Fearn, Pamela Margaret

June 9, 1919 – December 23, 2018
at the age of 99 years

June 9, 1919 – December 23, 2018

Celebration of life: in Salmon Arm, Saturday, 12th January 2019 from 2 to 4 pm, Carolyn Herbert, 778.824.0738; in White Rock, Saturday, 19th January 2019 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, Elizabeth Fearn, 778.288.040
Pamela Fearn was born on June 9, 1919 in Montreal, the first child of Margaret and Robert Leigh. Her parents worked their way west across Canada finally settling in beautiful Vancouver overlooking English Bay.
Pam married Wally Fearn and they moved to Lawson Avenue, West Van where she worked for the one man police department. Six years later they homesteaded in Caulfield, an idyllic and eclectic neighbourhood with gravel tracks following deer paths, and brought up three adventurous, non-conforming children, Bob, Rick and Carolyn. They purchased two lots at Brunswick Beach ($50.00 each), and travelled there in a 12 foot putt-putt boat, salvaging enough lumber to build a summer shack.
Pam studied french for years, participated in conversation groups and was a dedicated bridge player. She arranged florals, polished silver and serviced pews at St. Francis In The Woods Church for decades.
Pam and Wally built their retirement home at Brunswick Beach, taking pleasure in bird-watching, gardening, neighbourhood beach parties, daily swims and treks to Lions Bay for mail. After Wally passed, Pam moved to Salmon Arm to be close to Carolyn.
Always elegant, hospitable, and generous, Pam, Mom, Gran and Great Gran will be deeply missed by three generations of descendants who variously slept on her rug, “borrowed” her car, regularly received cards, letters and presents, raided her kitchen, took her on adventures, teased and were teased.
A constant knitter, Pam was working on a blanket the last few days before she quietly passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2018. A great life with 99 years well lived.

Lawrance, Frank “Joseph” Leslie

February 9, 1920 – December 22, 2018
at the age of 98 years

“Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear no evil”

It is with broken and sorrowful hearts that we announce the passing of our dearest “Joe” on December 22, 2018 at Salmon Arm, BC.
Joe was born and raised on the prairies of Alberta.  He was the second child born in a sibline of four.  Raised on the farm he always had a love of the outdoors.  As a young lad he used to hunt gophers to earn his spending money and with this money he bought his first bike, which he was so proud of.  Into his nineties you could still see him out for a ride on his bike.  One of his main jobs on the farm was cutting and stacking wood for the family home.  As a young man Joe enlisted for service during WWII and went off to war.  As he once said, “I was just a young prairie boy who didn’t know what we were sailing into”.  Joe was part of the Royal Engineers who built bridges so troops could pass and to destroy them also so the enemy could not advance.  He always maintained that he “didn’t do anything special”.
Once he was discharged Joe spent five years in the Athabasca area of Alberta as a Fire Lookout.  After his father passed away Joe made his way to British Columbia to be closer to his mother.  British Columbia would become Joe’s home for the rest of his life.  He volunteered throughout his life and was an unassuming and kind man who would lend a helping hand whenever and wherever needed.  Joe was a very humble and gentle man who had an incredible faith.  He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, friend and a faithful servant to his Loving God.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Carrobel Lawrance as well as his three siblings; Phyllis, Penny and Arthur.  He was also predeceased by his dear friends Ken and Betty Rowley.  Joe is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and his very dear close friends, John and Diane Majerech.  We would also like to thank all of the staff at Bastion Place and all of the medical staff for the care and respect shown to Uncle Joe.
We know that Uncle Joe has made his way home to his Lord and Saviour where he has secured his eternal resting place.  He will be missed tremendously by those who loved him.  At his request there will be no service.  Joe will be placed to rest at a later date with much love and respect in honour of the incredible man he was.

Bellows, Donald Wesley Edward

December 2, 1931 – December 14, 2018
at the age of 87 years

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my amazing Grandfather, my 2nd father figure, Donald Wesley Edward Bellows. He passed peacefully at the age of 87 years old, in Shuswap Lake General Hospital, in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. Don was born in Central Butte, Saskatchewan.
He lived in Sicamous and Armstrong for quite a few years before residing in  Canoe, British Columbia where he has lived for the last 13 years.e is predeceased by his parents: Lucille and Benjamin Bellows, his 10 siblings, and his daughter, Diane Martin. He is survived by: Sons: Dean (Georgina) Bellows of Revelstoke BC, Paul (Val) Bellows of Vavenby, BC, Brother: George {Edna} Bellows of Penoka, Alberta. Don is survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Don worked at the  mill for quite a few years until retirement. One of his  famous quotes.” It’s best to be 10 mins early, then 10 mins late. He would always arrive 10 mins early when he was working at the mill.   As well as, “You can’t do things tomorrow, because tomorrow never comes because tomorrow is today.
My grandfather was a really smart man, and very wise.  He had such positive energy that anyone would want to be around him. He would say hi to people he didn’t even know. He taught me and I’m sure others how to be strong. To not let things bother you that you have no control over, and can’t do anything about. Don would teach you how to keep fighting because he sure gave one heck of a fight!!  He was a very stubborn man, but in a good way. He never complained, he was a pretty easy going man.
A funny memory when he was in the hospital was when the nurses would come and check his vitals and change him when they were done he would wave at them bye bye.
My Grandfather’s morning routine was waking up at 6 am in the morning to have his breakfast. Then he would head to town and go to A&W for coffee. After he would go to 711 and play keno. This was something he would do almost each and every day. He quite enjoyed hockey, which is where I got the love for live hockey and volunteer for a BCHL team the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.  The Canucks were one of his favorite teams, same with the Calgary Flames, and Detroit. He also loved watching baseball and other sports as well.
I among his family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Shuswap Lake Hospital for taking care of Don. We would like to thank Dr. Wilms who was his doctor for several years. We would also like to thank Vincent and Tammy Fisher of Fisher’s Funeral Services, for being so kind and sympathetic during our difficult time.
Donations can be made to the Diabetes Association. There is no memorial service upon Don’s  Request.

Escott, Capt. Kenneth Gordon

May 24, 1936 – December 12, 2018
at the age of 82 years

After a long and difficult illness, Ken left us peacefully on December 12, 2018 in Salmon Arm, B.C.  He leaves to mourn his brother Harry (Oresia) of Montreal, sister Kathleen Prince (Hayward) of Winnipeg, son Christopher (Lindsey) of Edmonton, daughter Laurie of Edmonton, grandsons Kyle and Owen, and granddaughter Justine. He is also survived by his sister-in-law France Brown and her husband Doug and sister in law Alice Hastings plus numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Iris, his first wife Joan and his second wife Marie-Paule.
Ken was born in Winnipeg to Fred and Agnes (Chambers) Escott. From his earliest years, he always knew what he wanted to do for a living – he wanted to fly.
He realized his dream. His first jobs were bush flying, where he had some hair-raising adventures. In time, as one of Canada’s earliest water bomber pilots, he progressed to water bombing, flying Canso’s. His career then took him to Midwest Airlines, Transair, and Canadian Airlines, from which he retired as Captain of Boeing 737s. He was proud of being a “by the book” pilot.
Ken was a kind, modest man. He didn’t often talk about his adventures, but when we could get him going he’d often laugh till the tears ran down his face. We urged him to write his memoirs, to no avail.
Ken loved being surrounded by family, so much so that, when he’d visit out-of-town relatives, rather than stay in a hotel, he preferred to cram his 6’4″ frame onto someone’s too-short sofa. His love of family was further evidenced by the generosity he showed in playing tour guide to multiple family members, young and old, in his favourite place, Hawaii. It was his happy place.
France and Doug, you are both so special. Whatever would we have done without you? Those innumerable trips, first to Kelowna, then to Salmon Arm in rain, shine, or snow; all those doctor visits; taking care of business affairs, plus a million so-called “little things” that made such a difference to Ken, and to us – you’ll never know how much they meant.
No service, by request. In lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson Canada would be appreciated.

Easton, Thomas Arthur

June 04, 1928 – November 22, 2018
at the age of 90 years

Open House, Saturday, April 6, 2019, 2:00 p.m., Fischer’s Funeral Services, Salmon Arm

Tom was born on June 4th, 1928 in Port Alberni, BC. Tom was the oldest of several siblings. Marion was born in 1929, Ted was born in 1930, Rosalie was born in 1931, Connie 1932, Everett 1933 and Sylvia 1939.
Life for the Easton family was hard with seven children, food was sometimes scarce which led Tom to begin working in logging at age 14. When his mother moved to Vancouver, Tom lived on his own in a little cabin on Vancouver Island. At some point, Tom settled in Vancouver and took up work as a lumber delivery driver and hog fuel delivery driver.
Around 1953, when Tom was 25 years old, he met and fell in love with Marg Hartwick. From that marriage, 3 children were born. Darlene was first born in 1954, Gary was born in 1956 and Denise was born in 1960. Tom was a busy father at the time and was working as a driver for Snowboy Company. Sadly in 1963 Tom and Marg divorced.
Following the divorce, Tom went on to work various construction jobs and highlights included getting to work on the Revelstoke, High Arrows and Mika dam projects being constructed in south eastern BC. An accomplishment during this time was when Tome purchased his own gravel truck and D8 Cat.
These projects allowed Tom a place to live and work until he met his future wife, a skinny nurse named Marie Statham in 1972. Tom was introduced to his wife by his sister Rosalie and in 1974 Tom and Marie were married. She brought her son Kevin into the marriage and Tom remembers sharing many birthday cakes with Kevin as Tom and Kevin’s birthdays were only one day apart. Tom, Marie and Kevin moved to Fernie, BC in 1976 where Tom started his career as a coal miner and began working at Keiser mine. He was able to operate the world’s largest haul truck which at the time was a Terex 350. Tom’s next job was BC Coal and then he finished his career in the coal industry at the West Star mine in 1991 when the company declared bankruptcy.
In 1980, while Tom and Marie were enjoying their recreation time, they bought their first motor home which became part of a series of motor homes. In 1982, they purchased their first motor boat and were able to learn how to ski and boogie board. In 1991 upon Tom’s retirement, they decided to move to a half-acre lot near Enderby, BC where Tom and Marie took up gardening. Tom decided to build large gardens for the two but Marie was stuck doing all the weeding, picking, canning and freezing. Tom and Marie’s gardens also included, fruit and nut trees as well as flower beds. On top of all the gardening, the two were still able to enjoy their time on the boat and had many happy hours on Okanagan and Kalamalka Lakes.
Sadly, as Tom aged his health started to deteriorate and the garden beds became smaller, luckily the smaller garden bed allowed Tom the time to rekindle his relationship with his half-brother and half-sister. In 2016 the decision was made that they had to move into Salmon Arm. Sadly, Tom realized his new home wouldn’t offer the room required to store all his stuff and he knew he had to downsize and part with almost all his tools. In 2017, Tom and Marie made the move from Enderby into Salmon Arm.
Tom’s health continued to decline after moving and he suffered from multiple falls as well as nose bleeds. On November 22, 2018, Tom passed away peacefully at the age of 90.

God Saw You
God saw you getting tired,
When a cure was not to be.
So he wrapped his arms around you,
And whispered, “Come with me”.
You didn’t deserve what you went through,
So he gave you rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful,
He only takes the best.
And when I saw you sleeping,
So peaceful and free of pain
I could not wish you back
To suffer that again.

Lord, Wilma Watson

March 12, 1925 – November 20, 2018
at the age of 93 years

Wilma Lord, affectionately known as “Woodies” age 93 years passed away peacefully on November 20, 2018 in the loving care of Piccadilly Care Centre, Salmon Arm B.C.
She was born in Stratford, County of West Ham, England in 1925 to William Watson and Janet (Murdoch) Watson and was the youngest of 5 children.
Wilma met a young Canadian Flt. Lieutenant F/O with the RCAF during WWII, Bruce Sheridan Lord, stationed near her home in Sandbanks England. They became engaged soon after they met and were married in St. David’s Cathedral, Wales in 1944. Bruce and Wilma honeymooned in London during The Blitz and bombing raids and were then stationed as far away as the Outer Hebrides while Bruce carried out flight missions in a Halifax bomber over France.
Bruce predeceased Wilma in Salmon Arm in 2013.
As the war drew to a close and Bruce returned to Canada, Wilma joined thousands of “war brides” on the long rough Transatlantic journey aboard the Aquitania to Halifax, N.S.,  where they boarded trains for the cross country trip to her new home in, at that time,  the “provincial” town of Vancouver, British Columbia. She and Bruce lived in Vancouver for most of her adult life then moved to Salmon Arm in 2012 to be closer to her son and daughter in law.
Wilma is survived by her children Janet and Garth Lord and their spouses John Calver and Debbie Lord,
Grandchildren Ian, Blake and Brett Lord and spouses Valerie, Stephanie and Jenna, great grandchildren Mila and William Asselstine, Harper and Casper Asselstine and Jax and Dekker Lord.
We wish to acknowledge and truly thank all the staff at Piccadilly Care Centre in Salmon Arm for their dedication and loving care of our Mum over these past few years and Fischer’s Funeral Services of Salmon Arm for their compassion and care.
“What greater thing is there for human souls than to feel that they are joined for life-to be with each other in silent unspeakable memories.” George Eliot

Campbell, Elizabeth

April 26, 1926 – November 14, 2018
at the age of 92 years

Sadly, our dear Mom & Grandmother passed away suddenly at Shuswap Lake General Hospital on November 14, 2018 at the age of 92. “Betty” was born in a little house on Wilson Avenue in Kelowna, BC.  She was the first child born to her Scottish immigrant parents, Patrick Williamson Runcie and Maria Findlay Runcie. She spent her youth enjoying all life had to offer, swimming, hiking and biking with her many friends throughout the Okanagan valley.
Mom’s first real job was as a lifeguard at the old Kelowna Aquatic Centre that was located at City Park. She later worked at Safeway to help put herself through nursing school. In 1948 she graduated as a Registered Nurse from Royal Inland Hospital Nursing School. Over the years she worked as an R.N. in Kamloops, Kelowna, Penticton and Salmon Arm hospitals.
Mom played many sports as a young girl and was an avid sports fan. She was introduced to her future husband (Bruce Campbell) at a hockey game in Kelowna in 1951 and they married on August 15, 1953.  Mom began her married life with Dad in Penticton, but they moved to Salmon Arm in 1956 where they bought their first home on Lakeshore Road with 16 acres overlooking the beautiful Shuswap Lake.  They spent 18 years there raising their 3 children (as well as several dogs, cats and horses.)  In 1973 they briefly moved back to Penticton for Dad’s work but in 1976 they moved to a small acreage in Blind Bay and spent nearly 35 happy years there. Mom enjoyed bowling, badminton, golfing, curling, swimming, playing bridge and gardening. In 2010 there was a move back to Salmon Arm due to Dad’s failing health.
Mom was sadly predeceased by her younger sister Jean in 1955, her husband Bruce Campbell in 2014 and her only son Daniel Campbell in 2013.
Mom is survived by her daughters, Jeanna Wensrich (Brent) of Twin Lakes, BC and Marianne Campbell of Salmon Arm, BC, four grandchildren, Rebecca Campbell Karpiak (Scott) of Kamloops, BC, Jacquelin Graffunder (Ryan) of Calgary AB, Daniel Anhorn of Calgary, AB and Tiffany Recker (Dominik) of Aucher, Germany, son in law John Anhorn of Kamloops, BC and her three great-grandchildren, Rosey Karpiak, Portia Karpiak and Eli Graffunder who brought such joy to her life whenever she saw them.
Our family wishes to extend our gratitude to Dr. Joan Bratty and Dr. Ross MacDonald for their care and kindness to Mom over the many years she was their patient.  Thank you also to the staff in emergency, Dr. Hepburn and the nurses who cared for mom when she arrived at the hospital.
We cannot thank the staff and so many of the residents at Piccadilly Terrace enough for everything they did for Mom. She appreciated each and every one of you for the care and kindness you extended to her these last few years while she was a resident.
Our thanks also to Tammy and Vince at Fischer’s Funeral Services for all of their help and kindness.
At Mom’s request there will be no formal service, although a celebration of her life, for close friends and family will be held in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, if anyone wishes to do something in Mom’s memory, a donation to the S.P.C.A or any Animal Rescue group or a donation to the Salvation Army would make her happy.

Rabie, Arthur “Art” Lawrence

June 1, 1933 – November 7, 2018
at the age of 85 years

Friends are invited to Art’s memorial tea  to be held on Saturday, November 17 at 2 P.M. in the lower level of the Crossroads F.M.Church on Shuswap  St. (Parking on the lower level).

Art was the oldest of six children born to Louise and George Rabie.  They lived on a 160 acre farm at Balmoral, B.C.  Art attended Balmoral’s one room school until grade eight, then continued briefly in Salmon Arm.  As a young man, he worked for the CPR, then in the logging industry as a tree faller, truck driver and mill worker at Adams Lake Lumber.  At the age of 29, he married Anne Mackenzie and together they had three children. Unfortunately, their children were passengers in a horrific car accident near Williams Lake. Donna was killed outright; Susie had to be given full care at home until she passed at age 25; and their son, Bill, broke both of his legs.  This accident had a huge impact on the family, but life went on. Art still enjoyed working in the bush, picking mushrooms, cones, boxwood, and wild berries which he sold in Vancouver. He also, at one point, had his own greenhouse business and proved that he had a “green thumb” just like his parents.  Art always had a large circle of friends and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, playing cards, bowling, listening to music and dancing.  After his wife died, he was happy to find a new partner.
Art and Gladys Bingham had many happy years together before they both began to have health challenges.  Art went into care and passed away four years later at Hillside Village with Gladys, his son Bill, and friends by his side.  Art was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Anne, his two daughters, Susie and Donna; his brother, John, and sister Anna Rabie.  Left to mourn his passing are his loving companion, Gladys; his son, Bill, (Jennifer); sisters Clara Anderson and Kay Mellish (Earl); and brother, Allan. Family members would like to thank the staff at Arbor Lodge, Pioneer Lodge, and Hillside Village for their excellent care

Henschell, Donald Elmer

July 11, 1942 – October 20, 2018
at the age of 76 years

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 721 2nd Street SE, Salmon Arm with Mr. Garfield Chursky leading in the remembrance of Don.  A tea and visiting will follow, all are welcome.

It is with much sadness that I say good bye to my dear Don, who passed away October 20 in Shuswap Lake General Hospital, a week after having a major stroke at home. Although he was comfortable that last week, it was painful for family and friends as we loved and comforted him 24 hours a day until he took his last breath with myself and Tracy holding him close.
Don was born in Edmonton on July 11, 1942.  In 1952, as a young boy, along with his four brothers and two sisters, his family settled in Salmon Arm.  He helped farm with his family on the same property where he lived and passed.  Farming wasn’t Don’s passion, so he started his kitchen cabinet business on our property in 1980.   He loved the smell of wood more than cows and didn’t have to get up so early to say good morning.
When we were married March 18, 1977, he inherited my three children, Shawn, Tracy and Blaine and their offspring at the same time.  He loved them and they loved him.
We travelled many times to Hawaii, starting with our honeymoon, then Mexico, as well as other countries including Fiji where we went twice as it was his favorite.
Life is more enjoyable than death, but Don, one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, had the Bible hope promised by the Lord’s Prayer   “Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done on Earth”.  He will see the reality of Psalms 37:29 “The Righteous Will Possess the Earth, and they Will Live Forever on it”.

Wallace, Mildred Gwendoline “Gwen”

May 28, 1937 – October 10, 2018
at the age of 81 years

Celebration of Life:  11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 20, 2018, Fischer’s Funeral Services, reception to follow at Carlin Hall.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Gwen Wallace on October 10, 2018 at Shuswap Lake Hospital.
Born in Star City, Saskatchewan on May 28, 1937 to Karl and Hilda McIntyre, Gwen was the third of four children. She grew up on their family farm, living, breathing and loving their small town prairie life.  After her childhood in Star City, she moved a few times before landing in Kamloops, B.C. There she met and married Harold Garrett, and together they had six children. Gwen moved around throughout B.C. a few more times before finding a permanent community in Salmon Arm in 1968. In 1974 she got remarried to her soulmate Larry Wallace, after knowing him for eight years, and they moved to White Lake where they began building their beautiful life together.
Gwen worked as a teacher’s aide at Carlin School in the ‘70s and became well known as a safe haven for the students. Many showed up at her house, after school hours, either looking for a place to stay, for a meal, for advice, or just for a laugh and a visit. Even after her time at Carlin, she consistently opened her heart and her home to anyone in need. Her unwavering kindness and her willingness to help made her a truly rare and magical lady.
Her passions were creative and often involved getting her hands dirty: she was a fantastic baker, a skilled painter, and was forever digging around in her gardens. You could always find her barefoot in the flower beds, weeding, planting, or chasing away crows and squirrels. She loved to sit with a tea on her deck, listen to the songbirds, and enjoy the view of her yard. If she wasn’t outside, she was playing her piano, baking up something delicious, making jam, working away on a painting, or off on one of her beloved car-rides with Larry. She also thoroughly enjoyed attending and being a part of the Spiritualist Church of Salmon Arm – she made many wonderful friends there.
She was strong, incredibly tenacious, and feisty with an exquisite sense of humour and a warm, contagious smile. She was chock-full of stories, and loved to make a little mischief when she could – especially if it would make someone laugh or feel better. She was and will always be an influential, inspirational woman to all of her family and friends. There was truly no one like her.
Gwen was predeceased by her first husband Harold, her parents and her sisters. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 44 years, Larry; her children Wanda (Bernard), Kelly (Brian), Shane, Tammy, Margot, and Kim; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Fischer’s Funeral Home, reception to follow at Carlin Hall.
A huge and heartfelt thank you goes out to Dr. Weicker and Dr. McKinnon, as well as the staff and nurses at Shuswap Lake Hospital – thank you all for caring deeply for her, and for being so kind and compassionate.

Pat and Phil had 35 happy years together and enjoyed their retirement in the Shuswap area.  He loved crosswords, his cats, anything sci-fi and he was always up for a good conversation and debate.  He was a proud Canadian/Scotsman with a great sense of humor. In 2007 he was convinced to moving to the Shuswap would be a great idea and he settled happily in Blind Bay. With the shop of his dreams he was able to continue his woodworking to his heart’s content and in the summer he loved spending time on the water.
An avid supporter of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers he continued to hope they would win another Grey Cup.

Thanks go to Dr. Bonthuys, Dr. Main and Dr. Carnegy for their kindness and compassion. Also a thank you to the nurses Carmen, Jordan, Spencer and Mike for making Glen’s last days peaceful. A special thanks to Sally and Ron Dent, Patricia Kuhn and Ian McLafferty for their constant support during this difficult time.

As per Glen’s request there will not be a funeral. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Shuswap Hospice Society would be greatly appreciated.
