last few months.
A celebration of life will be held in the late spring, when the grass is green.

Johnny was born October 12, 1950 in North Vancouver, BC to Janet and William Manifold. John left us April 26, 2017, aged 66, in Salmon Arm, BC.
Gone before him were his brother Donny, father William and his mother Janet.
Johnny leaves the love-of-his life Patricia; son Marty; daughter Sandy (Blaine); stepchildren Candice, Matthew (Kim) and Christien (Robyn); grandchildren Astrid, Carson, Wyatt, Nate, Zach, Avie, Hayden, Ryder, Silas and Ella. He also leaves brothers Billy (Jean) and Robbie; sisters Barbara (Randy) and Dianne; and several nieces and nephews.
John, after high school, joined the military where he acquired his trade as an electrician. He moved from Surrey to Tappen when his family was young. He was recently a member of the Tappen/Sunnybrae Volunteer Fire Department.
John was definitely “one-of-a-kind”. He always found humour in every situation. It was a great way to cope with life. Whatever it was he managed to get through it by laughing at it and getting you to laugh. He took his fashion cues from no one—feeling “dressed to the nines” in his grey wool long john sweater and work boots.
Most of all, John lived for his time with family and friends; boating and playing on the Shuswap, adventures with is buddies riding their Harleys or hunting; trips with “his Patricia”—canoeing, kayaking, fishing, family camping, Happy Hour around the campfire, good food and watching grandchildren enjoy themselves. He was a kind, compassionate and helpful friend with an infectious laugh and whistle.
Many thanks to the “hands on” girls in Oncology at SLGH—Phyllis, Iris and Jean; our palliative care nurse Janine, our health care support team and first responders for their gentle care. Thanks also to our many wonderful, supportive friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held later this spring. In lieu of gifts or flowers a donation in John’s name to the Tappen/Sunnybrae Fire Department or Shuswap First Responders would be appreciated.
John had a wonderful life and thanks all who made it so.

A loving husband, father, and friend.
He will be missed greatly.
Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

On March 1, 2017 we lost the last of our matriarchs, known to many as “Sophia Loren”. She was the youngest of 13 children born to Nicolas and Cecile Chmelyk. Born in Vilna, Alberta on December 5, 1926, Sophia was raised in an environment without cell phones, electricity, or running water – a place where entertainment was playing guitar, banjo or violin, singing, and playing cards, creating strong bonds with siblings and extended family members. Sophia was raised working hard, and it was these strengths that she passed on to her children in half of their DNA. The other, equally strong half came from George Flondra who she married on March 26, 1943; together, they had four children. Unfortunately their first son (Stanley) died when he was four, but they were blessed with twins Diana and David on May 12, 1946 and later another daughter Elaine on December 14, 1951. Sophia’s life centred around her children, of whom she was extremely proud, and she was rewarded with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. We were lucky to celebrate her 90th birthday in December, and now we all feel a big hole in our hearts.

On February 4, 2017, Paul passed away peacefully in his 92nd year after a short battle with cancer.
He will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
Paul, who was born October 9, 1924 in Finlay, Manitoba, settled with his family in Thunder Bay. In 1940, at the age of 16, Paul being the eldest, left school to help out the family, and began work at the then, Canada Car Manufacturing Plant, building Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft flown in the WWII war effort. In 1942 Paul enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy training in Winnipeg and then with the Pacific Fleet on the West Coast of BC. Upon completion of gunnery training, Paul was posted on a Fairmile Motor Torpedo Boat patrolling the Juan de Fuca Straight on anti-submarine missions. He then volunteered for overseas Motor Torpedo Boat service under Atlantic command and was shipped out to Halifax. Since Paul was trained on 4″ guns and the MTB had only antiaircraft guns, he was not allowed to proceed. He was then sent to Baltimore, Maryland to serve as a gunnery officer on a Corvette Warship. He spent the remainder of the war on Corvette anti-submarine Patrol Duty. They led and escorted convoys moving war supply freighters heading overseas, between New York to Halifax and St. John’s, Newfoundland. While in New York he had the pleasure of seeing Frank Sinatra at Radio City Music Hall.
Discharged in October 1945, Paul then took a carpentry course through the Department of Veterans Affairs. He worked as a carpenter on various construction sites throughout Northwestern Ontario and as a cabinet maker at Port Arthur Shipbuilding. Being the entrepreneur that he was, he formed Cancade Cabinets Ltd., building cabinets, carrying out home renovations and performing light commercial work. The logo on the side of his blue ford 1/2 ton had the picture of a beaver…and that was Paul….busy as a beaver.
Paul married Amelia (Millie) Mesywitch in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) on May 3rd, 1947. Together they built a very successful Cancade Cabinets which expanded to include a paint and hardware store. Millie worked as the bookkeeper, estimator, sales person, and right hand to Paul.
Paul and Millie retired in 1988 and moved to Salmon Arm in January 1996. They traveled in their motor home in Canada and the United States, also travelling with the Shuswap Sunbirds RV Club.
Paul was an avid alpine skier, played golf, and curled in the winter and enjoyed these activities with his many friends in Salmon Arm.
Paul joined Citizens on Patrol and went on his first patrol April 26, 1996 with Millie as his partner. Paul is a Past President of Citizens On Patrol and held positions as a shift coordinator and special events coordinator Millie passed away on June 23, 2003 after spending 57 years together.
Paul was predeceased by his mother and father, his daughter, Barbara Morancy; his sister, Jean Lukaway; as well as brother’s Henry and Maurice. Survived by his son Gregg and his wife Casandra and their children Kipling and Ferguson; daughter Sandra Jondreau and Jim McGregor and their children Michael and Catherine. Paul is also survived by his companion Val Von Matt, his sister, Anna Semenowich, and Brothers Cecil of Victoria, Bobby from Winnipeg. Also survived by many nephews and nieces, grandson Andy Morancy, great grandson Roby Morancy, Al & Carol Morancy and good friends Joan and Gordon Crompton of Thunder Bay.

Please join the family in a celebration of Heinz’s life at North Shuswap Christian Fellowship Church on 4079 Butters Road, Scotch Creek, on Wednesday, February 15th, 2017 at 2 pm.
STEINHILBER, Heinz of Scotch Creek, British Columbia, passed away on February 4th, 2017, just two weeks after celebrating his 91st birthday. He passed peacefully with his family by his side, knowing he was deeply loved.
Heinz is survived by his wife of 37 years, Erika, his son Gert (Jane), his daughter Inge (Ali), four grandchildren, Amin (Janice), Sara (Mauro), Bobak and Andrew, three great-grandsons, Joseph, Samuel and Dante as well as extended family in Canada and Germany. He was predeceased by his first wife, Irmgard in 1973, his parents, Richard and Elisabeth Steinhilber, his sister Anita and his brothers, Ulrich and Erwin.
Heinz was born in Striesen, Poland on January 20th, 1926. As a young boy, he enjoyed the hard work of farm life with his family. In 1944, Heinz was drafted and a survivor of World War II, as well as, being prisoner of war for four and a half years. As a machinist, Heinz moved to Germany to start a new life, married, Irmgard, in 1949 and had two children, Gert and Inge. Heinz, at a young age, committed his life to the Lord, whom he served faithfully his whole life through.
In 1956, Heinz and his family immigrated to Canada and lived for a time in Richmond, British Columbia. Heinz and his family often camped in Shuswap Lake and fell in love with Scotch Creek. In 1973, Heinz tragically lost his wife, Irmgard. Scotch Creek is where Heinz built his life for the past 48 years and called it home.
Heinz was a highly skilled machinist, generous and giving, and always lent a helping hand when needed. Besides being a machinist, he loved being up on his farm and taking care of his cows.
Heinz remarried in Germany in 1979, his loving wife, Erika. Once married, they worked hard to build a home and enjoyed their life together. Heinz and Erika loved to have family and friends visit and no Christmas was complete without family there to celebrate.
Heinz was a mentor to his children and his grandchildren. He taught them a strong work ethic and to appreciate life and each day given. We will dearly miss ‘our one and only’ Opa and cherish the special moments and memories we have of him. Opa will forever live in our hearts.
Erika and family would sincerely like to thank family and friends who attended Heinz’s funeral and for your many cards, beautiful flowers, cooking, phone calls, prayers, love and support at this very sad time.
Your kind expressions of sympathy and thoughtfulness have been overwhelming and a great comfort to us.
Please accept this as our heartfelt thanks.
Heinz will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
God Bless You All.

A Wife, a Mother, a Grandma too
This is the legacy we have from you,
You taught us love and how to fight,
You gave us strength, you gave us might,
A stonger person would be hard to find,
And in your heart, you were always kind.
You fought for us all in one way or another,
Not just as a Wife, not just as a Mother.
For all of us you gave your best,
Now the time has come for you to rest.
So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep,
Your Love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep..
