Schlitt, Paul Samuel

Schlitt, Paul Samuel

October 18, 1922 – September 24, 2021
at the age of 98 years

Celebration of Life:  Friday, October 1, 2021, 1:00 p.m.    Gardom Lake Bible Camp, 651 Glenmary Road, Enderby, BC

On the afternoon of September 24th, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. our Dad, Paul Samuel Schlitt, slipped quietly into the presence of his “Wonderful LORD and Heavenly Father”, that is how his prayers always started for as long as we can remember.  He was a powerful pray-er and he lived his whole life, almost 99 years, in service to his Heavenly Father.

Dad loved his family and from our earliest days he read the scriptures to us, prayed with us and for us, and took us to church and Sunday School, even on holidays we would find a church to attend.  There were many family holidays outings and camping trips that combined his love of hunting with family fun.

Beyond our family, he served his Heavenly Father by including strangers and newcomers around our table, as well as inviting young bible school students and missionaries to be our guests and eventually life-long friends.

He was a truck driver, driving to all parts of BC and beyond, even there, serving his Heavenly Father was a top priority while he handed out his little bibles wherever he went.

His passion was to help send, support and pray for missionaries around the world.  In later years he became particularly passionate about missions in Cuba, the Ukraine, the Philippines and their urban poor.  He always gave generously.  We often said “He would even give the shirt off his back if he thought someone needed it.”

And now he is in heaven hearing the Lord’s “Well done, good and faithful servant.” All the way, his Savior led him and he is home.  He has said his last Gott Befohlen and we couldn’t be happier for him.  We know he is waiting there for his wife Connie who walked the journey faithfully with him for 70 years.  He is also waiting for their six children with husbands and wives, their 24 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.  We will meet again!!

A service will be held at a later date.

Dieter was born in Leipzig, Germany and was raised in an orphanage until his father and stepmother adopted him when he was 3 years old. He grew up in Dinglesdorf on the Bodensee, but the romance of cowboy novels and the dire conditions of post war Germany lead him on a journey to Canada. He eventually ended up in Edmonton and worked as a ranch hand.

Dad repeatedly told us that his chance meeting with Mom at the corner of Jasper Avenue and 97th Avenue was a miracle. A minute earlier or later, he would have missed the love of his life. They shared a memorable 66 years together.

His lust for adventure and the need for steady employment led his young family to Kitimat, BC. The amazing fishing, an outdoor experiences far outweighed the work conditions, incessant rain and isolation.

After several years Dieter packed up his family and headed east to Prince George. A carpenter by trade, he soon found employment at Northwood Pulp Mill. They spent 30 years in Prince George where Dieter was an active member of the Canadian Ski Patrol at Purden Provincial Mountain and a dedicated member of the Provincial Search and Rescue team.

It is here that he instilled in his family a lifelong passion of skiing and the great outdoors.

In the early 1990’s Dieter and Alexandra relocated to Salmon Arm, BC and loved every moment of their retirement. The area reminded Dieter of the Bodensee, and he loved picking cherries, apples and walnuts. They loved to fish and their Kokanee fry ups were legendary.

In his thirst for adventure, Dieter and Alexandra also spent winters in Mazatlan, Mexico for years, as well as visiting China, India, Europe, Bali, Cuba, cruising the Panama Canal, and exploring Canada and the US.

Missing him forever are his wife Alexandra, children Angela Lesniewicz (George), Andre Wimmer (Janice), Ralph (Polly) and Opa to Demitri (Andrea), Dominica, Tatiana (Steven), Dakota and Hamish as well as the great grandchildren – twins Atley and MIro, who Dad never could tell apart!

at the age of 90 years

In Loving Memory ~ (1931-2021) It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our loving Grandma on August 22, 2021. She was predeceased by her loving husband Gordon and her two children, Garry and Linda, and son-in-law, Les.

Grandma and Grandpa spent most of their years together in the Shuswap area of beautiful British Columbia. Golfing, fishing, boating, playing cards and crib with many, many friends they grew to love and had enduring relationships with throughout those years.

They also had many loving and cherished friends in Edmonton; she was affectionately known to many as Sis. Grandma was a remarkably strong woman. She balanced the greatest of heartaches and loss by staying active; working bingos, playing crib, and being a member of the sewing club.

Rest in Peace Grandma. We know Grandpa will be there to guide you to your eternal home and reunite you with our parents.

Love always, Collin, Graham, Dana and great grandson, Paul.

Interment has taken place.

Schneider, Kent Martin Thomas

January 2, 1965 – August 19, 2021
at the age of 56 years

Kent Martin Thomas Schneider was born in Calgary AB to Kenneth & Sharon Schneider.
Kent left behind two wonderful children, Breanne Westerhausen Schneider & Daniel Grimes. He is also survived by his mother, Sharon Schneider and his younger siblings, Mark (wife Linda) Schneider and Tami (husband Neal) Calkins and his many nieces and nephews.
He also leaves behind his Girlfriend Anika Moore and her two children, Bentley and Daisia.
Kent dedicated his life to family, especially his beloved daughter Bre who we all know that he will always be watching over. After his father’s passing, Kent moved home to Salmon Arm to look after his mother Sharon.
Kent took such pride in raising his incredible daughter Bre, they were the best of friends and shared a very special yet unique bond. Kent’s son came to him later in life, and though distanced he did the best he could to create memories with Daniel that will last.
Kent loved children more than anything, him being a big kid himself.
Prior to his passing, Kent hoped to spend all summer camping with his family and friends. Kent took it upon himself to make his last wish known… gathering the whole family together for a reunion. Although unable to attend himself, he made sure that his last gift would provide memories and laughter to last us a lifetime.
Kent’s contagious smile and down to earth soul impacted everyone he met in one way or another by drawing them in and filling them up with love. We will miss seeing his beautiful smile and he will be missed more than what words can express.
Rest in Peace Kent Schneider.

Stier, Julie Anne

Stier, Julie Anne

March 5, 1955 – August 12, 2021
at the age of 66 years:

Julie passed peacefully at home on August 12, 2021 in Salmon Arm, B.C., with husband Stephen, daughter Leigha, and sister Leanne by her side.

Julie was born in 1955 in Revelstoke, BC, the second of four children born to Norbert and Phyllis Stier. Early life in the country set the stage for a lifelong love of nature. Her keen sense of adventure fuelled a love of travel: all who knew her knew of her beloved roadtripping truck, Harmonique, and her backpacking trip across Europe—including a brief and eventful stay in Yugoslavia!

Once back in Canada, Julie lived all across the country—in Ottawa, Calgary, Victoria, and Surrey. She finished a double major in English and History at the University of Victoria and obtained a teaching certificate from Simon Fraser University. After meeting Stephen Smith in Calgary in 1976, the pair married in 1986 and moved from Ottawa to rural Quebec, where they built a house overlooking a peaceful lake—just steps from their front door.

After daughter Leigha was born in 1989, the family relocated in 1993 to Victoria, but the pull of country living proved too strong to resist. Julie and Stephen retired to Salmon Arm in 2000, where the rolling hills and calling birds put Julie at ease.

With sharp wit and warm humour, Julie made adventure wherever she went. She wore a lot of hats in her career—from post office worker to teacher to running her own daycare. She juggled just as much in retirement: between birding, gardening, and environmental activism, Julie made frequent friends with the local animals. She once helped a feral cat with her newborn kitten… and got adopted by that cat in thanks!

A friend to children, animals, family, and neighbours, all who knew Julie were touched by her thoughtfulness and care. Julie is survived by her husband of 35 years, Stephen, and daughter Leigha (Kyle) of Montreal.

At Julie’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Smith, Irene Vivian

Smith, Irene Vivian

May 8, 1933 – July 25, 2021
at the age of 88 years

Mom was born on May 8, 1933 in Waskateneau, Alberta, a sister for her older brother Cecil. After the tragic loss of their mother Ella, Mom and her siblings which now included baby sister Lynne went to live with various family members on both sides but it was with Auntie Viv and Uncle Wally Trenholm she remembered most fondly. Blue eyes, blond hair and a fiery temperament described mom to a tee as anyone foolish enough to tease her soon found the error of their ways. As a young teenager Mom moved to Edmonton and worked in a bakery but eventually found herself back in rural Alberta where she met the love of her life, Jim Smith, a handsome guitar picker and jack of all trades. At ages 17 and 18 they married in 1950 and began raising a large family. Ken, Doug, Carol, Wally, Sandy, Kathy, and finally Robert and Allen after moving west to Salmon Arm from North Bay, Ontario.

Perhaps it was because Mom was deprived of her own mother at a young age that doing whatever was needed, and raising kids was what she loved most which also included taking care of other people’s kids too. Her beautiful blond hair started to turn grey very early perhaps because of nature but most likely it was raising all those rambunctious boys that were always in need of first aid. Capable of practically anything she put her mind to this also included sewing the leg back on an injured piglet while brother Allen held the squirming critter. She never lost her fiery temperament but she also had a kind heart that defended the helpless whether man or beast:  starving rescued pigs, footless roosters, foundered donkeys and a louse ridden grouse knew the depths of her compassion for helpless creatures. Mom’s artistic abilities were naturally numerous and besides helping others she loved growing a garden, her fishpond and Murdoch mysteries.

Most of all Mom loved our Dad intensely and in fact celebrated seventy years of marriage before Dad’s passing last October. With brother Rob at her side, Mom slipped away peacefully to rejoin the person that she was always meant to be with.  You were a good Mom under some tough times and stood up for kids and animals alike and now it’s time to rest but if it’s possible I just bet you’re somewhere feeding a donkey or two or making dad pancakes.

Goodbye Mom, hard days are past and good memories last longest.

Hunter, Charlotte Grace

Hunter, Charlotte Grace

December 6, 1957 – July 23, 2021
at the age of 63 years

A Celebration of Charlotte’s Life will be held at the family home 1105 Grayston Rd in the Deep Creek Valley, Saturday August 14 at 11 am. Please bring your best Charlotte story to share. Lunch and drink will be served.

Charlotte was born in Marville, France to Agnes and Norm Cleaver during her dad’s first overseas Canadian Armed Force posting in Belgium. The family moved several times thru out Eastern Canada and Ontario as her father’s posting changed. The family finally settled in Trinity Valley after her dad retired from the Armed Forces in the late 1970’s. And from a chance introduction from mutual friends, she met her future husband Lorne which led to a life on the family dairy farm in Deep Creek Valley.

Charlotte is the mother of three very accomplished adult children. Kevin, Danielle, and Christine. Her world revolved around the raising of the children, 4-H, Girl Guides, soccer, and school functions. Charlotte volunteered as a leader for Brownies, Guides, and Rangers. As the girls got older her involvement with the Guiding continued into the regional and district levels managing the finances of the annual cookie sales and getting local girls to International Rendezvous Camps.  Her behind the scene efforts were recognized several times, with dinners in her name and provincial awards. She has continued her involvement with the Guiding world by being a member of the local Trefoil Guilds and their monthly lunches.

Charlotte’s quiet time was spent making clothes for the kids, designing and creating quilts for any bed that didn’t already have one or as a very coveted award to others for their achievements – mainly in Guiding and the annual Christmas tree ornaments gifts which still adorn all her family’s and friend’s trees.  She knitted and crocheted toques, mitts, scarves, and lap blankets by the box full for retirement homes, Santa’s Anonymous and Grannies to Grannies and she did needle point projects for herself simply because the family continued to buy them for her birthday or as a safe Christmas gift. Her fingers were always busy creating, with most of her projects being given away. Creating was reward enough.

A Celebration of Charlotte’s Life will be held at the family home 1105 Grayston Rd in the Deep Creek Valley, Saturday August 14 at 11 am. Please bring your best Charlotte story to share. Lunch and drink will be served.

Thank you dear for the love and memories it has been a pleasure to have shared your life. Lorne

The funeral/celebration of Wayne’s life will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 11am at Fischer’s Funeral Services.  Due to Co-Vid restrictions there will be no reception.

It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Wayne at the age of 80 years.  He leaves behind his wife Judi, son Blaine (Irene), Deanna, chosen daughter Robin (Bob), grandsons Bowen and Kamryn, sisters Edith, Susan (Mike), together with brothers and sisters in laws as well as 21 nieces and nephews.  All will miss him dearly.

Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Wayne grew up as a busy young man; at the age of 16, he sought the trade of “baker” and worked at his father’s bakery, working nights, weekends and after school.  At the young age of 19, three months apart, Wayne lost both his parents of natural causes.  Two years later, Wayne met his wife Judi and for 59 years, they enjoyed their life together with Blaine, Deanna and each other.

Wayne’s work history is an interesting one.  At age 22 he secured employment with NORAD, employed as a baker and cook on the DEW Line.  After being away from his family for 7 years, the family made the decision to relocate to Salmon Arm, where once again, another change was made and Wayne joined the lumber industry and became employed by Federated Co-op in the Canoe Division.  This was to be his last employment, one which lasted 30 years until his retirement in 2003.  Wayne loved the Shuswap Lake, and enjoyed operating the tug, hauling logs up and down the lake, as well as in the mill grounds.

Never too busy to offer a hand, Wayne helped and volunteered at Cadets, the Seniors Group, as well as with the Friends at Christmas.  He offered his expertise as trustee of his union and enjoyed his time as president of the retiree’ S.O.A.R. group.  Wayne was never one to sit still, when not at work or following through on a volunteer commitment, he built cedar chests, gun cabinets and completed many renovations outside of his home which supplemented the family income.  He designed and built a 40 foot cruiser, a project which took three years in the making but one which afforded Judi and Wane many years of boating and fishing fun on the Shuswap Lake.  Fishing and hunting were Wayne’s passions; Wayne also loved to travel and many experiences were shared with Judi and friends on trips to Mexico, the Yukon, NWT, and across Canada.

Wayne had a dream!  Having been adopted as a young child, he always had a keen interest in meeting his biological family, the McGunigal’s and in 2002 with the support of his family, the miracle happened.  He met several aunts, uncles and as many as 125 cousins; now the family had grown and as a result, may trips and ventures were enjoyed as he and Judi reconnected to their newfound family.

The family wish to extend sincere gratitude to Dr. Levins, the 4th floor staff at SLGH for their kind and tender care of Wayne; a special thank you to the group at Fischer’s Funeral Services for their support and guidance!

A life well lived; thank you all for being part of Wayne’s journey!
